Now that the end of the season is slowly approaching, I wanted us to start a discussion about how we move forward in the next game continuity-wise.
I've talked to some of you as the season has progressed about your thoughts on what we should do. With all of your feedback and ideas, I've come up with a few options.
Option 1: Post Flashpoint/New DCU Continuity
Now, this one would be the most simplest. The comics are changing their continuity, and we could just as easily fall in line with them and then branch out and tell our own stories within the new DCU. Now, some of the changes in the new DCU don't sit well with fans, myself included. But we still won't have a full scope on how the post relaunch DCU will look until next month, or possibly the month after that.
Option 2: Post Brightest Day/Pre Flashpoint Continuity
This was originally going to be the jumping off for point for the new RPG when a WoH relaunch was announced, back during the early stages of Brightest Day. This would still serve as a good jumping off point for many characters, but some people have said it may not be the best place to take the RPG if we're trying to attract new blood, and an RPG based on the new DCU may be better for doing that.
Option 3: User Created Continuity
Now, this one would be trickier to swing. Upon me telling them the option, they would instantly retort "It's like Ultimate DC!" without giving me time to explain it.
The idea is that we make our own continuity, but not without some ground rules. First off, the RPG would start at least ten years after the start of the superhero age, and your character continuity would still have to have stuff from the comics. Like, say you didn't want Batman to go through Knightfall, that would be fine....but there would have to be a basic blueprint regarding the characters. Superman still has to be from Krypton, Batman's parents were murdered in front of him when he was a child and he lost a sidekick so many years ago, Wonder Woman is tied to the long lost race of the Amazons, and so on. Like, after ten years, the Justice League would have long been established and went through more than a few roster changes.
As important as posting samples are in apps, the important part in this one would be continuity and history. You would have to have an incredibly detailed and thought out continuity on the character's past. That has downsides in and of itself.
Option 4: Mix Options 1 and 3
Okay, you like the new DCU for the most part....but, you don't like that there's no JSA, or the fact that Barry Allen is still alive and Wally West is nowhere to be seen, or that all the superheroes are only supposed to be around for five years at the point.
In that case, you change it up and make them be part of this new DCU. This option mixes one and three and gives us a kind of patchwork continuity, where we use the new continuity of the relaunch as a guide, while picking and choosing what to add and what to throw out. This would have to be a big collaboration from everyone, and I think maybe this one would be one of the better options if we chose it.
Keep in mind, this is just a discussion. I want us to start talking about it now as the comics wrap up their final month before the relaunch.
