The Ultimate Universe - Obsolete?

To the extent which that article had a legitimate point, that point can be summarized as:

"Don't let Warren Ellis write Ultimate Marvel comics."

As it goes, I tend to agree.

I like Venom be he 616 or Ultimate... Mind you I like 616 Eddie Brock venom better than any of the current stuff (of course, thanks to the movie coming out Eddie's getting his suit back). Ultimate venom isn't 'that' bad a character, he's different and no ones seen him since Vol. 6... I'm a bit behind on USM so I may be a bit wrong there.

ultimates = great
usm = good
uxm = slowly improving
uff = :(

I like the art from UFF, from Vol.6 anyway. I havent got around to picking up anything from beyond there. I just wish they'd push out Ultimates faster...

Dread what you wrote was a far far far far far more sensible and intelligent critique of the ultimate universe than the article that started this discussion.

Liked it.

:)

Thanks. :word:

The Ultimate Universe is wrong. Distracting for one thing. Why do you need an Ultimate X-men when the original X-men still work, albeit confusing to many. That's part of it's charm. If you're not going to do it right the first time, don't do it. Captain America is dead, yet you have an ultimate Captain America of the same name. So, why bother? Not to mention I get tired of saying ultimate and hearing ultimate in the title of the books. Ultimate! Why have an Ultimate James Howlett, when you got the original Logan, which isn't even himself anymore.

Ok, Spider-man books are terrible now. So, how can the Ultimate Spider-man not be better? Civil War was also very disapointing. Are the Ultimate books distracting? Yeah, Millar worked (?) on Ultimates, too.

???

UFF is pretty terrible. It started off great but ever since the last storyarch. blah!
I don't read UXM so I can't comment on that. Ultimates is always good when it comes out once every two years. And I'm still a big fan of USM, it's consistent and fun. I've been reading comics for 20-something years. Compared to the 616U, I prefer the Ultimate line. (But I agree, it is still a terrible name "Ultimate"

Ultimate Spidey and Ultimate FF are the only ones I enjoy.

Ulimates is great but doesn't come out when it should and Ultimate X-Men is full of self obsorbed brats that I'm really starting to hate.

Then again lately the inconsistancy of Ultimate FF is really starting to get to me.

To tell the truth I wouldn't mind if it was just Ultimate Spider-Man. Thats what happened with MC2. The Spider stands alone.

Sadly, you're correct....Ultimate Venom has not been seen since Volume 6.

Yeah, every other villian has made at least two more appearances, except Venom.

Plus they tease you....several times, Venom has been shown in a flashback.
-In USM 100 when Richard is talking about the suit
-In Volume 11 when Carnage was sifting through Peter's memories
-In one issue where Peter worries about MJ being hurt by his villains and Venom is one of the ones shown attacking her

If you're not going to bring him back, fine, but don't mess with our heads.

venom had a large role in the usm video game which is loosely in continuity

Bendis, likes lot alot of writers hates both Venom and Carnage [well he really hates Carnage]. You should be lucky Venom popped up at all in Ultimate spider-man at all.

Yes, and I loved the game...but it's no substitute for the comic. Besides which, like you said, it's "loosely in continuity."

Well if he hates Carnage more than Venom, why did he have no problem bringing Carnage back in the Clone Saga? Not to mention that he even left it open for ANOTHER Carnage return by having Carnage be contained by SHIELD with Fury telling his men to get to work.

Besides which, since it's the Ultimate Universe, he can simply tweak Venom/Carnage to suit his tastes more. I'm sure a lot of people can agree that Venom needs a re-vamping.

For instance, the appeal, to me, of Ultimate Spider-Man is a young teen superhero with a lot of power and a lot of psychological craziness going on. There's little in 616 that can offer that to me... and if there is that there, they AREN'T Spider-Man, but some lesser important character. With Ultimate I can see this teen who is so important in everything that seems to go on.

The appeal of Ultimates was very much "REAL" superheroes, in the vein of Authority or Squadron Supreme or what have you. There's nowhere in 616 you can go without having to accept abject absurdity like mythical gods are real, unstable molecules abound, and people never die without clones on hand to replace them.

I could understand that,some views need to be seen in a new light or for younger readers who do not want to bother with reading the history of the 616 Universe.But i think Civil War,no matter how bad it was..brought attention to the 616 Universe.Which is needed,one way or another.

But as for a comic line itself, it's purpose has been accomplished in a way but it still sells, so it remains. And it still has the potential for solid stories, just at the moment the wells seem drier than they used to be.

That`s a good point,but the Ultimates is nothing new.Simply a re-telling of 616 in a modern method,i know you know this.As i dont think the re-telling of stories fans already know can go on forever.With that concept,the Ultimate Universe will end..i just wonder when.

Doubtful. The Ultimate universe has strayed quite far from it's original concept. They're not retelling stories anymore but coming up with their very own. Their very own characters and even new characterizations of old characters. This is not Heroes Reborn. Ultimate has become it's very own living, breathing thing...Not literally of course.

I say nay, for his second run in UFF. Anything that has The Thing knocking out a dinosaur is awesome in my book. :up:

I somehow doubt it'll actually be ended. The comics are still selling well, and we know Marvel shamelessly serves the almighty dollar.

I wouldn't be surprised if it is the end. Marvel's got a lot of talent invested in those books, and they don't sell near what they would if they were standard 616.

Hmm, that is likely true. Of course, they could be "ending" the Ultimate universe by merging it with the 616 universe somehow.

Maybe they'll destory this universe, but make a way so where a few of the ultimate characters cross over into the 616 universe. DC style.

The fear still haunts me.

Given how little I like what DC's doing with its Multiverse at the moment, that would be a truly terrible idea for Marvel to steal.

Yeah, pretty much.

Although it could have been cool if the characters were actually different. Not just basically younger/with some balls. Like how Alan Scott was completely different from the Green Lantern Corps, and his powers are even different.

Marvel should of done that with some of the heroes, instead of just making them all teenagers again basically.
