The Suicide Squad: General Discussion and Speculation

People will continue to use the first one as a scapegoat but ignore the fact Godzilla vs Kong made almost 100m more than King of the Monsters which was hated and flopped and opened in far worse covid conditions

The first one made plenty of money...it had insane legs at the end. That excuse is dumb. While much of the movie was disliked Margot's HQ became ubiquitous at cons and in pop culture.

You make these weirdly bad analogies though trying to spin everything negative when it comes to WB sometimes. GvK and TSS are not comparable. First of all KOTM didn't "flop" it doubled a pretty high budget. (made $386 million on $170 million according boxofficemojo) It underperformed but hardly flopped and GvK was what everyone was looking forward to anyways and while the Pandemic was in swing still the vaccine in America was going strong so GvK sort of became the "we are back baby!" film that people flocked to. (even those that had little interest in seeing it) By your logic then BvS should be thought of better because it made much more than MOS did despite it underperforming.

TSS is a different animal altogether. First of all Delta is worse than Alpha and scaring the bejesus out of even the vaccinated. Second, unlike a Monster Movie like GvK you could watch TSS on a nice TV and probably not feel cheated as a general audience member. Third, every week now a big movie is coming out which is part of the reason EVERYTHING is underperforming. GvK had almost no real competition.

Look if people need to find ways to spin the money it makes that is on them. WB certainly isn't. If they cared they would have pushed back the HBO Max premiere. While some around here and on Twitter, especially the Cultists, will spin it badly the only people that matter right now are WB.

Gunn nailed Harley, in my mind. Margots done a fantastic job in all her appearances so far, and she was at her best here.
Awesome! I wasn’t all that happy with Harley in the original SS. She was fine rather than great like she should be. But then she was so good in BoP and I’m very happy to be hearing good things about her in this.

There are now four Suicide Squad movies. What do you guys think is the best one out of all the live-action and animated movies? Here’s a thread for you to vote!

Best Suicide Squad Movie

I think I prefer the animated Assault On Arkham over TSS simply on a tone basis since I prefer my SS movie to be more serious and grounded & less gag-oriented than Gunn’s film. Arkham had a superior plot, and I always prefer the Squad to tackle a more grounded threat than a alien starfish.

My ranking of Suicide Squad movies from best to worst would be…

1. Assault On Arkham(2014)
2. The Suicide Squad(2021)
3. Suicide Squad: Hell To Pay(2018)
4. Suicide Squad(2016)

Loved it. Gunn’s directing and the way he handles the characters and ensembles. Great cast, action, cinematography and humor that worked so well for me. Had a blast with this film.

I knew some of the deaths going in but not all so I was surprised a couple of times. Margot gave us her best version of Harley yet (and I think she’s been great as Harley in her previous films). Bloodsport was awesome, Ratcatcher II and Polka Dot Man were great. King Shark was so lovable haha. And damn I think Cena did an excellent job as Peacemaker.
Glad you liked it mate! That’s all hyping me up. Had no idea this was going to turn into such a winner.

Gonna watch it this afternoon, im hyped. Although im hearing a recurring complInt that act II is slow and rough.

That’s my exact ranking!

TBH there’s a good chance the Ayer cut could overtake that no 1 spot. I like the general plot and roster of the first movie better. But the current edit is ****ing atrocious garbage.

This isn’t my favorite James Gunn movie. Both Guardians movies were superior. This soundtrack didn’t work as well as those other movies IMO. This movie was fun but forgettable. Solid entertainment. I gave it 7.5/10. I’d like to see a James Gunn Titans movie (pg 13 please!). In my opinion, this movie shows he doesn’t need an R rating. I thought both GOTG movies were funnier. They both made me cry, so they had more of an emotional impact on me as well. That’s saying something, because I strongly prefer DC.

It’s slower compared to the opening and insanely engaging last act, but “rough” is pushing it imo. It’s just fine.

Loved it. Everything that the first awful movie wasn’t, this movie was. We actually got Harley Quinn for the first time in a movie. Amazing.

I adore Gunn’s willingness to embrace the crazy at the heart of so much of DC. I’m so sick of the super serious, po-faced foolishness, or the faux-cool attitude that Snyder and co cultivated. So happy to see something as ridiculous as Starro done in live action - and done well.

Uniformly excellent performances, extremely funny gags, a complete disregard for political agendas and social commentary, and a chance for Gunn to stretch his legs without Marvel’s vice-like grip that throttles creativity.

Roll on a third one.

Hm, 45 mins in and im chaffing against this movie a little bit tbh. Im gonna stick with it though. I dont know why, i think its Gunn’s humor and style—im not used to his sensiblities in a DC movie haha but theres nothing outright bad about this movie at all.

If Gunn returns for a sequel he definitely wont be able to pull the same bait and switch and hopefully just goes straight foward with a smaller cast of 5/6.

James Gunn is such an incredible talent to have when it comes to these comic-book/superhero movie univereses and I really do hope he sticks around to do more stuff whether its Marvel or DC.

Damn did he knock it out of the park on this one and its so refreshing to watch a hard R, gory, big budget superhero movie that actually uses real sets and locations and doesn't look like something filmed infront of a fake background the entire time which is something I think Disney/Marvel should do more of.

I thought the entire ensemble cast here was pretty great in particular Idris Elba, Margot Robbie, Daniela Melchoir, David Dastmalchian and Stallone as King Shark.

Also, this is the most I've like John Cena in a role since Train Wreck, because I didn't like him at all in F9, but he was utilized perfectly here and now I'm actually curious about that Peacemaker show.

I’m really excited for the Peacemaker show. John Cena was fantastic. Great performances all around, I can’t really say much negative about this, it just didn’t wow me for whatever reason. Perhaps it was the underwhelming character roster.

im so curious what James Gunn’s next dc project will be

Ok update on my prior post, even though the first 40-45 mins were rough for me Gunn REALLY brought it home in the second half. I damn near ended up loving it. I think for me, the first act is so much Gunn style turned up to 11 so fast I just needed the movie to take a breather so i could get oriented which the second act does very well. The third act is AWESOMELY staged and directed, Gunn really brought it all home.

This movie’s a great time. I think upon rewatch i’ll end up enjoying it even more.

I’m gonna disagree there, i dont think its the violence. I think if theres gonna be any turn off to general audiences its the weird, eccentric d-list characters that this movie anchors on. I can see a lot of regular joe’s scratching their heads at the choice of this roster. Thank goodness Harley’s in here :funny:

GOTG also had weird, obscure, eccentric characters, but it was received very well. BTW, that CinemaScore explains the low projections and low tracking this movie has.
