The "World of Heroes" DC RPG Season III

"I don't beleive it!"

I look behind be.

Blue Beetle.

Wonderful.

"The Question, scourge of Hub City's underworld, faceless avenger of justice, is none other than Vic Sage, the famous (and slightly infamous) reporter for K.B.E.L. news! Ha!"

"Hello, Ted."

He sits next to me on the ledge.

"Then again, it's not too much of a surprise. I mean, you're both cynical opiniated bastards. I dunno. Vic seems to have more social skills, so mabey that's why I disn't see the connection. I mean, it's not like Vic has particularly good social skills, but they're better than The Question's."

"Would you please stop talking to me like I'm not me?"

"Sorry."

"So, how is it that you're not unified?"

"Oh, I could tell you stories of ancient cults and Deadman spirits."

"You're joking."

"Obviously. Basically, I followed some of the zombies, nearky got killed, and spent the rest of the day hovering over the city in The Bug. You?"

"I was with Batman when it started. Tagged along with the League."

"Really?"

"Yes."

"So, we know what the deal is with all the zombies?"

"Borg wannabe invading Earth."

"Figures. They got a plan?"

"Superman's building some machine that will scramble the mind control frequency."

"Why didn't they call me? I mean, I'm an inventor."

"Because no one likes you."

"Who doesn't like me?!"

"I don't like you."

"You don't like anyone."

"No, that's Batman. I just don't like you."

"Fine. Whatever."

He stands up and walks towards the rope leading up to The Bug.

"Did you patrol the projects?"

He turns back.

"Yeah. Nasty part of town."

"I know. I grew up there."

"Really? Man, that must've been rough."

"Like you would know, rich boy."

"I'm not that rich."

"You ride around in a giant metal beetle that defies gravity."

".....whatever. Anyway, want a ride home?"

"I'll just stay here for a while."

"Fine. But when you do get home, I suggest taking a shower. 'Bye."

He grabs onto the rope and raises up into The Bug. As he does, I can hear him mutter to himself.

"Heh. Vic Sage."

I watch him enter The Bug and fly off.

Good lord that man gets on my nerves.

Oh thats just god damn irritating!

I might not have any powers, but these guys just ignore me?

ME?!

I'm Guy F$%*ING Gardner!

Well thats just it. Let's see if I can make one of those transporter things work.

It's only Kryptonian Tech... it's not like i'm trying to program a vcr or anything.

I walk over to the transporter, between the people that are ignoring me.

Screw it. Screw them.

I'm gonna get to New York, looks like it's up to me to do.

OOC: As much as I hate to do it for something this major, I'm gonna bunny Wally here. Things are being held up too much.

IC: The Parasite watched as the third man to call himself the Flash, Wally West, sped into view. "I'm here, Parasite. Are you ready?"

Rudy looked grimly at the Flash for a moment before replying. "Let's do it."

The two speedsters were on the modified treadmill instantly. Rudy activated the controls and input the proper settings for the task they wished to accomplish. As the cosmic treadmill hummed to life, the Parasite and the Flash began running, creating sparks of speed force energy snapping around them.

"This is it!" Jones called over the noise of the treadmill. He reached down to a button on the panel labelled "Initiate" and pushed it without hesitation.

The wave of energy spread like a ripple in the water, passing through the dimensional barriers of the tesseract and engulphing whole countries as it flowed over the planet.

"Keep it up Wally! We're almost done!"

All over the world, minds were being set free. They returned to their families and friends. And they cried. They had experienced absolute bliss. The tranquility they had felt, the happiness in their hearts. And now, that happiness was gone. Nothing could ever come close to replacing that joy.

Suddenly, the energy wave subsided. It was done.

"Oy."

I looked around me after the two were finished. I made a mental check of myself...didn't feel any different.

"...So, did it work?"

"I... don't know." Rudy hopped off of the treadmill and shrugged his large shoulders. "I suppose someone can teleport back ta some city or another to check things out. Any volunteers?"

"It worked," I confirmed, "I can hear them."

I speak up, letting my voice reach all within earshot, as well as patching into the JLA communication frequency.

"The Unity's hold over the world has been broken, but our work is still not finished. The Unity is still around, and the world remains in chaos. As far as we know this has caused a collapse of the global economy, and political systems are left in shambles. We still have a long way to go, but with teamwork and perserverance, we can get the world back on it's feet. It is our duty to do so."

The Red X said:
X he darted from one piece to another as the ledge under him began to break. As he reached the last part he jumped in the air and fired a fiery of x-blades at Slade.

Deathstroke unsheathed his sword from his back and sliced each projectile precisely down the middle. "Come on kid, show me something new."

He rushed him head on tackling Red X to the ground, using the momentum to toss Red X against the wall of ice in front of them.

"I can help, I know I can. What do you need me to do?"

As I look down at the streets below, I see something moving.

People.

They're not behaiving like the Unity drones.

They're.....normal.

Look's like Superman's machine worked.

I get up, walk over towards the fire escape, and climb down.

*******

It's so strange.

Everyone looks as if they've woken from a deep sleep. Dazed. Confused. And almost.....sad. Like the man who had everything he ever wanted, just to wake up and realize it was all a dream. It's eerie.

I walk to my apartment building. I go in through the door, and see the man at the front desk, Larry, standing there looking somewhat confused.

"Hi Larry."

".....oh, hello Mr. Sage."

"Are you alright?"

".....I don't.....I....I just had the strangest....was it a dream? It didn't.....I.....I'm sorry Mr. Sage. I'm not feeling too good right now. I...I need to sit down."

"Alright. Feel better."

"I....I'll try."

I walk up the stairs. I get to my apartment, unlock the door, and walk in. I disrobe, grab a towel, step into the bathroom, turn the shower on, and step in.

Larry didn't seem to be doing so good. Being unified was supposed to make you feel great. I suppose getting ununified so abruptly would do the opposite. This worries me.

I step out of the shower and dry off. I head to the closet, grab some clothes, get dressed, and then pick up the phone.

I have to see is Tot is alright. I dial the number.

"...hello?"

"Tot?"

"Charlie? Hello. I...I haven't..."

"Are you alright."

"I...I'm fine. I'm just feeling a little...depressed, I suppose. I had had this strange dream. It was...."

"I have a feeling you're not alone."

"What?"

"Nevermind. I'm going to hit the streets for a bit. How about tomorrow, you and I go out for lunch. You can critisize me for all of my deeply rooted psychological issues. That always makes you feel better."

"Alright. I'll see you tomorrow. Say around one?"

"Sure thing. 'Bye."

I hang up. Tot seems okay. Hopefully, he'll forget all about this, or write it off as a weird dream or illness. That's what any sane person would do.

I go into my closet, open up the hidden drawer, and find some extra gas canisters. I fix them to me belt, put the mask on my face, and release the gass.

The planet has just been freed from a hive mind. The ultimate force of order has been crushed. So, naturally, chaos will insue. The looters are probably taking advatage of the confusion already.

"Time to go to work."

I feel like a loser. I couldn't say it to Vic’s face (well, maybe his LACK of a face…) but I do. I have all these gadgets and money, and yet all I can do is sit around and bust a few petty thieves while everyone else is off banging heads I get beat up by some psycho zombies and hide in the bug like some little kid. How can someone like Vic make such a difference with none of the resources I have? I just don’t get it.

So, I try to sound cocky and smart in front of Vic with my stupid jokes. I always make such dumb wisecracks because I don’t know what else to do in front of people who do so much more for the world than a joker like me.

They all thing I’m just some rich comedian without a care in the world. I wonder what they’d do if

I look down at the streets from the Bug. Looks like some young punk’s beating up on some old man. I could stop the thug with my BB gun, but for some reason I leap out of the Bug and I hit him instead. Someone in the same biz as me once said that hitting helps relieve tension. He’s wrong. Even before my knuckles collide with his jaw, I feel worse than ever.

"I'd help with taking down Unity. But Gotham is going to be in shambles, and I have to go to work."

Imra gasped as the air vacumed around her as Zoom circled the room. Her hair whipped up over her head like yellow flames.
She stood up determined.

“What had he said earlier?

" I tried to help you! I helped you fight the Unity, and you thanked me by knocking me unconscious! I was on your side! You don't deserve your life anymore than I deserve mine! I want you to die!”

Anymore than I deserve mine…”

She closed her eyes allowing herself sanctuary within her own mind. Her mentor Aven had taught her how to meditate within herslef and now she needed to, to gain strength. She made her mind go blank and then slowly allowed things to seep in sifting through them for what she wanted.
Zoom.
His mind buzzed into hers like a hive of bees, disrupting the silence and vibrating in her skull. She sifted through the movement and noise, touching his mind before gently pressing the node for his motor skills. Slowing him down she waited until she felt him stop moving before opening her eyes.
She opened them to see him fall to his nees, walking towards him slowly and in pain she placed her hand on his head.

***I’m sorry***

She closed her eyes and let herself drift into his mind.

Evil lay all around, however she hung onto the glimpse she’d seen earlier…

anymore than I deserve mine!

Imra turned, seeing a man standing behind her.

Hunter?

It worked.

I'm in New York.

Kryptonian technology is easyier than most other tech's in the universe to operate.

Well i've always found it to be anyway.

I look around the bar.

I go to the back room and reach under the desk.

I lift up my power battery.

I look to my hand...

"What the?!"

The ring is disolving... it's sort of merging into my flesh, being re-absorbed into my body.

"That's screwed up!"

Suddenly I feel it... The Unity are gone.

We won.

And I did jack to help.

Not because I didn't want to.

But because I was weak.

Powerless.

I shudder.

I punch my fist into the opening of the battery.

I feel a surge in my arm, but nothing comes of it.

I look to the ground.

Is this it for Guy Gardner...

In my office at KordCo, I decide to pump a little iron before going down to work. I've been sick lately and haven't exactly been the great fighter I used to be. I need to work off more than a few pounds Suddenly, I hear my phone ringing. Judging by the voice, it's one of my employees. A sectary I believe. "Sue's" her name if I remember correctly.

"Hey there," I say smiling as I shake her hand. "What's up?"

"Mr. Kord, after the Unity crisis, the world's economy has been devastated. All of the major businesses in America are going in a financial crisis. A meeting has been purposed to try and sort things out."

"So we're taking heavy hitters here?" I reply shocked "like Wayne Enterprises and LexCorp?"

"Yes sir."

Wow, what the hell would they want with us? I think. My business has never exactly been the most successful company in the world. I shrug, no matter.

"When is this?"

"In about half an hour sir."

"Wow, not exactly alot of prep time."

"Forgive me for being blunt sir, but the world hasn't exactly had alot of prep time for this crisis."

"Alright, what's the address?"

I jot it down quickly.

"OK, so is that everything?"

"Yes sir."

"Thanks Sue!"

"It's Timmy!" He says with poison burning in his words!

"Uh...sorry Tim! Thanks!"

I quickly hang up and dash off to get ready for the meeting.

Leaving the others to their own devices, I use the Legion ring and fly out of the Tesseract.

For a second, I think if I'm using this thing too much. Who knows if this thing is operated by batteries or something and could die at any minute.

I shake the thought as I saw a strange sight in the snow. Two figures...fighting... I swoop down lower and I see that it is Deathstroke and Red X. I'm in a position to take down both at the same time.

I swoop over them and then hover above them.

"A border-line senile assassin and a prepubesent boy fighting in the middle of the artic. And people call me crazy. Both of you surrender. NOW."

I walk through the alleyways of the city. I've already stoped two muggings and I'm almost certain that's not going to be all for tonight. Suddenly, I hear a scream, and imediately start looking for the source.

After a few moments, I find a young man holding a gun up to a young couple and their child. The man is shaking and looks like he's out of his mind.

"J...just give m..me you're cash!"

"Listen, buddy, let's not...."

"GIVE ME THE ****ING MONEY!!!!!!"

"Now, what do we have here?"

I step towards them. The man with the gun instantly points it at me.

"WHAT THE **** ARE YOU?!?!?!"

"Put the gun down."

"YOU DON'T HAVE A ****ING FACE!!!! WHAT THE...."

"What's your name?"

"W...what?!"

"What is your name?"

"M...my...I'm Joe."

"Hello, Joe. Why are you doing this?"

"What? Why the **** do you want to know?"

"You're not right, Joe. Something's gone wrong. You're not acting rationally. Anyone with eyes can see that. Why are you doing this?"

Suddenly, the man who Joe had perviously been pointing the gun at speaks.

"Excuse me, but...."

"Shut up. I'm not talking to you. I'm talking to Joe here. So, Joe, why are you doing this?"

"I....I....I felt good. I felt real good. I haven't...things haven't always been so good for me. Ever since high school, I've made alot of bad choices. But then, I felt good. I don't know what happened. It's just suddenly, I felt better than I ever have. Everything was fine. It wasn't a dream. But it wasn't real either. I...I can't explain it at all. I...then it stopped. That feeling stopped. Everything was back to the way it was. It all felt....normal."

"So you think robbing these people would make it better?"

"I...I....it's the only thing....I just.....I don't know what else to do."

"Joe, this isn't going to make things better for you. Chances are, it's going to make things much worse. You and I both know this, don't we Joe?"

"Y...yeah."

"Do you have any family, Joe?"

"Yes. My brother."

"Where does he live, Joe?"

"Chicago."

"Alright. Joe, Christmas is coming up. Why don't you put down the gun, buy a bus ticket, get on a bus, and go see your brother? Because, really, that would probably make you feel alot better than robbing these people."

He stares at me for a few minutes, still pointing the gun at me. Finally, he drops the gun. I reach into my pocket and pull out a role of tens. I hand it to him.

"Joe, this should be enough to get you to Chicago."

"Th...thanks."

"Don't mention it."

Joe turns to the family he had been mugging mere moments before.

"Uhhh, sorry about, you know, pointing a gun at you."

They stare at him. The woman barely mutters:

"....it's fine."

Joe walks out of the alley. I begin to walk in the opposite direction. Suddenly, I hear the couple's son call after me.

"Who are you mister?"

I turn back to the kid.

"Who am I? Good question."

I walk away, leaving the family standing in the middle of the grimy allwy, horribly confused and mabey just a little bit grateful.

"Hal, do what you can. I need to talk with Parasite."

I leave the teleporter room and soon find Rudy, with the treadmill and Wally, both look exhausted.

"Wally, could you excuse us?"

He nods, and leaves the room. I wonder how well his powers are returning, or if they are at all... No time for that now, there's still one more thing to deal with before this is over.

"Now that the Unity's grasp over the world is broken, how do we shut it down for good?"

"Clark... I'll handle it. Personally. Unity's stolen my mind from me. It's been playing you, me, Lex, hell, the whole damn world for puppets and I'll make it pay with my own bare hands."

Rudy looked down at his clawed hands and wondered if he was really ready for what he was thinking about doing. "These hands have killed countless people, Clark. Do you think they're even capable of saving anyone at all?"

"I believe everyone has it in them to do both good and evil, and I have faith that if you use your abilities for the good of others, you can be as much a hero as I can." I place my hand on his shoulder, showing my trust, "I've fought you time and time again, and I know more than anyone that the Unity is going to be sore in the morning."

Raymond Jones sighed. He wasn't exactly sure if he would survive what he was planning to do, but he knew that he had to show someone else the proverbial light that he had seen.

He looked at Kent for a long time before finally saying his farewell. "Say 'hi' to Lois for me, will ya Clark? She... she's an alright gal. I think I finally understand." Rudy paused. "You're one lucky sonovagun, ya know that Kent?"

Rudy took Superman's hand off of his shoulder, walking away from Kent and towards the dimensional gateway of the tesseract, looking out into the snow, at the kid who he only knew as Red X fighting the one person in the world who was the closest thing Jones had to a friend. Slade and he had been teammates together in Luthor's Injustice Society and had brought the JLA to its knees. And just recently, they had been working together again for the Unity. But the Unity's time was over now.

As he was contemplating the status of his life and those around him, Parasite saw Batman flying towards the two combatants and telling them to stop their fight. Normally Rudy wouldn't have given a rat's ass if they'd killed each other or not, but he was in the middle of an epiphany, and who was he to argue with his feelings? 'Pheh. Probably have a little too much of Kent's thoughts floatin' around in my noggin, making me feel all warm 'n fuzzy like this,' Rudy thought. What the hell, he shrugged.

Before another word could be spoken by anyone at the scene, the Parasite had sped to their location and placed his heavy hand down on Wilson's shoulder, trying to ease him back from his defensive fighting stance he had taken against Red X. "Wayne's right, Slade," he said quietly. "Unity's finished.

"Go home to your daughter. I think Rose could probably use your company right about now."

The Red X said:
X smashed into the hard ice, it hurt but he didn't’t want to show weakness. The blades on the back of his hands began to spin furiously. He charged at Deathstroke with both blades aimed forward.

Deathstroke played chicken letting the kid come at him. He waited till he was in striking distance and side stepped the charging adolescence. Red X's blade nicked Slade's shoulder at the last second, catching him off guard. He turned back at X who had ran past him, "Now you did it punk, I'm gonna f!@# you up!"

Slade ran at him and threw a hard right cross at Red X's jaw.

Before landing on the ground, X fired his grapple gun. Slade dodged it easily, by only lifting his arm. The grapple gun’s blade deflected off the rocks behind Deathstroke shooting back towards X. X grabbed the blade pulling Slade toward him with the cable. He then kicked him against the mountains sharp rocks.
