Superman should definitely come across as untrustworthy in the public's eye at first. Didn't Birthright show that as well? He spent some time in Africa before moving back to Metropolis, but even in Africa, he didn't don his suit. I remember one panel where he jumped in front of a friend to protect him from bullet fire, stopping everything with his bare hands, wearing nothing but a civilian attire and camera around his neck.
I agree about the overall length of the film. It should, in my opinion, clock in at somewhere around 150 minutes, like Superman Returns did. The major difference of course being that the first 30 minutes are reserved for Krypton/origin development, another 30 to 45 for Africa/Smallville scenes, which would leave a minimum of 75 minutes for character/relationship development in Metropolis, and all the necessary action scenes that accompany it. Although it of course goes without saying that the Krypton/Africa/Smallville scenes should have plenty of their own as well.
I would also like to point out that, in my opinion, there is no use in comparing Thor or Spiderman with Superman. Thor is a god, Spiderman is a whimsy teenager and Superman is an alien with nearly unlimited powers. Not to mention that the two former are from Marvel, and this is a DC thread...
Saying there are already too many Superman origin stories is a load of bull too. Superman The Movie touched upon the entire origin in less than 10 minutes, and not referenced again in the sequels. Superman Returns had some weak flashbacks to his teen years, and nothing else.
A reboot with a proper re-imagining, with a half hour running time, clearly defining his birth, earlier years, life on Krypton, and his parents, is the only way to go. Some flashbacks later on in the film, within the Fortress of Solitude, or simply having Superman remember certain moments, wouldn't hurt either. Crowe and Ormond are great actors. They'd pull it off for sure.
