The Twelve

Least Laughing Mask is in the "has pants" category.

So his mask glows and he has two guns. Very, erm, pulp-hero. Not sure what use a glowing mask is, aside for possibly distracting/unnerving an enemy, and finding your keys at night. :word:

how is it very DC? Also I don't know if the writer means the mask is literally glowing or just bright!?

DC characters are known for masks and such, what some might consider cheesy or dumb..can be something done very well. Its a Golden Age thing.

Makes you an easier target really. If I was inclined to put on a costume and go out and fight zombies/monsters/superhumans/crime in general I'm pretty sure I'd want to be wearing something a little less eye-catching.

They didn't think of stuff like that in the Golden Age.

The goldenage was before common sense was invented eh? I figured as much.

I wonder how many goldenage heroes put on ridiculous costumes, went out to fight crime and just got killed or crippled on their first time out.

It's funny reading some of the comments left here. People seem to hate the Golden Age designs so much it's like they're taking offense to it.

Actually that would be kind of cool! To have one the heroes describe how he went out with a bunch of other rag tag heroes and all or most of the other got killed!

I don't even know what to think of this. The concept sounds serious yet the characters are just....oddly amazing? I mean hairy legs, no pants, robot men....kind of intrigues me.

I wonder..will any of these characters be used?Or will they be in this mini-series,then forgotten soon afterword?

Chances are they'll be forgotten unless this spawns an ongoing somehow. In which case they'll have occasional appearances in big crossover events but otherwise have no real part in the marvel U.

Hey!! They stole my idea!!!

Great minds...

Here are the Timely bios if anyone is interested.

1) Black Widow

Real Name: Claire Voyant (maybe)

Identity/Class: Undead spirit

Occupation: while alive Medium; now servant of Satan

Base of Operations: Hell, but mobile across the world to get to her victims.

First Appearance: Mystic Comics #4 (Timely, June 1940)

Powers/Abilities: Able to kill with a touch, leaving the mark of a Black Widow spider on her victims. Being undead, she is immune to most mortal weapons. Able to transport herself in and out of Hell to kill evil-doers. Satan says she is immortal, but that might not be the case - he is, after all, known for being a lier.

History: "Introducing the strangest, most terrifying character in action picture magazines - the Black Widow. You've heard of the black widow spider - that evil creature whose bite spells doom. Now start the adventures of another black widow - a human tool of Satan whose very touch means death."
(Mystic Comics I #4, 5, 7; U.S.A. Comics #5, All-Select Comics #1, ga) During a seance for the Wagler family (mother, daughter and son James, trying to contact the father), professional medium Claire Voyant was briefly possessed by another personality, changing in appearance and warning them of a terrible doom that would soon overtake them. Terrified, Mother Wagler insisted on leaving, and
Claire, now back to being herself, cursed them for their insults as they departed, then wondered what made her do such a thing. Racing away in their car, the Waglers were blown off the road; Mother Wagler died immediately, and the daughter died soon after in her brother's arms. Believing it was Claire's curse which caused all this, James returned to the medium's home, and gunned her down.

Satan appeared, causing James to flee, gathered up Claire's corpse, and took her down to Hell. There he lay her on an altar, and revived her as The Black Widow, a beautiful but terrifying version of herself with skulls for eyes - the very being who had possessed Claire during the seance! Then he sent her back to Earth to avenge her own death. She appeared before a grieving James, the with a single
touch she caused him to die swiftly and painfully. Returning to her master, Satan charged her with bringing evil souls to him, since he was not content with waiting for them to die a natural death and perhaps repent their sins. "On the upper world are mortal creatures whose hearts are blackened with wickedness and corruption. You, the Black Widow, will bring their souls to me!" (Mystic Comics #5) The Black Widow targeted Garvey Lang, a notorious crime boss.
She approached him during a costumed ball, danced with him, and then, when he asked her for a kiss, removed her mask to reveal her undead visage, just before she killed him with a burning touch to the head.
(Mystic Comics #7) The Black Widow slew two munitions magnates who were selling arms to both sides in World War II.
(U.S.A Comics #5) The Black Widow took on Murder, Unlimited.
(All-Select Comics #1) No synopses available.
(Marvels #1) The Black Widow was among a number of superhumans who joined an attack on a Nazi stronghold in Germany, dropping in from the air. (Presumably she was happy to work with the heroes in attacking the Nazis, since she would find many souls to damn among the Axis forces).

2) Blue Blade

Identity/Class: Normal human

Base of Operations: U.S.A.

First Appearance: U.S.A. Comics #5 (Timely, Summer 1942)

Powers/Abilities: Skilled horseman, good swordfighter.

First Appearance: USA Comics #5 (Summer 1942).

Dates Active: 1942-?

The Blue Blade was a hero who dressed like a bare-chested Musketeer, rode a horse, was good with his fists, and presumably was good with his sword, although he didn't use it in his only appearance. No origin was given for the Blade, although it was established in his only appearance that he was working on the Pacific Coast of the U.S., after having ridden across the country to get there.

3) Captain Wonder

Real Name: Professor Jeff Jordan

Identity/Class: Human mutate

Occupation: Chemistry teacher

Affiliations: Tim Mulrooney (sidekick)

Base of Operations: U.S.A.

First Appearance: Kid Komics #1 (Timely Comics, February 1943)

Powers/Abilities: As strong as "twelve men" (which using the Marvel Universe
Handbooks probably means "able to lift about 960 lbs)

Professor Jordan is a chemistry teacher at a New York City high school. After school one day he is showing off one of his experiments to Tim Mulrooney, his prize student, who unfortunately bounced a rubber band off the back of Jordan's head and so merited afterschool detention. Jordan has discovered what he calls calls the "wonder fluid," which has "more POWER than a dozen men." Unfortunately, Jordan, who is a bit clumsy, drops the vial. It breaks and floods the room with strange fumes. Both Jordan and Tim inhale vast quantities of the fumes. Jordan passes out, but Tim, thinking quickly, opens a window and the fumes escape.
Once the pair recover they discover that they've gained the strength of a dozen men. Naturally they decide to fight crime and the Axis with their new powers. They put on costumes, Jordan calling himself "Captain Wonder" and Tim calling himself "Tim."

4) Dynamic Man

Identity/Class: Android

Occupation: F.B.I.Agent

Affiliations: Professor Goettler (creator, deceased)

Aliases: Curt Cowan

Base of Operations: U.S.A.

First Appearance: Mystic Comics #1 (Timely Comics, March 1940)

Powers/Abilities: Able to fly and to repel bullets by manipulating magnetic
fields. He can also use these fields to attract and manipulate metal objects, yanking guns out of criminals' hands. He can generate electric "thunderbolts". Superhuman strength and inelligence. Able to alter his appearance at will. Possessed X-Ray vision. He is vulnerable to certain rare compounds, such as "lantholum".

History: (Mystic Comics #1-4)
Dynamic Man is described in his very first page as "the Dynamic Man, man of the future, the perfect man of today, devoting his super powers to the progress of civilization and the extermination of all it's (sic) enemies. He constantly endeavors to bring closer the world of tomorrow."
Which is kinda peculiar, since Dynamic Man isn't really a man at all. He's an android. In his first appearance we get his origin. "On a lofty mountain top, unknown to the world, stands a dismal looking castle silhouetted against the sky." In the castle is Professor Goettler, "outstanding scientist," who has created "a perfect creature," which comes to life when Goettler throws a switch an sends "a million volts through his lifeless form."
Goettler throws the switch, but "the excitement is too much for him...he falls dead." Dynamic Man comes to life, ignorant of who and where he is, but he does know "for what I purpose I was brought into this world." (You know he's the man of the future: he's grammatically correct!) Dynamic Man flies from the castle, courteously letting us know what he's capable of: "I can see through walls, change my appearance at will...even create a magnetic field about me to enable me to fly!"
The Dynamic Man takes the examination to become an FBI agent; while taking the test he thinks, "The Professor did a good job on my brain. This exam's a snap!" while one of the other poor unfortunates also taking the exam, some poor schmoe by the name of Mulder, says, "Holy smoke! This exam's tough! What do they think we are, super-brains!"
Dynamic Man, now going by the name of Curt Cowan, aces the exam, of course, does well in the physical examinations, has spotless accuracy and becomes an agent. He also begins fighting crime as the Dynamic Man but "unknown as such, even to the F.B.I."

5) Electro

Identity/Class: Robot

Occupation: Crimefighter

First Appearance: Marvel Mystery Comics #4 (Timely Comics, February 1940)

Powers/Abilities: Superhuman strength. Immune to weapons up to and including
cannon fire. Able to leap miles at a time, and to run at faster than 100 miles an hour. Able to detect radio waves, allowing the Operatives to summon him when needed. Electro could also project images around the area of his "face" -usually the Professor used this trick to communicate with the Operatives.

The reclusive and brilliant Professor Philo Zog wants to help mankind. So he creates a super robot which he calls Electro. Electro is capable of many things; he has superstrength, can run over 100 miles per hour, can perform Hulk-leaps across many miles, and is invulnerable to bullets and cannon fire. Prof. Zog then recruits a dozen men to use as operatives against evil, crime, and foreign subversion in the U.S. Zog tells the men, including Dick Gardner, Operative #3, the best of the group, that they can use Electro when and if they need him, summoning him with a tiny wireless phone. At times Professor Zog communicates with his operatives by projecting his own face on to Electro's head. The group, and Electro, begin by fighting ordinary crime but as time goes by Electro's adventures verge on the fantastic; in one story Electro goes to another planet and helps its inhabitants fight against evil aliens.
Professor Zog, for his part, is a very wealthy man and a brilliant inventor and scientist. In addition to Electro and his dozen operatives, he is assisted by his valet, Mr. Burke, and his secretary Wilkins.

6) Fiery Mask.

Real Name: Jack Castle

Identity/Class: Human mutate

Occupation: Doctor

Base of Operations: Unspecified U.S. city

First Appearance: Daring Mystery Comics #1 (Timely Comics, October 1939)

Powers/Abilities: Superhuman strength. Able to leap huge distances.
Super-breath. Can generate intense heat, able to turn that heat into protective forcefields which can be extended to cover others he is touching.

Jack Castle, a young doctor, is called in by the police to help investigate a case involving a kind of zombie. He gets captured by another zombie and is brought to the zombie's master, an enormous (20' tall) mad scientist, who is using a special ray to make people into "living corpses." The ray doesn't work on Jack (because he knows hypnosis and refuses to submit to the ray), and when the doctor increases the ray's power the ray is destroyed, irradiating Jack Castle and giving him various powers. He then puts on a fiery mask and costume and fights crime, including, at one point, going to Hell and fighting the "Legion of Doom."

7) Witness
Identity/Class: Normal human

First Appearance: Mystic Comics #7 (Timely Comics, December 1941)

Powers/Abilities: Good fighter. He also has some sort of extra-sensory power that allows him to know when and where a crime would be committed, so
that he could be present in time to witness it happening.

History: (Mystic Comics #7-9) The Witness made his debut punishing criminals who broke the law or harmed innocents. Either through personal choice / code, or because of some deeper reason, he would stand back and watch uninvolved until after his targets had actually committed an offence before intervening, even when their actions made their wrongful intentions clear in advance. However once the crime was perpetrated, nothing would stay his wrath, and he had no compunctions about killing his foes.

8) THE PHANTOM REPORTER
Dick Jones is the Phantom Reporter: "ex-All American fullback, ex-collegiate boxing, wrestling, fencing champ! By Day, cub reporter...by night, relentless scourge of the Underworld." He also has another identity: Van Engen, millionaire. That's about it, really; he's got no powers and is a standard square-jawed Golden Age hero, although his costume--blue jacket, fedora, red cape, and a glowing red domino mask--doesn't look bad.
First Appearance: Daring Mystery Comics #3 (Timely)

9)MISTER E

He dresses like the Shadow, but with a domino mask rather than a scarf. He's the wealthy sportsman Victor Jay, but apart from the usual athletic skills and ingenuity that all superheroes have, he has no special powers, nor was any origin ever given for him. Interestingly, though, in his one appearance he clashed with the Vampire, who is described as his "arch-enemy" and who, from the dialogue of the story, has had a number of skirmishes with Mister E.
First Appearance: Daring Mystery Comics #2 (Timely)

10) ROCKMAN

Identity/Class: Unknown - member of human subspecies?
Occupation: Ruler of the underground kingdom of Abysmia

Base of Operations: Abysmia

First Appearance: USA Comics #1 (Timely, August 1941)

Powers/Abilities: Superhuman strength, able to move at great speed, supertough. Doesn't need to breath, able to survive immense pressure, such as at the depths of the oceans. Rockman travelled around in an advanced "digger car" (also known as his "mole ship"). He can fire a beam of red energy from the metal plate on his forehead.

History: (USA Comics #1-4) Rockman was the ruler of Abysmia, an underground
kingdom somewhere beneath the United States, inhabited by the descendents of the first white inhabitants of the American continent. Monitoring the conflict raging above his home, Rockman decided to intervene, and travelled to the surface world to assist the Allies, believing that if the Axis forces should prevail, they would eventually invade his kingdom too.
Created by Stan Lee and Basil Wolverton.

11) MASTERMIND EXCELLO
Real Name: Earl Everett

Occupation: Playboy, operative for Naval Intelligence

Base of Operations: Mobile

First Appearance: Mystic Comics #2 (Timely, April 1940)

Powers/Abilities: Superhuman strength. Telepathic powers, able to mentally
eavesdrop on people. Excellent shot, armed with a "triple propeller pistol".
Carries a "secret high explosive liquid" for demolitions, vials of the acidic
"secret chemical SF44", and "vacu-pads" to allow him to climb sheer surfaces.
Master of disguise.

History: "Known to the world as Earl Everett, society playboy, he is known to
the Naval Intelligence Department as Excello because with his mental wizardry
and remarkable physical feats he excels all others in solving plots against the U.S. government."

12) Laughing Mask
Dennis Burton, a young Assistant D.A. from a long line of law enforcement officers, saw that it had become too difficult to convict gangsters, so he decided to take the law into his own hands, put on a glowing laughing mask, and with two .45s fight crime in his own way. After this appearance he apparently changed his name to the Purple Mask. Apart from his athleticism, he has no powers, and is definitely a killer vigilante, even shooting a bound and helpless gangster. He has a science and crime lab so he has some scientific background.
First Appearance: Daring Mystery Comics #2 (Timely)

Today's reveal is Mastermind Excello (the original). Is it me, or do most of these guys look like scociopaths?

This is starting to look pretty interesting. I'm always a fan of obscure characters.

Being a little crazy was not uncommon in the GA. Vigilantes were common and respectable. The witness wasn't a hero by todays standard, the Punisher is Peter Parker compared to him, ethically speaking. The Punisher would never watch an innocent that was about to get beat up and not intervene or watch an old lady get mugged, but the witness never helped any victims until after they were attacked. He just watched until the crime was committed and then treated the perp to his brand of justice.

Black Widow wasn't even a vigilante or anti-hero she was a villain... and a villian that did nothing but kill people.

Although the clean cut Captain America type was common, the less ethical characters were numerous. I can't remember the name right now but there was a mystic that wouldn't do his hero bit until after he was paid.

Mastermind Excello looks like some bastard hybrid lovechild of Namor and Dr. Strange. Anyway, he doesn't look too shabby, and good to have at least one member out of spandex.

Got to agree with you Dread. First cool looking guy so far.

The big draw for me on this series, and I think a lot of other people as well, is how are these "outdated" characters going to react with the modern Marvel universe?

Also, I'm wondering how modern is it going to be? Is there any word if this is post Civil War Marvel?

So I see next weeks is MR. E... what exactly does this E stand for...
E FOR ECSTACY?
