This is probably why it's taking so long for them to find the right Spider-Man. It's not just about the looks, charisma and acting chops, but they have to also have great chemistry with the cast and with the public. And the age of the actor they are looking for, an age where people are not even out of the gate trying to find themselves, it's going to be tough.

I think instead of shooting for a 16-17 year old, they should get a 20 year old instead who's a babyface and can pass him off for a teenager. A little older shouldn't be too much of a trouble imo.

For what they're looking for in a SM, it's going to dang near impossible to find an actor who fits every parameter, especially the one where they have to hold their own against the existing Avenger team members. That's why I think they'll eventually have to open up the actor pool to those in their early 20s also.

Yeah, they will probably have no choice but to expand the age to include early 20's. But right now, I really am getting this feeling that they are trying to find gold in Spider-Man like they did with Thor, in a relatively unknown that just defines the role.

At least Whedon couldn't poke fun, and give Cap another absolutely terrible suit in this one.

Did Joss make fun of Cap? I mean, Tony definitely did, but then it would honestly be out of character for MCU!Tony NOT to poke fun at a guy like Captain America.

I think people mistake "Tony being a jerk to a guy his father (who he has so many issues with) idolized" for "Joss disliking the character".

I dont think Joss hates Cap I think he was writing in character as Tony and it came out in the dialogue. It was like a battle of old vs new to me. Tony is so advanced, he saw Cap as an old stick in the mud. Of course hes gonna be snarky to him.

In AOU theyve become close but I guess that doesnt last as long as we hoped.

Uh, it's hard to say, because it wasn't just Tony, but pretty much everyone in the movie kept on giving Cap this sweeping arm pass like he was nothing, and I felt he had to work to get the respect he got in the end. Case in point, when Thor came down and got Loki out of the aircraft, Cap was suiting up to go after him and Natasha was like, better sit this one out Cap, these guys are basically Gods, I took that like she really didn't think much of him. Then the battle in the forest, with the whole Thor "you want me to put my HAMMER DOWN?" and he does go to put the Hammer down, only to end up being blown back by the reprecussions of Cap's shield. After that, he learned to respect Steve. So, all of this may be jabs and polks at Cap in the beginning, but I think Whedon knew what he was doing, and had to build up Cap slowly in this movie. It would be hard to digest for the regular folk to see him as the leader all of a sudden with the likes of Tony, Thor, Fury and even Widow to an extent. I found this to be a brilliant move by Whedon. The only major downfalls after three years of absorbing this movie, is that he gave Widow too much power in it.

With the way Tony was going on about Cap, it makes me wonder if maybe perhaps they were hinting that during his time growing up, perhaps Cap was the bar that his father expected Tony to achieve to, so he already had a built in resentment towards Steve, kind of like the big brother that mommy and daddy put on such a high pedestal.

We're forgetting a very important piece of the debate here:

Phil Coulson's worship/love of Captain America in Avengers 1. That pretty much overpowered the snark from Tony. Tonys thing was more like a super hero competition with Cap anyway. By the end he had proven his worth when he saved NYC.

considering Widow was the only female member of the team, Joss did the right thing. As for Cap he gained the respect of his fellow teamates when he lead them into battle in the battle of New York.

Stark feud with Rogers is Rogers got to have a relationship with his dad the way Tony never did. Not to mention Captain America's reputation speaks for itself he earns the respect and trust of others.

warhorse: I bet that Howard did rave to Tony about how great Cap was. He even says it "Thats the guy my dad couldnt shut up about?...". So there probably was some resentment since he and Howard werent very close. good point.

How come what Black widow did was ok just because she's a woman? I don't understand.

Hmmm, good question. I would have liked it more if it was Thor that closed the portal, not Widow.

I love Natasha, but Widow was of little use on the ground in Avengers. Handguns and martial arts vs Chitauri rayguns can only get you so far. It makes perfect sense she would leave the battlefield and be the one to close the portal. Thor was occupied, Tony was occupied, Steve was occupied, the Hulk was occupied. Each character needed a moment or two to shine.

Lawd.... Why are we discussing BW in the Cap thread? Especially her supposed "uselessness"? Why do people think she was freaking useless?

Steve would be shaking his head at all of you.

Also, A+ to pics of Chris' butt in that beige suit! That's a much better use of this topic.

MCU Tony is jealous. RDJ has said so. In Agent Carter we hear Howard call Steve the only good thing he created in this world, and then realizes he didn't make Steve good. Also that like Peggy, he loved Steve. Years after he goes down Howard continues to look for Steve in the ice and even after he's dead the expeditions continue.

In IM2 Tony sees the old film footage of Howard calling Tony "his greatest creation" and it's evident from Tony's reaction that wasn't a sentiment ever spoken to him personally by his father, that he was very stringent with praise for his son. Whereas Steve was the guy his father couldn't shut up about.

In 616 and even the animated shows it's obvious that Tony grew up a complete CA fanboy. His collection of Cap stuff puts Coulson's Trading Cards to shame. One wonders if there's a similar secret past luring in MCU's Tony's childhood. Adulation and jealousy can easily co-exist.

RDJ in during the China press interestingly said that his relationship with Cap is similar to the one he has with his wife. :woot: Now, that is very 616 and I wonder how that plays out in the movies.

100% agreed. In the movie, Cap earns the respect of everyone, and gets his moment to much like everyone got a chance to face Loki. Even Stark said "Call it Cap" which shows that now Stark is willing to follow him. You can't start the movie with Cap as the leader. It has to mature. Whedon does it brilliantly. Watching the film yesterday, it was even more evident to me. While Cap wasn't the "sexiest" character in the movie, he was in many ways its heart.

I dont see why a character has to be "sexy" in a movie like this. I could not agree more with the analysis how Cap evolves and shows his leadership skills. Also Cap is that inspires Tony to make what is potentially the ultimate sacrifice in the end. That reflects so well on Cap.

Ahh, that's all good to read. I see so many complaints about Cap in Avengers being a weak character, but I really enjoyed him in that film. Is Tony more flashy? Well, yeah, but Tony's job is to be flashy. I mean, compare Cap on stage in CA to Tony's little intro in IM2. But being a different character isn't a bad thing.

And yeah, Tony definitely has some daddy issues related to Steve. In IM2 his dad has even packed up and stored the Tesseract information right next to a Captain America comic. Like that in anyway has to be locked in a special super secret box. Thanks, dad.

Cap was just unfrozen from a block of ice after 70 yrs and he's like 90 yrs old. Yes, I think he did a good job standing up to the other much younger people under those awkward circumstances in A1. The suit wasnt his fault, blame Phil Coulson/SHIELD! They did everything wrong in that movie anyway. :)
