The Atom says, "CANARY! Listen to me! Zatana is not here to fight we're here to help! We're trying to form a team."

Canary backhands The Atom and says, "Stay out of this Atom or the last thing you'll see is the bottom of my shoe!"

The Atom slams into the wall and slides down.

She is badly dazed.

I'll be lucky if all I have is a concussion and a couple of broken ribs. Luckily Catwoman is per-occupied

She then watches Canary tighten her grip on Zatana as Zatana's eyes slowly begin to roll back.

In another 30 seconds she's out-cold...got to get Canary to let go. Here goes...nothing!

With that she shrinks to microscopic size and flies into Canary's ear.

Time to have some fun...sorry Canary.

The Atom begins touching and lightly kicking inside of her inner-ear

Canary beings to stumble and says, "What's happening?"

The Atom sees that the light coming in through the ears has ceased.

She has covered her ears...she let Zatana go.

The light comes back and The Atom floats out. She grows to 6 inches tall and sees Zatana rubbing her neck.

The Atom floats to Zatana and asks, "Are you okay?"

But before she can respond Canary bolts to The Atom and grabs her.

"AHHH!" She screams as Canary begins squeezing her.

Canary says, "I have no idea what you did you little witch but consider it your last mistake."

The Atom struggles finally she shifts her weight and Canary stumbles forward. The impact forces Canary to let her go and the Atom floats upward looking at Canary she says, "Canary we are trying to help. Zatana and I feel we have chance to form an alliance. To make a difference we want you to be a part of it or do you want to continue trying to choke us?"

Black Canary fixes her mask and flickers her, now, blonde hair. She seems embarrassed at what had just happened. Zatanna lifts herself up, she runs over to Black Canary and Zatanna.
"You know Catwoman has escaped" Zatanna explained, Black Canary gasped and turned to Batgirl, who was supposed to be looking after Catwoman. The Atom dusted herself off. Black Canary bent down to the Atom.
"It's really hard to talk to you like this, so how's about you grow?" The Atom nodded and grew some more. Black Canary smiled.
"Even though you tried to kill me tonight and just now and at the theater, I still want you to join this alliance me and Atom are thinking of"
Zatanna explained. Black Canary slowly stepped back, she thought about what Zatanna had said.
"Me and Black Canary already have an alliance, what makes you think we'll team up with an six inch woman and an ****ty magician?"
Zatanna slowly walked over to Black Canary and slapped her. She then ripped off her mask.
"Because Dinah Lance, I can whip yo' ass in one second, plus my little friend over here can track down Catwoman, so you in? Or shall I turn you into a real Canary?"
Batgirl ran over to Black Canary's side. The Atom floated up, Zatanna opened her palm for the Atom to land on, the Atom had shrunken again.
"So Atom, where's the Cat lady?"
The Atom and Zatanna smiled.

After following Catwoman's scent [which was easy considering she stank of fish], the four girls knelt on the rooftop of a small building. Next to the building was an alleyway, Catwoman was heading towards a group of women.
"I think I know that women!" Zatanna whispered,
"Who is it?"
"Enchantress and I think the other woman is Nightshade, I knew them from this magical alliance thing, a while back, when I was brunette"
Two dark figures emerged from the shadow, they were Nightshade and Enchantress.
"WHO'S THERE!?" Enchantress boomed.
Catwoman gazed up, she spotted the familiar felines.
Zatanna's eyes glowed purple, she curled her fingers. Black Canary twiddled her mask and flicked back her hair. Batgirl tightened her belt and got out a bat-a-rang, the Atom floated and curled her hands into fists.
Black Canary waved her arm, the girls nodded, each one of them winking.
Batgirl handed each girl a bird shaped ear piece, they fixed it on and slowly got up.

"Hey, lady, We're the Birds of Prey and we're ready to kick some ass!" The girls jumped down, soaring for the three villainesses.

The Atom heads straight towards Catwoman.

She's formidable but not she doesn't have any magical powers. I know just enough about her from the police records.

The Atom says, "All-right Catwoman you're a fugitive from Gotham and you're going home. The question do you want to do this the easy way or the hard way?"

Catwoman chuckles at The Atom and says, "What makes you think you can succeed where everyone else has failed little girl? And I do mean little girl; face it you are way out of your league. Why don't you go back to the Barbie Dream House where you belong?"

The Atom steadies herself and says, "Not only is it going to be the hard way, but it's gonna be painful!"

She shrinks to microscopic size and flies through the fibers in her mask into the inner-ear.

From there she proceeds to pulverize her inner ear. She senses the shift in Catwoman's body and realizes that she has fallen over

The Atom says, "At this point I usually leave but in this case I think you need to learn something. Don't forget the little things."

She then continues her attack until she hears Catwoman vomit

The Atom then flies out and sees Catwoman laying on her side almost out cold and very dizzy. She says, "Time for a cat nap I guess."

She then turns towards the others and says, "NEXT!"

"This planet's a mess. Its as though Hitler had been born with superpowers. Our evil doubles run this world with an iron fist. There was no one to stop them from conquering the planet, and few that oppose them, even underground. How many of our doubles are accounted for? Mine's down for the count, anyone else's? There is one person I saw that can help us. Alexander Luthor."
As the Flash and Wonder Woman greeted each other, Clark silently ran Barry's words through his head over and over, contemplating them thoroughly. "Alexander Luthor?" he finally grunted. "I know that, on our world, Lex Luthor's true colors aren't exactly public knowledge, but trust me; he's bad news. Even on this world, I don't think that I can bring myself to easily trust him fully. Even if our doubles from this universe are opposite to our characters, there's no guarantee that that rule holds true for everyone; for all we know, this Earth's Luthor could be exactly the same as our world's." Seeing the slightly disheartened expressions on several of his companions' faces, Superman sighed. "We'll check him out, but I'm not getting my hopes up. We have to be on our guard around him."

Each member of the group exchanged looks. No doubt that some of them had at least heard rumors of Lex Luthor's dirty dealings, but the word of the Man of Steel seemed to confirm them.

Onto the other matter at hand...

"About our counterparts from this world," started Superman, with an even greater look of concern in his eyes, "We've found and fought alternate versions of the Green Lantern, J'onn, and of course yours, Flash." Turning to Wonder Woman, Clark continued, "And your double, Diana?"

After allowing some time for my strength to return, I stumbled through a deserted street and came upon what used to be a corner clothing store. The place was long since abandoned, showing clear signs of it's age. No one had even bothered to clean up the mess left behind by some burglar, as littered glass lined the sidewalks. But it provided me with a suitable in. A quick look inside, and I had soon found a set of old clothes. Knowing that my costume would attract attention, I decided to leave it behind in favor of a more... civilian aesthetic.

From there, I took to the streets, casually working my way along the blocks. There were fewer people than I had suspected, at first. Mostly derelicts, looking for someplace to find a good night's rest. The way I was dressed, they had little qualms with believing I was one of them. They left me alone. But it was when I began to wander out of the slums I had been taken that things started to go bad. Before going from bad to worse.

What the hell?

The moment I laid eyes on a newspaper vender, I had to pause. The paper in question was called The New Gotham Chronicle. Making sure what I was looking at was accurate, I checked the date. It added up with today's. But considering that Wayne Enterprises had a considerable stock in all of the city's major publications, a new one being added was news to me. That's when I noticed something even more odd: There wasn't a single headline that I recognized.

Of course, I'd be the last to tell you that I take any publication seriously these days, but I attribute most of my information on criminals like The Joker and Two-Face from their latest acts. Usually one of them does something of considerable public chaos, and given that there was a recent attack on the city resulting in the breakout at Blackgate Prison, the crime wave was sure to be at an all-time high. It's why I had wanted to get the Despero investigation out of the way... to prepare for the storm, as it were. But this newspaper hadn't reported a single one. Infact, just the opposite... the top stories were articles praising both the Mayor and GCPD, neither of which had garnered any public favor following Two-Face's attack.

I checked the remaining publications on the stands. 'New Gotham Journal'. 'New Gotham Dailies'. 'The New Gotham City Daily Mail'. Everything was New Gotham. Even the GCPD were refered to as the 'NGCPD'. I knew something wasn't right about the city when I first regained consciousness, but there's absolutely no possible way that I could have been out long enough for it to be overhauled into a new one. Was this all a dream? I wasn't sure. All that I knew, and my walk into the deeper city confirmed, was that I was not in the Gotham City that I knew.

Then it hit me. Despero. The last thing that I remembered before succumbing to the blackout was a strange voice echoing through my head. It began to sound off just as he touched my helmet. This city... everything that I don't recognize... was it all apart of some something more? Was my mind being tampered with by the creature? Was anything I was experiencing even real? I would have thought that impossible, but after Brainiac attempted the same thing on my subconcious, showing me the holograms of my parents...

It didn't matter. However I had gotten here, I needed to get out, and get back to the real Gotham City. With Despero still on the loose, and the metahumans still missing, I needed to review my case before I took another shot at him. Then save Commissioner Loeb's life from The Joker. There was no time to waste, but time didn't agree. Because as I began to scout for some sort of means of transportation... I ran into trouble.

"Hey, you! Get over here!"

At first, I avoided the call. But that became impossible once I felt a hard grip latch onto my shoulder. I spun, instantly confronted with a bizarrely dressed man in head-to-toe leather. I wouldn't have taken him seriously, if not for the fact that upon his lapel lied the badge of a Gotham City Police Officer. Then it all came into place. Another missing link in a line of unrecognizable elements of this Gotham City was presenting itself.

"Are you deaf?!", He barked into my face. "When I tell you to come, you better sure as hell show up!"

The only way I could possibly react was with a blank expression. Followed by a question I'd soon come to regret. "...I'm sorry. Is there a problem, Officer?"

He seemed clearly annoyed. "What are you, a wiseguy? You know what time it is."

I shook my head, indicating my watchless wrist. "Is there a reason I should?"

"What's going on here?"

Turning, I found myself facing yet another one. But this one was on a motorcycle... one of which I distinctly recognized as a concept design from Wayne Enterprises' tech division. But it was just a prototype far from any kind of mass production, let alone a fully automated application for the GCPD. My eyes widened, continuing to stare at the cycle, as the other officer began to converse with his partner.

"It seems we've got a straight Code-126. This guy's outside way past the curfew."

"Did he have clearance?"

"He doesn't look like he owns a damn wallet, let alone a security clearance."

I turned back to them, confused. Curfews and clearances? What were they talking about?

"I'm not sure what you mean. I wasn't aware of any curfew."

Instantly, the first one grabbed me by the arms, angered. "You tryin' to be smart, *******?!"

"Officer 3267-6 to Base. Repeat, Officer 3267-6 to Base. We've got a Code-126. Requesting prep for arrest order."

If the events that led up to that moment hadn't convinced me yet, that was when I began to realize that I had walked into a situation far beyond my own control. And anyone who knows me will tell you one thing. I hate situations out of my control.

"Now hold on, for a minute. I'm telling the truth. I didn't know about a-..."

"Screw protocol. Prepping suspect now."

Before I could react, I was taken by the wrists, spun around, and slammed ontop of the cycle's rather large hull. It was obvious that I was about to be handcuffed and taken in, if such actions were even apart of their apparent 'protocol'. What in the hell was going on?

"Doesn't matter. I got the request order now. He's going downtown."

I was beginning to struggle. And it was obvious that the first one didn't expect me to be as strong as I am, because on the first tug, I nearly knocked him down.

"Ugh... Good. The sooner we get him en route to base, the happier I'll be. I can barely hold him down..."

"He could be hopped up on something. Want me to do a blood scan?"

"If you're gonna, then hurry. This guy's gotta get cuffed, fast."

Blood scan?

That was when I became a bit concerned. I had never heard of a blood scan in any bureau of any police station in the United States, much less the world. These officers... no, these men were carrying devices far too advanced for an ordinary city's Police Department. And I was about to be subjected to one of them.

"Keep holding him. This is going to hurt."

"ARRRGH!"

Every nerve in my body seemed to suffer a shockwave of pain, as one of them stuck something into my arm. The device eventually beeped, and he took it out of me, leaving two deep cuts oozing with blood. I nearly passed out from the pain, as I fell slightly limp, the 'officer' wasting no time to use my weakened state to his advantage.

"Not so freakin' tough now, are ya?!"

I heard the device beep again.

"..."

"What?"

"This... this can't be right..."

"What can't be right? Did you do the scan wrong?"

"No, I... look, something must be wrong with the equipment. This can't possibly be right."

"What the hell are you talking about?"

"The blood identity match. It says he's... Bruce Wayne."

Both give a long, silent pause, looking at me, before looking back at the device.

"Do it again."

"I did it right the first time. This thing obviously doesn't work the way it should."

"No, you didn't. Because even if that thing was screwed up, it wouldn't say he's Wayne."

"Look, let's just forget. He's stunned, so let's get him back to base and do another scan there. I-... HEY!"

As they were distracted, I took my chance. Sending a high kick into the first one's ribs, I spun, and jabbed the other one in the neck. He writhed in pain, coughing, as I dropped to the ground and performed a sweep kick, tripping him and knocking him into a wall. The first one was already up again by the time I stood, so I took to him fast. A flying kick to his face, followed by a jab to his arm and twist, cracking as much of the bone as I could. He dropped to the ground, screaming in pain, leaving me with enough time to dart down a nearby alleyway.

"AHHH, DAMMIT! My arm! He broke my arm!"

It wasn't long before I heard footsteps chasing after me, as I leaped over a chain mail fence. In hindsight, and with perspective, I made a number of mistakes in attacking them. For one, I could have easily stolen their cycle and gained enough distance to lose them. Another mistake was not letting them take me to their Police Headquarters, so I could gain further insight into not only where I am, but who I'm dealing with in a city ran by an obvious fascist.

Too late for that. Need to keep running. As soon as I lose them, I can make sense of this madness.

- - -

"Code 284! Code 284! Suspect resisting arrest! Request for backup, immediately!"

The NGCPD Peace Officer stopped, in the middle of the alleyway, exhausted and out of breath. Their suspect was not only strong, but he was fast. Almost at a superhuman level, like nothing he had ever seen in his years on the force. But it didn't matter. As soon as backup arrived, the bastard would be facing hard time in a cell at the Arkham Correctional Facility. Nothing short of his startlingly similar DNA to Bruce Wayne would save him.

"Enough."

The officer turned, standing upright, startled by the grave voice that came from above him. The officer was praying to God that he didn't just hear the voice that he thought he heard. It couldn't be him. Anyone but him...

"W... Who's there?"

"Behind you."

The officer turned once again, but not before finding his neck in the grip of an rock hard hand, cloaked in an armored spiked gauntlet glove. The officer began to physically panic, as the figure lifted him off of his feet with raw strength.

"You're going to call off your troops, right now. It's obvious that your people have failed."

"B... But sir! He's just-..."

The figure sneered. "I know what he is. But you know what happens to people who don't obey my command."

The officer's eyes went wide in fright, as he nodded his head. "I'll call them off! I'll call them off!"

"That's better."

The figure dropped the officer, as he scattered to his feet, still in sheer fright of what was before him. The horned figure stared, from the darkness, as he looked towards the skies. There was a signal blanketing the clouds. A signal with a symbol in the shape of a nightmarish Bat.

"You're also going to call Boss Gordon, and tell him I'll be coming in late."

The officer didn't protest. He simply nodded in response. The figure turned, his long cloak billowing in the wind as the leather of it cracked, along with the thunder above New Gotham City.

Zatanna looks over at the Atom who had just finished off Catwoman. Batgirl ran over to Catwoman and tied her up.
"Stay back Atom, this girly is for me!"Zatanna declared, heading for Enchantress. Black Canary kicked Nightshade in the temple of her stomach. Nightshade spat out blue blood and leaped backwards. She spun round and faded into the shadows. The Atom and Black Canary looked around.
"HERE!" Nightshade comes leaping out from the shadows, Nightshade leaped through the body of Black Canary, forcing Black Canary to the floor. Nightshade spun back into a human. The Atom grew six inches so she could be seen. Nightshade gasped at how small she was.

Zatanna swung a kick at Enchantress' face. Enchantress grabbed Zatanna's foot and pushed her back.
"Why are you working with Catwoman?"
"She's working for me, she's on a mission to get the Jade Jewel, to complete...." Zatanna quickly grabbed Enchantress and slammed her against the wall.
"PEELS A OTNI LLAF"
Zatanna chants, her eyes still gleaming purple. Zatanna waits but nothing happens, Enchantress smirks and slams her knee into Zatanna's stomach. Zatanna gasps and grabs her stomach. Enchantress then sends a magical force at Zatanna, sending Zatanna into the walls.

Nightshade shifted into a shadow, she wrapped around the Atom and then threw her over to Zatanna. Black Canary and Batgirl launched up.
Without warning, Black Canary opened her mouth and screamed. Nightshade burst into the shadows. Enchantress conjured a force field and deflected the scream. The sound waves blasted Batgirl, Batgirl grabbed her ears and slowly fell to the floor. Blood dripped out of her nose. Black Canary ran over to Enchantress and did a roundhouse kick on her. Zatanna tried to get up but Nightshade had the shadows hold Atom and Zatanna against the wall.

Enchantress wiped away the blood and ripped of her cape. She slowly walked over to Catwoman and un-tied her. Catwoman slowly gets up, she growls, she slowly gets out a whip from her boot and heads towards a defenceless Batgirl.
"Feel the pain!" Catwoman lifted her hand up as well as she lifted the whip back, aiming it for Batgirl. Zatanna and the Atom were to dizzy to struggle free. Black Canary ran over.
"NO!" Black Canary ran infront of Catwoman. Echantress quickly grapped the whip and broke it. She put her hand on Catwoman's head. Catwoman's eyes rolled back. Nightshade finally emerged from the shadows and stood by Enchantress. Zatanna and the Atom whispered to eachother. Zatanna covered the Atom in a special magic force field.
"Ready?"
the Atom nodded. Zatanna threw the Atom. The Atom soared through the wind and blasted into Nightshade's back. Nightshade screeched and fell to the floor, smoking rising from her back.

"What happened?"
"The Birds of Prey just wooped your ass" Zatanna ran up to Enchantress and conjured up a magical sword. She plunged the sword into Enchantress.
"YOU THINK IT'S THAT EASY?" Enchantress shouted, she soon faded into smoke and disappeared into the skys of Gotham.
Zatanna held Black Canary. Catwoman was on the floor, her whip rapped round her.
"Get Batgirl and follow me"

Zatanna picked up Batgirl. Black Canary pressed her ear piece down. A black porche sped from around the corner. The doors slowly opened.

"The days grow shorter and the nights are getting long, feels like we're running out of time," - Fight The Good Fight, Triumph

The apartment was covered in blood. That was the thing that stood out the most. He stood in the doorway as the sirens wailed, getting closer. The body was in several parts around the room, but he could tell that the man had had a beard. He knelt down and touched one splatter of blood with his gloves and brought it to his lips. The blood was still warm. So the killer had only just left. Or hadn't left at all.

The Question drew his guns cautiously. But nothing moved in the deserted apartment. He moved inside slowly, stepping in the puddles of blood. The room was bleak, sparse, except for a camp bed that was in the corner and an old tv that was hooked up opposite it. The only definate features were the blackboard that had been wiped clean and the ashes of what appeared to be newspaper clippings.

A few hours earlier Vic had been contacted by this man. Apparantly he knew information that he would find interesting. He certainly knew enough about him already to be worth seeing. And it seemed that someone had gotten to him first. A scrap of paper caught his eye, pinned to the wall. It had been ripped off, and the smallest amount of paper was left attached. There were two names on the scrap. But he knew something at least.

Rip Hunter was dead.

It was the dream again. Bombs were falling and the city was burning around him. Every turn of my head saw new flames erupt with a ferocious kind of passion. Figures flitted around in the semi-darkness, slaughtering, and there was a laughter. A cold, high laughter that made every bone shudder. A person shouted something, but it was muffled by the poor clarity of the dream, and then they all moved forwards as one, shouting and jeering and firing our guns. And then we all died.

It was raining. The rain was pooling in his hat, so he turned up the collar of his trenchcoat. He looked up at the building that he'd come from Hub City to find. According to certain contacts, this was where he could find one of the two people on the list. Sacred Heart Hospital, New York. He walked into the reception area, his hat pulled down low over his face, trenchcoat wrapped tightly around him.

"I'm here to see Dr. Holt," he growled.

The receptionist didn't even look up.

"Do you have an appointment?" she asked.

"I'm an old friend paying a visit," Vic said, his face totally blank under the hat.

"Then I can't help you Mr-"

She looked up. Her mouth formed a silent 'O'.

"Don't scream," he suggested helpfully. She nodded, still silent.

"Where is he?" he asked quietly.

"His office is on the fourth floor," she squeaked.

The Question walked to the elevator. He reckoned it would be well over a minute before she regained control of her senses and called for security. About two minutes before they responded. He had enough time to get to the office and barricade himself in. The cheerful jingle irritated him slightly, as he was sure it was meant to. The doors popped open, and he hurried out, quickly arriving at the door that proclaimed:

Dr. Terrance Holt - Chief Of Surgery

Vic raised an eyebrow, and opened the door. He was sat at his desk, and his head flicked up as the Question walked in. He was shorter than he'd expected.

"Can I help you?" he asked.

"You must be one of the youngest Chiefs of Surgery in history," Vic stated.

"That's me," Terry Holt said. Vic grabbed a chair that was against the wall and jammed it under the door handle. Terry stood up.

"I suggest you leave through that door now, before I throw you out the window," he said, fists clenched.

"Terry Holt, also known as Mister Terrific II, defender of New York city," Vic monotoned.

"So from the get-up, I'm guessing that you're the guy that's been terrorising Hub City. What the hell are you doing in my town?" he growled. Vic almost smiled. Direct. He liked that.

"I'm here to save the universe,"

the Atom nodded.

The Atom sees the Porsche speeding around the corner and says to Canary, "Nice ride, but just so you know I am not going to ride in the glove box to save on room."

Canary glances at Atom and, much to her surprise, even grins at The Atom. She says, "Make sure no one sits on The Atom. Come on we got to get moving Birds. Catwoman is pretty much done the GCPD can take it from here with her."
The Atom smirks.

I'm now part of a group...this is so COOL!

She looks around and says, "What's our next move?"

Doris checks into Gateway City's finest hotel the Excalibar in the finest suite they have under an alias and in disguise.

She walks around the suite and begins studying the places the Cheetah has been and a map of the city.

If I concentrate my work here around the museum and university areas I should do well.

Doris then pulls out several small discs.

These holo-emmters will be priceless and very effective in luring the Cheetah out. If I can get her to open field of some kind I can be more effective...then again if I play my cards right I might be able to stop her with just a token bribe or two.

She chuckles at that. Then changes into her workout gear and heads to the Hotel's spa and health-club.

I remember well enough of the Oracle's prophecy, and have more than enough reason to believe that the betrayer and tyrant foretold in the Pythia's vision would be Luthor. Without proof, though, I cannot act upon it. It's somewhat comforting to know that Superman distrusts him as well.

If we do find his double, I daresay we should be more careful than with any of our own.

"She is beaten, her power broken and her weapons destroyed. With the others disposed of as well, that leaves....who? Batman? And you?"

Superman and Batman.

I cannot think of any two from the Patriarch's World that better exemplify the very best of their ways. One a dedicated and selfless servant of the world and a force against tyranny, the other a tireless crusader driven by a brilliant mind and indominable spirit. Even while we are all comparatively new to the adventurer's life, I can tell that the kind. Heroes among heroes.

So what monsters must their opposite doubles be?

I shudder to even think of such a confrontation. And yet that very battle seems to be inevitable. I see as much in the eyes of my compatriots.

"We must find our way home and depose Despero, I'm sure you all agree. But before we do that, we have an obligation to liberate this world from the tyrants that have crushed it. Whatever lies ahead for us, I will be honored to fight alongside all of you."

"Before we encountered Catwoman, me and Batgirl were after the Joker's counterpart, I think her name is umm, Harley Quinn, yes Harley Quinn" Batgirl's head rested on Black Canary's shoulder.
The driver was female and had long blonde hair.
"Any abilities?" Zatanna wondered,
Black Canary took her mask off and rubber her eyes. She took off her blonde wig and revealed silky brunette hair tied back into a bun.
"No, which is good, considering all of us aside Batgirl have abilities, but she has access to a lot of weapons" Black Canary rubbed her eyes.
The Atom sat on the door handle, her legs swinging down. Zatanna looked at her blonde hair, she then looked at her nails, the pink polish still managed to stay on after a couple of fights and falls.
"Dinah, why are you undressing?"
"I need to do something before we find Harley Quinn, that reminds me, Zinda, stop here" Black Canary tapped the driver on the shoulder. The driver nodded and opened the doors.
"Well see ya in a second" Black Canary jumped out and into a shop, she had a black coat wrapped around her.
The Atom gave a look to Zatanna that read: What's up with her?

Batgirl's head fell, her head slammed on the leather seats. Her eyes opened and she got up, slamming her palm to her head.
"Ow"
There was a loud bang and Dinah came running out, she jumped in the car and shut the door. The driver pressed down on the accelerator and the car sped off. The Atom and Zatanna's jaws dropped.
"What was that!?"
"Carmela Bertinelli"
The car eventually slowed down, The Atom and Zatanna were still curious.
"You killed her?"
"Zatanna dearest, I simply wounded her in the stomach, maybe she'll die, I don't know, but as you may know, I'm a detective, but I've had a personal thing with Carmela for years now, I found out she was working a late shift at her husband's pub so I took the chance" Black Canary explained, fixing her mask on and slapping on her wig.
Zatanna rolled her eyes.

The Atom smiled at how careless Black Canary was. Suddenly, without warning, the tire burst. The car spun out of control, the tires screeching, the driver tried to take control of the car but couldn't. Another tie went out. Then, the car smashed into a lampost, smoke coming out. Harleen Quinzel stepped forward, she was not in her Harley Quinn outfit.
"I just want to be left alone"

The Atom looks at her partners and says, "I've heard of her she's almost as out there as the Joker. But there is something inside of her that can be reasoned with."

They look at her as if to say, "Are you sure about that?"

Batgirl says, "Don't fall for it Atom I've seen her pull this before."

The Atom looks at Batgirl and says, "Think about this if she wanted she could've done us in the car or tried already."

The Atom begins to float towards Harley and says, "Harley..."

She shouts back, "It's Harleen!"

The Atom says, "All-right Harleen what happened to Harley? What happened to you?"

Doris walks back into her suite after walking around Gateway City rather pleased with herself.

She pulls out one of the extra holo-emmters and smiles.

I have planted dozens of these all over the city and with the PDA I can control what images are projected out of them. I have programmed each of the to emmit images of either Wonder Woman or something tied to Greek Mythology to draw Cheetah out. They are also designed to shut down and disenergrate when she gets within a foot by locking in on her acellerated body chemistry.

She pulls out a bottled water and begins to drink it.

Doris smiles and programs the PDA.

In about one hour the fun starts.

The Atom spotted Harleen holding a gun, swirls of smoke coming out the end. She realized Harleen had shot the tires. Harleen's blonde hair was tied back into a ponytail. Batgirl jumped over to the Atom. The Atom tried to stop Batgirl but couldn't. Batgirl slammed her fist into Harleen's face, not showing any regret. She went in for another punch but Harleen smacked her gun into Batgirl's stomach. Black Canary held back Batgirl whilst Zatanna held back Harleen. The Atom felt actually small in personality wise for once, she couldn't control the fight at all, but she could try, after all Zatanna though her mouth was big enough.
"Harleen, you have the right to be...uh...handed over to the birds of prey!"
"If you're going to say it, say it right, it's Harleen Quinzel"
The Atom hovers up to eye view of Harleen.
"I'm just going through some hard times now, now leave before I shoot Batsy over here"
"Batsy? I'll show you batsy!" Batgirl struggled from Black Canary's hold. Black Canary rolled her eyes.
"Hard times? Like nearly killing detective Dinah Lance in the factory?" Black Canary shot back at Harleen. Harleen's innocent act was burst, Black Canary knew what was next as soon as she saw Harleen smirk.
"ZATANNA DODGE!" It was too late, Black Canary chucked Batgirl to the side. Harleen flipped out of Zatanna's hold and punched her in the face. Harleen twirled her gun round her fingers, she grabbed Zatanna by the hair and put the gun against her head.
"Boy what an eventful night"
"It's getting bright, we need to wrap this up, Batgirl go wild" Black Canary stood back, the Atom jumped on her palm.
She made a nervous look at Black Canary.
"Don't worry...."
BANG

Zatanna screamed in pain, she looked down at her wound and fell to the ground. Everything became a blur, she could hardly see Batgirl beat the holy crap out of Harleen. She saw two blurs run over to her.

Zatanna opened her eyes and slowly got up, a gold aura fuzzed around her. All she could see was white.
"Am I....wait no, if I was dead I would see father...."
White figures swirled around her, she rolled her eyes.
"I'm in purgatory and even here I don't get a straight forward answer from someone" Zatanna reached out to the figures, her hand phased through them. Finally, a figure placed into shape. It was her mother, whom she hardly knew, Sindella.
"I am dead!"
Sindella shook her head, she reached out to Zatanna.

Zatanna was in Black Canary's arms, Zatanna's eyes flickered open, she looked down to where her wound was. She seemed puzzled, maybe it was her mother, Sindella. But that didn't matter, what did matter was Harleen was dealt with.
"ZATANNA!"
Zatanna shot up, she smiled at the Atom. Harleen was on the floor, blood dripping from her nose. Batgirl held the gun Harleen had.
"Here you go detective" Batgirl handed the gun to Black Canary. Batgirl then felt a cold hand rap around her gold boot. The hand pulled back Batgirl's foot. Batgirl slammed to the ground, putting her hands first. Harleen slowly got up, she kicked the gun out of Black Canary's hand.
"I try to be good, I try to love the Batman but no"
Harleen turned the gun at Black Canary. Black Canary smirked, she opened her mouth when.
"AH!" Harley screeched in pain. An arrow had been impaled into her stomach. Harley clutched onto the arrow as she stumbled to the floor.
"Oh god, Batman warned me about this one..."

A flash of purple material swirled round the girls. A purple cape blew in the breeze. The darkness of Gotham hid the person's face. The streetlight flickered, a female figure leaned against a damaged car with the driver sitting in the backseat. The female clutched a crossbow.
"You can't have a party without the huntress"

The Atom sees The Huntress and says, "Wow this part just keeps more and more...bizarre by the minute."

She shakes her head and says, "If anyone else told me about this I would've thought they had seen one too many Tim Burton movies."

Just then she notices Harley's wound and says, "NO! Not like this!"

She shrinks to mircoscopic size and flies into an opening in the wound. The Atom forces the arrow out and then proceeds to tie some of the torn tissue together.

When she finishes she flies over to an open window near an apartment. Finds a sink and rinses herself.

The Atom then floats over to the middle of the group and grows to about 6 inches.

She says, "All-right I have an issue and it's a big one. I have a problem with killing people or leaving them to die. If we do tha then what is really the difference between us and them. Really all we are then is the Joker with a set of morals to make us all sleep better at night."

The Atom takes a deep breath and says, "With that in mind if I see anyone who might be mortally wounded. I will do what I can to save their lives. Anyone gotta problem with that?"

Batgirl gasps,
"So it's OK for her to leave me to die? In this day and age Atom, us heroes are more, let's see....dark, dieing is often just an accident caused by us careless heroes. Me and Black Canary created this femme fatale group to have more of the Gotham spirit"
The Atom sighs, she takes no notice of Batgirl, since she is only a teen. Huntress walks forward. The attention fades off of Harleen. Black Canary growls and steps towards Huntress.
"You weren't invited to the party"
The Huntress smirks and ignores the comment, she walks around and observes everyone, most fascinated by the Atom.

Zatanna flicks her hair back.
"Even though I've been nearly killed about four times this night, I still think this is fun" The girls then hear a sinister chuckle, they realize that they're attention had faded from Harleen. The five girls spin round and see a pouch of blood, where Harleen was.
"Dammit! Huntress, get lost, this is for actual heroes, not wannabe's"
Batgirl leans over to Zatanna and the Atom and whispers,
"She cussed her deep"
Typical teenagers.
The Huntress cackles, she continues to ignore the Black Canary.
"Yes well sorry I was late, Dinah Lance, a detective had shot my mother, don't worry, when I find her she'll die"
Black Canary tried to hold back her grin, oh, a face of with Huntress? Who would ever win?

Zatanna walked back over to the damaged car and opened the backseat door.
"Is the car safe to drive?"
The driver nods, a look of fear is on her face. Black Canary and the Huntress stare gravely at each other.
Huntress should feel intimated, considering she's only about two years older than Batgirl, but she isn't. Batgirl walks towards Zatanna, the Atom resting in one of her utility belt pockets. Black Canary comes rushing up to them.
"Zinda get to the driver's seat, Batgirl, Zatanna & Atom, get in the car quick, whatever happens---"
Black Canary and the girls got in the car, the driver (Zinda) shut the door and drove off. Black Canary took a deep breath....
"---Huntress is joining this group" Huntress was sitting next to Batgirl, all the girls didn't even notice.
Zatanna screamed, she was a sucker for scary stuff. The Atom shot a weird look at Zatanna, Zatanna blushed.
"Oh god, can we just get back to wherever the base of operations is, then we will sort this out once and for all, yes?"
Zatanna slides down her seat and leans over to the Atom. She carefully whispers,
"If a better option comes along, I think we should take it, it's better than these nut jobs"

The Atom says, "I'm getting so cramped in here."

She floats onto Zatana's shoulder and whispers, "Eventually we will, but for now I want to keep an eye on them they're a little unstable. I'm worried about innocents in the cross-fire."

Batgirl notices The Atom whispering and says, "Do you have a problem Atom?"

The Atom steadies herself as she stands on Zatana's shoulder and says, "Matter of fact I DO!You mention the spirit of Gotham and all of that. You wear a bat like a certain gentleman I've worked with more than once, and as a dark and angry as he is he would never kill another human being villian or not. He's not perfect but he's been at this costumed gig longer than us, and has probably forgotten more about this then any of us will ever know. That's who I usually think of when I hear about the Spirit of Gotham."

She glares at The Atom for a moment and then turns away staring out into the city.

Atom whispers to Zatana, "Don't leave me alone with her. Otherwise she might make sure I accidentally fall into a paper-shredder."

Doris begins walking around the city and activates one of the holo-emmeters.

Just then an image of Wonder Woman appears on top of a building.

Here kitty-kitty-kitty.

A few moments pass just then the Cheetah comes charging the roof-top as the image disappears.

Cheetah is visbly angry and begins screaming in frustration and tearing up the roof top.

The police arrive and Doris smiles and leaves.

She gets back to her hotel and opens up her PDA. The PDA screen reads, "Information gathered." Doris then downloads it to her lap-top.

Excellent the holo-emmter took scans of The Cheetah's brain-waves and patterns. Now I can synchronize the holo-emmeters so that only she sees what they are showing.

She opens a bottled-water and takes a swig.

"Tomorrow the real fun starts."

None of this makes any sense.

I haven't stopped running since I was forced to assault those officers. Yet no matter how much distance I manage to cover, I can still hear the sirens as loud as before. They must've called every man in the city for backup. Yet despite all of my present causes for concern, my mind rests solely on the fact that I've truly found no logical reference for my situation. In this city, for the first time since I can remember, I am truly lost. Forced to become a literal fugitive of an insane, fascist law enforcement.

And even still, there are more troubling aspects to this bizarrely crafted nightmare of a tale. The fact that the city is called 'New Gotham'. The feeling that what my eyes see and what my heart tells me are entirely different. The way those officers looked at me when I was identified. It was as if I wasn't meant to be here... wherever 'here' truly is. And I'm beginning to think that the answers to these questions are only going to be more unsettling.

This has to be a dream. There's no other possibility. I have to be trapped within my own mind; trapped within my own surpressed vision of what Gotham City could become if I had left it to the vermin eating at it's soul. And the worst part about this is... if I'm right, and none of this is truly real... I have absolutely no idea how to escape. I thought I had prepared myself for every eventuality, but this is the one situation that extended beyond my imagination's reach.

It's almost like my worst fear come to life.

That's it. Keep running. Do the work for me.

From the shadows above, a quiet figure nurtures itself on the look on Bruce Wayne's face. That increasing paranoia, digging itself into his mind and affecting his body in ways that Wayne probably couldn't even begin to comprehend. He knows that look, and it causes a smile upon lips that never do. In this world, in this Gotham, Bruce Wayne has been turned into everything he hates: A fleeing criminal, at the mere mercy of justice. The figure moves slowly along, as Wayne darts into an alleyway below him.

Even for his impressive stamina, Wayne's finally running out of breath. His body is giving into it's own limitations. The figure looks upon him, knowing the time for them to face one another is quickly approaching. If the figure allows his prey the time to rest, he'll be stronger, and nearly impossible to take down in a solo effort.

But he isn't strong anymore. New Gotham City has taken it's toll, and effectively weakened Bruce Wayne.

And The Dark Knight will collapse upon his frailties like a bat out of hell.

I may have lost them.

The sirens stop just as I begin to rest, pressing myself against a wall. It could easily be a trick, but for now, I'm going to accept it at face value. Heart's pumping again. It's getting hard to keep focus. I need this rest. Need to come up with a strategy to separate myself back into anonymity. If that's even possible.

I take a deep breath, wipe the sweat from my brow, and dig into my pockets. Even though I discarded most of the suit, I wasn't about to leave myself unarmed in an environment as unfamiliar as this. The utility belt for the under-armor could only hold so much... a couple batarangs, a taser, and some night vision goggles. But what I need now is probably the simplest item in my arsenal: A support cable, usually reserved for one of my spare grapnels. Taking one of the batarangs, I wrap the cable around each tip, and snug it in place, effectively creating a makeshift Batrope. Not nearly as efficient as my actual ones, but it'll have to do. Time isn't in my hands anymore.

Stepping out to the middle of the alley, I look to the skies, measuring my distance between the ground and the building's roof. It's about sixteen and a half feet high. Wouldn't have minded something shorter, but I've climbed worse. Taking the cable into my hands, I look around to make sure no one's watching, and swing it over my head. Then release, allowing the batarang to fly up and latch onto one of the guard rails above. It snares immediately, to which I let out a sigh of relief.

On the ground, even the worst cop in the city could have cut me off at any given moment. But let's see them come to me on my terms.

"HNGH!"

After a brief struggle, I manage to slip myself over the rail, and crawl onto the roof. I never realized how hard that was without the costume. At least then, I could be agile. But wearing clothes like these only slows me down under the excess weight. I need to find someone willing to trade them in for something better. Something sleeker, and darker... enough to allow me to move throughout the city unseen. I'm working at a clear disadvantage.

Looking to the rooftops ahead, I look for a clear path to sanctuary. But I have to stop, and take in what I'm seeing.

43519488ua5.png

I don't care what I've been telling myself. This is not Gotham City. And not even a city... it's almost as if I've found my way into another world.

"Like it?", a grim voice calls out to me. My eyes widen in shock, genuinely startled. But before I can turn to acknowledge whoever found me, I'm hit by a punch that was so fast that I couldn't even see it coming.

My back hits the roof with a sickening crack, as I try to roll into a defense. But I'm hit again, before I even realize it. This time, with a kick that's so forceful that I nearly fall off. I've never fought anyone who can hit so fast... so precisive. But I'm not in the mood to find out how. Gathering myself, as blood starts to pour out of my nose, I look up.

I can only catch the slightest glimpse of my attacker, as he flies into me full force. Before I know it, I'm falling. Rain basking me in a light drizzle as I flail about, trying to soften my landing before it's too late. But something grabs me, and pulls, violently swinging me into the opposite direction. I fall so fast that I can't even think, before I find myself crashing onto the pavement below. What in the hell is going on?!

My attacker lands right after I do. But from the sound of it, he's actually managed to land on his feet. The thunder in the sky cracks like a whip, as I angrily peer up, trying to prepare myself for another attack.

But I... I can't even a form a sentence at what I'm looking at.

"I'm surprised, really."

He... it... whatever it is, peers at me in contempt. Is this some sort of joke?

"Usually my prey doesn't live to make it this far. This may very well be the most effort I've had to put into someone in quite awhile."

I try to react, or even respond... but I'm still struck by what he's wearing. Who he looks like. Who he sounds like. Even his posture, and the way he commands himself... and that agility. There's no possible way.

He smiles, almost like an animal that's been uncaged. "Then again, I've never had to hunt myself before."

It is. He's just confirmed it.

I'm looking at... Batman.

I back away, trying to make sense of this. But he doesn't give me the chance. Whatever I'm really facing, I have to fight it. As he lunges towards me, I duck, barely avoiding one of his kicks. I go in for one myself, but before I can even land it, he grabs it, and twists, violently spinning me onto the ground. My head buzzes as he effortlessly overpowers me, grabbing my shirt and throwing my body against a wall.

So much pain... can't take this...

"Don't be so surprised. I found my way out of that poor excuse for a kick by the time I was seventeen."

Even the way he gloats sounds exactly like me. He's got to be some sort of imposter. And a very skilled one, apparentally.

I push myself up and go for a roundhouse punch, forcing myself into something I'm not nearly prepared to pull off. And even still, he blocks it, and counters it with a spinning kick that nearly tears my jaw off. I kneel over in pain, but he doesn't stop. He grabs me by the scalp and knees me in my chest.

"ARRRGH!"

45979930sq4.png

"STAY DOWN!"

Collapsing, I grab my chest in pain. Heart's not even beating, at this point. It's sprinting towards failure. And the pain becomes numbing. He stands above me, as I notice how different, however slightly, his costume truly is from mine.

"My, I think that was actually one of your ribs.", He says, mocking me with every venom-laced word. "How many more do you think I can take out, Bruce?"

He calls me Bruce.

I weakly try to pull myself back into a stand, but I can't. He might have been right. My ribs may be broken. And if that's the case, he's already won. I can't fight him. Even as quick as the fight actually was, he's beaten me.

"What do you want with me?!", I demand, gritting my teeth in anger and anguish. "Who are you?!"

"For someone they're supposed to call 'The World's Greatest Detective', you certainly don't have alot of answers."

He grabs me, and throws me to the ground, further causing me injury. My eyes close, as I try to work through the pain. But it's too intense. And now I understand why: he's attacking every one of my weaker spots.

"You're beginning to get it, aren't you?", He asks, stepping onto my back. "Let me paint the picture for you. It's a cold night. You're just a boy. But you don't worry. You have the perfect parents to protect you, as you run along without a care in the world."

"And then a madman comes out of the night and rips away everything you hold dear with two shots. Sound familiar?"

I don't answer. I don't need to. He can see it on my face.

"Of course it does. I've just described the day you were born.", He snarls. "Or rather, the day we were born."

"You're... not... me."

He smiles again. The cowl makes it all the more menacing. "You're right, Bruce. I'm better."

He goes in for another punch, as I brace for impact.

"I'm The Devilman, and this is how I came to be..."

Zatanna smiles,
"I hear you, Wonder Woman made such better company when me and you last saw her" Zatanna explains.
Batgirl is now chatting to Huntress, she doesn't seem to mind her company. Black Canary climbed to the front of the car and sat next to the Driver.
"Back to the clock tower, O.K?"
"Yes, Ms Lance"
"And back to what I was saying, I'll unlock the back doors, then you swerve the car, so Huntress falls out" Black Canary whispers, the Driver nods and presses down on the accelerator. Zatanna looks around,
"I'll be right back, everyone" A cloud of smoke swirls around her. The cloud of smoke soon fades away and in Zatanna's seat is an empty space. The Atom gasps, after all she said about Zatanna using magic care-free, she still does it.

Zatanna was in Metropolis, she stood in a dark alleyway.
"Enohp" Purple smoke eroded from her hand, it twisted and spun around, it eventually formed into a phone, nothing fancy, just a slim phone. Zatanna quickly dialed a number and put the phone to her ear.
"Thank god you picked up!" Zatanna grinned, she fell silent as she listened.
"Please, don't panic, you sound like an amateur. I am officially in the Birds of Prey and I am trying my best to get close to---"
Zatanna was cut off, her expression slowly changed, she fell silent again, listening. She rolled her eyes and spoke once again.
"I only said that to the Atom, so she would fall for my act, jesus what do you think I am? I know we are mercenaries, but I'm taking this to the next level here, I fought with bloody Batman, I know how to do these things, trust me, there's no going back now" Zatanna smirked, she closed the phone and looked around at the dark streets of Gotham. She made sure no one was looking.

A cloud of smoke twirls round in the empty seat, soon fading away to reveal Zatanna.
"I'm so sorry about that, I needed to visit my Mother"
Zatanna smiled, no one listened or cared apart from the Atom, who nodded gently and cracked a small smile. The car suddenly sped up, Zatanna hanged onto the front seat, the Atom wobbled, she floated onto Zatanna's palm, Zatanna clutched the Atom. The door suddenly flew open. Huntress held onto Batgirl. Suddenly, Batgirl flipped over Huntress and flew out the car.
"BATGIRL!"
"ZINDA STOP!"
Zatanna slowly opened her mouth,
"You go ahead, I'll go back for her, after all I'm the only one who can heal"
And with those words Zatanna disappeared.

A hurt Batgirl lay on the roads helpless, Zatanna watched from the sidelines. She just smiled.
"Help, Zatanna, please, I'm hurt"
Batgirl slowly got up she shivered, lights came from down the road. Zatanna stretched out her arm, no, she wouldn't let Batgirl die. Zatanna's eyes shimmered purple. Batgirl then flew into a small bakers, crashing through the window. Zatanna watched as Batgirl fell unconscious.

As Zatana disappears the Atom shrinks down and follows.

She watches the events unfold.

Something is really wrong here....why fling her into the window she could've just levitated her upward and landed her on the sidewalk gently. That smile too...what have I gotten myself into this time?Better play it cool for now...right now though I'm not exactly sure who to trust.

The Atom floats a safe distance behind Zatana...shrinks down to microscopic size and floats inside her ear and stays there.

Can't afford to shrink too much or there's a good chance I won't be able to return to normal size...and if I touch anything she'll know I'm here just have to float here and play it cool...for now.

Can't... let him... do this...

I'm literally being beaten to death. With every shot I try to take at the man who claims to be me, I find myself countered and pushed closer to the brink of defeat. My assailant calls himself 'Devilman', wearing a costume nearly identical to mine and speaking in my voice. Wearing my face. Using my fighting styles with much more brutality. It's all like something out of a dream, but every hit I substain assures me that it's real. The pain. The confusion. The indignity. It's all there.

But this man cannot be me. I've trained myself for the intent of bringing justice to those who would prey upon innocent people. He's trained himself for one intent alone: To kill. And by all accounts, he's particularly skilled at it.

I cough up a wad of blood, after he throws me across the drenched concrete. He doesn't even try to fight. He's intentionally weakening me with considerable results. "What was it, again? 'Criminals are a superstitious and cowardly lot'?"

He leaps at me, as I look up, and slides into a kick that nearly breaks my nose apart. I don't even grunt. I've felt so much pain, at this point, that it's all so relative.

"I used to be like you, Bruce.", He tells me, grabbing me and pinning me against the alley's wall. "I trained myself to uphold the law. But if you had lived long enough, you'd have realized that it wasn't enough."

Even in my incredibly weakened state, I manage to kick him in the stomach. Hard. But he simply smiles, refusing to release his grip on me.

"Criminals? They'll never learn. No amount of institution or intimidation will change their ways. They'll continue to mock society's laws, and feed on the weak like animals. They have to be silenced forever. Every last one of them need to be put down."

I grit my teeth. "Y-You're wrong."

"No. You're weak."

He throws me back, spins, and elbows me in the back of my neck. I go down again, hurting even more than I could imagine from a hit like that.

"I know your train of thought. You still think there's that slim chance of hope that everyone in this world has the capacity for both good and evil.", He continues. "Let me save you the trouble... there is no capacity. There is no rehabilitation. Once you choose your path, there is no coming back. Not for the man who killed our parents, not for the corrupt, and certainly not for the criminals in this city."

He continues talking. But I don't listen. Instead, I seize the opportunity and grab a nearby shard of glass, leftover from when he slammed my back into a window.

"I had to make my choice too, Bruce. And I realized that it was pointless to deny myself the full potential of my abilities. If the criminals of this city wanted to continue their ways, so be it. But they were going to have to survive, first. They were going to have the earn the right to justify their pathetic-... ARRGH!"

I stab him in the knee, and push as hard as I can. He may have my train of thought, or even my concentration, but his passion and his rage are unavoidable. They're distractions. It's why I've always steered clear of the path that he's described for himself... once the desire for murder sets in, it consumes you.

Getting to my feet, I leap and dropkick him in the face, as he tries to pry the glass from his blood ridden flesh. It's the first actual hit I've managed to place on him that wasn't blocked by armor. But I know that I can't run. I can't allow this madman to continue to walk the streets a free man. He's going to kill someone.

And I know that he's capable of it.

Quickly, I go for his cowl, and try to rip it off. But the instant my fingers touch the fabric, it sparks, causing me to retract. The technology is similar to my own security measures. Except from the look of it, his is far more lethal.

"Please. You should know better than that."

He uppercuts me and sends me back to the ground.

"Underneath this mask lies exactly what I've been telling you. The face is your's. But Bruce Wayne, the one that I once was, is dead. Both to me and to the rest of the world."

So that's why I got those looks from the police. He's fooled them into believing that I'm dead, while he's free to live as this... monster. He's intricately planned for every calculation, every eventuality that could come his way. Just like I have.

Just like me.

"You're beginning to get it, aren't you? Your arrival here was no coincidence. You needed to be told, to be enlightened. With my help."

I look up at him, as he holds out his hand. "Gotham doesn't have to be run by me alone. We can both control it. We can teach the vermin of this city that they must die. If you'll join me, we can have our revenge upon all of them."

I stare at him, appauled. "You're out of your mind."

With a sweep kick, I down him for enough of an instant to gain leverage. "You think that what I do is for revenge? You may have lost your parents, but it's clear that you don't remember them well."

I go in for a jab. He grabs me, but I see it coming. I grab and twist, making his arm crack, forcing him to submit.

"They would have been ashamed. The last thing they would have wanted to see was for me to become what you have. I fight to instill fear as an example. You're just perverting it to sustain an appetite for murder."

Surprisingly, he manages to slip out of the hold I place him in, and spin, backhanding me across the face.

"And what justifies you, Bruce? Putting those criminals away in jail. In Arkham. Look at where that's gotten you.", He continues, slamming into me with his shoulder. "I've been told about your world. I've seen what your Gotham has become. And it sickens me to know that you could be so weak. You allow those criminals free reign, letting them kill as many as they can before you round them up for the same routine!"

He viciously decks into me, over and over.

BatmanTemp.jpg

"You're the shame of us! Our father taught us to act for the good of the people! But you're standing by and allowing them to be picked off, one at a time!"

I try to fight back, but I'm getting weaker. He's just too vicious. And by comparison, I'm too inhibited to take him down.

"I should kill you right here, and right now. Your very existence makes my skin crawl. And it's not as if it wouldn't be easy, Bruce.", He growls, lining up a punch to my abdominal. "Like your city, you're not even protected!"

His hand cracks as it lands. He writhes in pain. And I sneer, spitting out more blood. "Please. You should know better than that."

I stomp into his knee, pushing the exposed glass from his wound even deeper. At most, he'll sustain muscle damage. But I want to do more. I want to make sure he never walks again. There's only the matter of whether he'll give me the chance...

Lunging at him, I expect him to be preoccupied with his hand longer than he is. But he surprises me, spinning and connecting with a sharp headbut. My nose finally breaks, as I stumble back, my reflexes beginning to suffer from the loss of blood.

UltBatmanLogo.jpg

"If you're not going to listen to me, then I'm just going to have to show you."

I can't even react, before he's tossing what looks to be flash bombs towards my direction. I cover my eyes, desperately preparing myself for what's next. But to my surprise... there is no flash. There's only gas. Caught off guard, I accidentally breathe it in, as he stands over me, smiling through bloodied teeth. Can't even hear what he's saying, as my vision begins to fade.

"Wha - - id y - u e - pect, Bru - -? F - - sh bo - - s?"

And the darkness greets me once again, leaving me at his mercy.

The mercy of The Devil.

"I'm not known to be the most patient of guys, so this leaves us with a choice. Do we go to Metropolis, or New Gotham City? It also begs the question... We're all here, so where is Batman?"
"If we're going to find Batman, we should start with the obvious and begin the search in Gotham." Looking around at the rest of the group, Clark continued, "When we get there, the Flash and I can try to search the city at high speed while J'onn can attempt to find Batman with a psychic sweep. Thoughts?"

"It's a good plan," I say after considering the tactical situation. "Green Lantern and I should take a skyward point to watch for outside threats. There's no telling what other surprises this world holds in store for us."

I look at my newfound compatriots, and am still impressed at what I see. Between the five of us, we truly could do some good on this world, and perhaps steer the course of our own...but that is a dangerous line of thought. This alternate Earth has shown me what our powers can do if used for fascist means.

But if we could keep each other in check, and use our powers for good...

"We need to get moving," I say, my mind made up. "Every second we waste now is a second Batman could be in danger, and a second added on to Despero's reign."

"I agree. I'll try to see if I can locate him with my ring, and check the skies while I'm at it. A guy dressed up like a bat shouldn't be too hard to spot. Let's get to it." Hal said as his power ring glowed ever brightly. He awaited the responses from ther others in his group before he took to the air, despite him knowing that they didn't have much time to waste.
