Pretty much this.

That said, Woverine will not only have to deal with people's perception because of Origin, but also the fact that alot of fans will hate the movie regardless because it was made by FOX.

Which is stupid , of course, but hey...par the course when dealing with fanboys.

LOL this is true!

A lot of people are expecting this movie to be terrible just because its made by Fox!

I hate Rotten Tomatoes. :cmad:

I love Rotten Tomatoes!

I'm surprised this is a PG-13 movie. Not sure how they managed that. Violent, language, sex. It's every adult oriented in he best way possible.

The MPAA did say that when they gave the film a Pg-13 rate.

sequences of intense sci-fi action and violence, some sexuality and language.

Not every comic book movie needs to be over 2 hours. People talk about super hero fatigue, and I think sitting in a theater for 2 and half hours 4 times a summer contributes largely to that.

100% agree

You don't need to submit your reviews to the studios. After a screening you send them your initial thoughts and if they want to they'll ask for a pull quote from the review. Sometimes they'll ask for the full review. You're not obligated to give one if you don't want to. Most times you may have a mildly positive reaction to a movie (like for me an Pacific Rim) but when they asked for a quote I declined.

Okay. Thanks for the info.

Movies should be as long as they need to be. There's no need for a standard.

The problem is so many movies are now being forced by the studios into 2 hour runtime slotting even when they don't need it for their stories. That's becoming more and more prevalent. Unfortunately this is only the beginning. We'll be dealing with 3 hour movies as a standard in the next 10 years

Toy Story is one of my favourite movies and it's not even 90 mins. It has some of the tighest storytelling I've seen in an animated film.

X-Men 3 doesn't feel like a 1hr 40min film, it feels a lot longer.

Its probably the pacing of the film. It was very fast and a lot of things were happening. If you watch X2 and X3 at the same time, you will notice how short X3 is. When the X-Men/Brotherhood just got into Stryker's base in X2, Wolverine already killed Jean in X3.

While I do think CBMs should mostly be kinda long (not TDKR long, though), I agree with this. Fruitvale Station is only 85-90 minutes long, but it's apparently a very well-made and character-driven film. The issue with CBMs in particular is that many of them would have been longer had the studio not interfered, which is probably what fuels that "long = good" mentality.

Indie movies - Film only what's necessary. Add bits and pieces if only absolutely needed and can fit the budget.

Superhero movies - Film as much as possible and then chip away chucks that don't fit into designated slotting.

This is why they give superhero movie directors $225+ million budgets. Personally I think the first technique works better for storytelling.

How does this film look in terms of indie vs. blockbuster?

The problem with X3 was that nothing that was happening onscreen felt like it was all that important. The fast pace didn't help (the x-men barely acknowledge Scott's death and don't mourn him at all because Jean escapes and Xavier dies too quickly). In the first two films, there were moments where the characters had time to process what was happening and interact (Logan/Bobby ice cream scene for instance). Also, the stakes in X1/X2 felt bigger and more urgent than in X3. The Wolverine definitely isn't an indie film, but it looks somewhat more stylized than your average summer blockbuster.

Totally agree with you there, Loki, about X3. you can tell these scenes were rushed with no emotion or substance. :( *sighs* but...that won't be a bother any more once DOFP comes out next year :p

Ratner didn't let the film to breathe. Its similar to Man of Steel, where it always jumps to the next action sequence and scene. No wonder why they almost have the same rating in Rotten Tomatoes. LOL!

That was also a big issue with Origins. Jumped around so much that no part of the film felt 'complete.' It should have focused on a specific period in his life instead of trying to cover over 100 years in a fairly short film. They should have stripped it down to figure out what mattered most, digging into and exploring what was essential.

Except that MOS was twenty times better and I cared about the characters and what was happening. Also, I saw a tv spot for the movie were Mariko (who was wearing some kind of night gown/undergarments) is laying down and touching Logan's claws. Is this movie going to be rated-R after all (that scene could lead to something pretty racy). The tv spot said that it wasn't rated yet.

Ratner was clearly trying to emulate the feeling of the 90's animated cartoon. He was even quoted mention the cartoon a few times, even in the Blu Ray special features. There were a lot of 'fast' conversations, boom action, fast conversation, boom action. Even in the line delivery you can tell everyone was just sped up a notch or too, like the cartoon. Wow, i hate X3...

Thanks for letting me know. You can still make an intense and violent movie with a pg-13 rating (Nolan Bat-films, X1/X2). I just think that Wolverine works as an R-rated character, so it's disappointing not to see that.

If thats the case, then LOL! X3 is a movie not a TV cartoon. Its not bad to take some inspiration and elements from the 90's X-Men cartoon. But still, he should have know better to come up with a better movie. The 90s cartoon was fun and exciting but compare to X1/X2, it was very light.
