Well to be fair what killed WCW was they tried to cater to the non-fans too much. I mean bringing in KISS, Megadeth, Tobey Keith, David Arquette, and No Limit Soldiers were just too much. They tried to make it an entertainment show instead of keeping it wrestling based, intelligent storylines, and so forth.

I felt WCW started to hit the bottom when the world title was switching like hot cakes and when Arquette won the championship. Sure, Bischoff wasn't a wrestler, but having a celebrity when the belt devalued the greatness of it and was a slap in the face of the greats who held it. Sting, Flair, Luger, Harley Race, Steamboat, Bret Hart, DDP, Booker T, and so forth made the title important having Arquette win it was just a flap in the face to all of them.

True, however WCW started hitting bottom before random title switches under Russo. The nWo angle had ran stale after 1997. However, Bischoff kept pushing it, expanding it into the black & white and red & black versions of the group. He didn't realize the angle was finished and that something new was needed, particularly in talent at the top.

As for ECW? Heyman's mismanagement with money, no television slot, and not changing its format killed ECW in my opinion. If Heyman had the financial backings or knew how to handle money like Vince? He'd probably still have ECW today as we speak.

Heyman wouldn't be making as much money as Vince though. As you said, he refused to change his format. ECW was aimed toward a niche audience instead of a mainstream one, and that's what one of the large contributors towards the company's fall.

But I won't knock the WWE's product as a whole now. There are certain things I do like about it. I watch wrestling mainly for certain wrestlers now. If I watch RAW I'll watch it for Jericho, Mysterio, Shawn, Kofi, Punk, Santino, Regal, Bourne(whenever he wrestles), Kane, Phoenix, Mickie James, Orton, and Team Priceless.

Smackdown it's Jeff Hardy, MVP, Shelton, Edge, Taker, Kendrick, Kozlov, Show, Kennedy, and Natalya.

So the WWE has some interesting talent and on occasions they churn out great storylines like the brilliant Jericho/HBK feud. But as a fan of wrestling for 20 years I've seen every single phase it's gone through. But I do agree we'll never see a big boom like we did during 1998-2001. In those years it was great to be a wrestling fan in general.

1999-2000 was when I started watching wrestling. Glorious times. Not to say this year hasn't been fun. But when there was competition, Vince was working his butt off.

http://pulsewrestling.com/2008/11/14/ring-of-honor-weekly-38/

This week, we take an admittedly early look on the reported changes in ROH from Gabe Sapolsky being replaced by Adam Pearce, who is heralding in a new era with a new direction.

20 Counts on the Floor - This is the most obvious and visible of ROH’s new ideas and honestly, it feels unnecessary. I understand that ROH wanted to curtail the hardcore and fighting outside the ring, but leaving the option open wasn’t hurting anything and they could merely have had their guys spend less time on the floor without the countout. All this does is add a traditional element to ROH, which isn’t necessarily bad, but takes out something readily identifiable and unique to ROH (in American wrestling) for an idea that certainly won’t put any butts in seats.

New Talent - ROH has been booking a lot of new talent for upcoming shows and doing so regularly. Currently making appearances are (and there is some overlap with Gabe here)- Kenny Omega, Kenny King, Brodie Lee, Sami Callahan, and Sal Rinuaro. This is a great development. Rotating the cast, giving fans more wrestlers to enjoy is an excellent idea. This should also help prevent wrestlers and specific matches from getting stale.

Gimmicks - Gimmicks seem to be more prominent in ROH now. Need proof? Check out “Dirty” Ernie Osiris who wants fans money so he can get decent wrestling gear. Titus and King, both gimmicky pretty boys being pushed, are further proof. These gimmicks lower in the card help the crowd get involved when done well, and while they can be hokey, a hyped crowd that isn’t going to be burned out on great wrestling is likely a good thing.

Feud Speed is Increasing - Kenny King walked out on Kenny Omega in one show. The AOTF breakup of Tyler Black and Jacobs isn’t on slow build as they’re openly fighting and Jacobs is using Delirious as his partner over Black. The SnS vs. Albright and Strong feud is already blowing off, along with Danielson vs. Nigel and Aries vs. Jacobs, both of which have fully played out. Overall, this is going to leave Pearce with a huge blank slate to play with. That can be good, or it could be too much, too quickly and end up disastrous. Time will tell.

Weak Finishes - Over the past weekend of ROH shows, there were 5 matches that had screwjobs booked into them. The first four are: King walking out on Omega, Necro Butcher and Brodie Lee going to a no contest, Tyler and Jacobs vs. King and Titus doing the same, and interference in the finish of Davey vs. Strong. These four are bad, but what really bothers me is that for seven years there was never a schmozz ending for a World Title match… until two weeks into Pearce’s control. Nigel McGuinness lost to Necro Butcher via disqualification. I don’t pay for screwjob finishes and since ROH wants me to pay for every show, all this will do is hurt their business. Straight finishes is one of the ways ROH has always been unique. Changing that is a huge mistake and reeks of lazy booking.

These last two are merely rumored at this point.

Punches over other Strikes - I really hope this isn’t true. Everyone in WWE and TNA uses the same style punches. It’s become so cliché that it rarely draws any response unless particularly well timed. Forearms, kicks, and other strikes are still different enough to draw a reaction and also add a difference for those looking for an alternative to WWE and TNA that’s visual and easy to latch on to. It wasn’t broke, so I really hope this isn’t being fixed.

Increase in Rest Holds - Rest holds are fine so long as they’re worked in. Danielson, easily the best in ROH, spends a great deal of time digging in for simple maneuvers and getting huge pops because he nails all the little things to make them look painful. This is fine. Sitting through a chinlock with no effort is not. That’s just boring. Rest holds can draw great heat, but really must be used carefully, worked hard and kept spaced out otherwise crowds will refuse to wake from their rest.

There you have it, a quick look at the new direction of ROH, at least after the first two shows. Hope you enjoy and check back later for ROH’s Driven coverage, with a potential five star match between Age of the Fall and Steen and Generico.

I can see why the WWE would be interested in Christian Cage, Robert Roode, Hernandez (he's a big guy, but has talent, which should interest WWE and he would probably do well in WWE) and others who are going to be free:

- The WWE is preparing for the day that many of their top guys are going to retire. The age of these guys is staggering:

- David Batista, 39 (40 in January)
- Chris Jericho, 38
- John Bradshaw Layfield, 41 (42 in a few weeks)
- Shawn Michaels, 43
- Rey Mysterio, 33 (34 in a month, but is likely one major injury away from retirement)
- Big Show, 36 (37 in February)
- Edge, 35
- Triple H, 39
- Undertaker, 43
- Kane, 41

How many of those guys will still be wrestling in WWE in five years? One maybe? Two? At the most, two (Edge and Triple H). Big Dave has said he has 2-3 more years left and Michaels has said that he's told the WWE when he's going to retire. It explains why they have an interest in guys like Cage and Roode from TNA (possibly Hernandez too).

Jericho is 38....he does not look it....at all

I think Roode would be an excellent addition to the WWE roster

Hernandez and Roode would be good additions to the WWE roster.

I don't see Jericho retiring for five years if his health allows.

More On The Release Of Armando Estrada
Written by Richard Gray on Nov 19, 2008 - 11:28:49 AM

Armando Estrada's release from WWE was expected as we were told on 11/13 that he was on the list to be cut. Estrada worked the FCW television tapings last Thursday night and again over the weekend for the developmental promotion which made it appear as if his job had been spared. That obviously was not the case as his release was finalized yesterday and an official announcement was made.

We were told that Estrada was over with everyone in WWE management, however, his stock dropped when he stopped looking good in the ring. WWE officials felt that Estrada ran his course as a mouthpiece (he was originally brought in to talk for Umaga, but Umaga eventually got over without him) and wanted to give him a chance as a worker but when his work rate dropped, he was taken off television.

Not only did Matt Hardy suffer a partially torn PCL in his left knee while working overseas, he pulled his groin on his left side, while overcompensating for his knee injury. Hardy wrote in his diary on his MySpace page that he underwent acupuncture where 10 or 12 needles were stuck in his lower abdomen, groin, and inner thigh. Hardy said that it relieved 75% of the pain in his groin.

ouch...groin injuries are not to be ****ed with.....he needs to drop that title and take some time off....

- There is talk of bringing in an international star, possibly from Japan, to face Awesome Kong for the Knockouts Title at the Final Resolution pay-per-view. Kong worked the early part of her career in Japan so they will likely bring in someone from there.

- It looks like the Kurt Angle vs. Jeff Jarrett match will take place at the January pay-per-view. It was originally scheduled for December but they figure the longer it's delayed, the better the story behind the match gets.

- TNA had to edit iMPACT before the Turning Point pay-per-view where Mick Foley did a promo and called the TNA World Title the NWA Title. The crowd in the iMPACT Zone corrected Foley in unison.

- No word from within TNA yet if there are any concrete plans for any of the recently released WWE Superstars. Ken Doane (Dykstra) is at least a name under discussion and they would like to use Super Crazy when his non-compete ends as they've already received indications that he would come in if an offer was made.

- Sting will not be going on the upcoming UK tour in January but most everyone else will with the exception of Booker T. Jeff Jarrett, Mick Foley and Kevin Nash are all booked for the tour.

- The match between Sgt. Slaughter and Pat Patterson that we posted on previously that Kevin Nash and Samoa Joe used for inspiration at Turning Point was the 1981 Alley Fight in Madison Square Garden. Jim Cornette put together the Beer Money vs. MCMG match.

- Sources report that TNA officials, at last word, still don't know which way Christian Cage is going. The feeling is that the angle they have shot with him getting beat down covers them either way. If he doesn't sign a new deal, the angle wrote him off. If he does resign, the angle will allow him to come back and be on the babyface team as one of the leaders.

Christian's name has came up in WWE meetings and he has been offered a deal, but the talk is more of what to do with him if they sign him and not any real concrete plans based on his return being guaranteed. Brian Gewirtz wants Cage on RAW because he enjoys writing for him. Michael Hayes and Edge are pushing for him to be on SmackDown and to put the two back together. The feeling is that he will get a big push coming in but if the initial reaction isn't too good, he will be put on the midcard.

-- WWE held another round of Wellness drug tests before the WWE Raw and ECW taping on Monday night in Atlanta. With the company looking to cut $20 million from their budget, this would be a very bad time for anybody to test positive.

-- Former WWE Creative team member Dave Lagana is currently working with the National Wrestling alliance on their new TV tapings from Hollywood, California. Lagana was added to the NWA's creative side to work on the writing, formatting and timing of the tapings. Former WWE tag team Lance Cade & Trevor Murdoch also worked the show.

-- Speaking of WWE's budget cuts, the company is in the midst of changing their policy on referees. In the past, referees have been assigned to a specific brand. Moving forward, the referee roster will be consolidated, with WWE bringing one group of referees on the road one week, then alternating the following week. WWE will be going by senority, so tenured referees will get priority treatment and younger refs being sent to WWE developmental or possibly being released.

-- As we reported yesterday, "Macho Man" Randy Savage has a speaking role in the new Walt Disney animated film, "Bolt." We've received word that the character Savage plays is called "Thug". No word yet on whether that's the character's name or a generic title, but we'll find out soon as Bolt hits theaters on Friday.

-- It was announced on last night's edition of ECW that Boogeyman would be making his return to the brand on next week's show.

-- In WWE's latest "Where Are They Now?" article, former WWE star Rick Martel is profiled. Martel talks about entering the business, his stint in the AWA, Strike Force, WrestleMania, his blindfold match with Jake Roberts, his time in WCW, his appearance at Vengeance last year, what he's up to now, and more. Regarding WWE, Martel said, "I have such a sense of pride to be able to say I was part of the greatest organization in the world – I wouldn’t have what I have today if it wasn’t for WWE."

-- Paul Heyman has updated his UK Sun blog with his thoughts on Brock Lesnar's UFC Heavyweight title win last weekend. Heyman writes, "Brock Lesnar's greatest strength is not physical. It's a great athlete's mentality and acceptance of instruction." He added, "For all the talk about 'Size does matter' and 'Youth and power prevailed over age and experience,' the secret to Brock's success is his intense drive to be the alpha male, to be number one at what he does, to be dominant against all competition ... and his willingness to simultaneously be humble enough to accept the advice of others that he trusts, listen to their guidance, and implement their game plan." Heyman also talks about the first time he met Brock Lesnar and Vince McMahon's initial reaction to Lesnar's "Next big thing" moniker. You can read Heyman's latest blog entry at this link.

-- Last night's edition of ECW drew a 1.2 cable rating, rounded up from 1.15.

-- DJ Gabriel – the newest member of ECW General Manager Theodore Long's New Superstar Initiative – made his debut on last night's edition of ECW on Sci Fi. With former wedding planner Alicia Fox in his corner, Gabriel defeated Sal Rinauro with the European uppercut, which is apparently his finishing maneuver. Gabriel is Steve Lewington, and was signed to a developmental contract following the spring 2007 European tour in which he wrestled Umaga at the UK Raw taping. WWE signed a handful of European wrestlers following this particular tour including Lewington, Drew McIntyre, Sheamus O'Shaunessy, Hade Vansen, Chris Gray and Tommy Taylor. It looks like Lewington is the first wrestler of the group to actually make it in WWE as McIntyre was quickly sent back to developmental following a handful of matches. Gray & Taylor have since been released, Vansen is M.I.A., and Drew McIntyre & Sheamus are still plying their trade in Florida Championship Wrestling. Lewington also appeared as a jobber on Raw during WWE's two tours of England in 2005. Carlito beat him up during a Cabana segment and he once wrestled Kurt Angle as a jobber.

-- The WWE site has released new photos of Alicia Fox, which were taken during her time as the wedding planner for Edge & Vickie Guerrero's wedding. You can see her photos at the following link. They have yet to put her profile up. Fox was in Florida Championship Wrestling during her three month long hiatus from WWE television.

-- In some interesting news, The Bella Twins are ranked No. 1 in "Today's Top Searches" on the front page of Yahoo.com. Other wrestling personalities to make the list this year include Michelle McCool, Vince McMahon, Randy Orton and Karen Angle. Although, I don't believe any of them were ranked number one. Lilian Garcia also charted the list last year.

-- A video has recently surfaced online of WWE Hall of Famer "Rowdy" Roddy Piper smoking marijuana from a bong in front of a crowd at a party. You can see the video in question at the following link. After smoking pot from the bong, Piper can be heard saying, "Now you're gonna put this on tape for the FBI!" He also added, "That's funny tasting tobacco, man!" In reference to the bong, Piper said, "That's the damndest thing I've ever seen!"

-- As reported a few months ago, a short film starring WWE Hall of Famers Greg "The Hammer" Valentine and George "The Animal" Steele entitled "Somethin' Fishy" is set to be released. The movie will finally premiere on Friday, December 5, 2008 in Orlando, Florida, reports SLAM! Wrestling. The short film will be shown three times during the evening at the Darden Theater in the Orlando Science Center, 777 East Princeton Street, in downtown Orlando. Both Steele and Valentine will be in attendance at the film's premiere. For more information on the film, visit www.somethin-fishy.org.

-- Regarding the recent release of Paul London, he had been in the dog house for quite some time, ever since he smiled during the live shot right before Vince McMahon's explosion angle in June 2007.

London also had a reputation for having no instincts as a performer, as far as how his character should be doing promos, even though everyone knew he has the wrestling ability. After losing the WWE Cruiserweight Championship on the August 4, 2005 edition of Velocity to Nunzio, London was told to deliver a heartfelt promo regarding his title loss. Instead, he did a goofy comedy promo encouraging fans to protest his title loss, which officials frowned upon. It was said that London didn't like SmackDown writer David Lagana's idea, but by not doing what he was told, and doing a bad promo, it really hurt his standing with the company. London soon went on a losing streak before returning as a face and teaming with the newly rehired Brian Kendrick. London also had a rep of being a complainer, which obviously didn't help matters.

London asked for time off from the road on a few occasions. After asking for time off one time, London said he wasn't sure he wanted to commit his life to professional wrestling. He was given the time off and came back looking invigorated, but a mere month later, people felt the same issues were coming back up and that nothing had changed regarding him.

Sometime back, WWE had plans to give London & Kendrick a huge push, but the duo performed poorly in the pre-taped promos given to them, to the point that most of them never made the air.

London also had a relationship with former WWE Diva Ashley Massaro, which was seen as negative by most in the company with one person saying it ruined his standing in the company. London had heat in the locker room as a result of his relationship with Massaro. Approximately two years ago, WWE had plans to do an angle on Kendrick having a crush on Massaro, but it was dropped. They also had plans to do a big break-up angle between London & Kendrick, but those plans were dropped as well. London had a reputation of being a headache to work with among WWE's creative staff. That helps explain why his obvious talents didn't go as far as they could have.

Regarding his future in wrestling, London's continuing his wrestling career as he's currently accepting bookings through an agent. The AAA promotion out of Mexico is said to be interested in his services, and he speaks Spanish, which helps a lot. However, this may not be the right time because a number of the top wrestlers in AAA are pressuring officials to keep foreigners from taking their spots.

-- WWE developmental wrestler Gabe Tuft is doing a surfer gimmick in Florida Championship Wrestling. He's going under the name "Tyler Reiks" in the promotion, which is second name change in recent weeks. He went under the name "Taj Milano" for a few weeks following the company's directive to change a number of FCW wrestlers' ring names. Reiks has an elbow drop called "High tide" and his finishing move is a moonsault is called "The Big Kahuna." Reiks has the kind of size, look and body company officials like, so that helps his cause in being called to the main roster. Tuft was signed to a developmental contract last year out of the UPW wrestling promotion, which has produced the likes of John Cena, Chris Masters, Victoria and Heidenreich.

-- WWE developmental wrestler Lupe Viscara is now going under the name Lupe Santiago. He initially debuted under his real name, then Lupe Martinez. FCW is billing him from Mexico City and he comes out with a Mexican flag. Viscara is 21 years old and was the last wrestler to be signed to a WWE developmental contract (alongside Andrew Vein, who has been inactive for quite some time) out of the Ohio Valley Wrestling school.

Last week, two names surfaced regarding the wrestlers most likely to be cut from World Wrestling Entertainment. The names that came up were Armando Estrada and Deuce.

Estrada's release was finalized by the company this past Tuesday. Thus far, Deuce has evaded the chopping block, but his future in WWE definitely appears grim as his name came up on being let go by the company alongside Estrada's. It's pretty much only a matter of time before WWE parts ways with Deuce as well.

More releases are expected to be announced as WWE continues to cut costs, so stay tuned.

-- Regarding WWE's recent crackdown of marijuana use, this has frustrated a number of wrestlers. Some are telling friends they will continue to smoke pot in spite of the crackdown. Others predict those recently approached by management regarding their habit will replace it with alcohol. As noted earlier, one wrestler in particular has failed for pot 12 times, with his push leveling off as a result. As reported earlier, the wrestler in question is Brian Kendrick.

What an idiot, I remember suggesting him as the one with the slowed push, I didn't peg him for 12 time stopped push guy.

Hopefully he'll clean up. Kendrick's one of the bright parts of Smackdown and wrestling as a whole right now.

-- Lena Yada has issued a statement regarding her recent release from World Wrestling Entertainment. As it turns out, she was in the hospital visiting her sick father when she was informed of her dismissal from the company two Mondays ago. The WWE site a did a story on her father this past year, who is currently suffering from sarcoidosis, an immune system disorder that manifests as a restrictive disease in the lungs. Her father was sick this time a year ago as well, and almost prevented her from accepting WWE's contract offer because she'd have to go on the road. Yada admits to seeing her release from the company coming. It's still up in the air whether she'll continue her career in professional wrestling. Yada posted the message at the www.Unique-Divas.com forum. Yada registered on the site when she was involved in the Diva Search contest last year, and would occasionally post during her time in WWE. Here is her message in its entirety:

So I guess its time i made a statement :-)

I got a call monday morning when i was at the hospital with dad. Kinda knew it was coming to be honest. Am I sad? Yes. Will I move on? Yes. If i will continue to train or seek another outlet is still up in the air.

There are many rumors circulating in the system about the reason for my release. Only Vince himself will know. I've had a very fulfilling time so far with WWE. Could i have gone further? I believe yes. BUT! we all have to remember that it is a business at the end of the day. The door is still open for a possible return in the future though so let's just wait and see shall we? ;-)

When darkness surrounds, it is only opportunity for the light to shine even brighter :-)

Never give up on your dreams. Life is filled with disappointment and will challenge you constantly, but it is what you do in the aftermath that defines you as a person.

Love and Aloha,
Lena

-- Seven-time WWE Women's Champion Trish Stratus now has an account on the WWE Universe site. It's legit as her page is linked at the tail end of the "Superstars Profile" bar on the front page of the WWE Universe site site. You can visit Mrs. Stratus' page at fans.wwe.com/trishstratus.

It was assumed that low rent Hollywood actor Freddy Prinze JR, who was recently signed on as a WWE creative writer for its storylines, would simply act as a consultant and offer his input here and there from a “Hollywood” perspective. But against everyone’s expectations Prinze has rose to the occasion and is quickly becoming a well liked and respected creative writer.

In fact I’m told that he was one of the main forces behind Jeff Hardy’s new attitude, which is perhaps the greatest thing to happen to Hardy in years and could be a sign of more good things to come.

Wrestlers have nothing but good things to say about Prinze JR, saying he is very accessible and receptive to ideas and input, which a lot of other creative team members are not. Its said to be a strange situation where the other writers “suck up” to him because of he’s famous, but he doesn’t abuse this, instead using his power to actually do good by the wrestlers.

This goes to show that fans (he’s said to be a long time fan) can successfully write about wrestling and that it works!

Freddy Prinze currently woks on the Smackdown brand alongside Michael Hayes.

-- WWE.com features an article about former diva Trish Stratus, who left the company over 2 years ago to pursue life outside of the squared circle. You can read the entire piece here (WWE: Inside WWE > News > Trish Stratus - Stratusphere). The article notes that Trish recently completed filming for her reality TV travel show, "Stratusphere," which currently airs in Canada on the Travel + Escape channel on Monday nights at 9:00 p.m. EST.

As for plans to return to the ring, Trish told WWE.com that the door is always open for a return: "I’ve heard that Beth Phoenix and this new Diva Natalya have talked [trash] about me,” says Stratus with a gleam in her penetrating eyes. “I’ve said it before, but if they ever decided to call me out, I wouldn’t hesitate to step into the ring.”

-- Speaking of Trish, she is also up for Canada's Gemini award for "Hottest Canadian Female TV star." The ceremony takes place November 28 and you can vote for Trish now at GeminiAwards.ca.

I thought it was cool that Prinze got a job as a writer, he's a fan and has always been at events when they went through Cali....and he does a lot more behind the camera than in front, I guess a lot of people don't know that so use terms like 'low rent Hollywood actor'
