I got around to watching Okada vs Tanashi at NJPW King of Pro Wrestling from October of last year....Okada and Tanahashi f-cking killed it. At certain parts I was getting scared that Okada would no sell the arm damage but fortunately he didnt and Tanahashi's feigned knee injury was an interesting tactic as well.
I'd love to see Daniel Bryan go at it with either of these two guys but even moreso Hiroshi Tanashi. Dude definitely has a fan in me now.
Was watching some NJPW matches to get my mind off of TNA's bush leagueness tonight lol.
I was actually watching that same match from King of Pro Wrestling just last night! And for as hyped as that match is, I do think it's a little overrated. The one thing about that match that I didn't really like was the fact that after Tanahashi had worked over Okada's arm the first time, he only sold it after a couple elbows, then he completely went on like it never happened. Thankfully they came back to it & then Okada sold everything to the arm like death, and that's when it got really good.
Puro is such a polarizing thing for me - at times, I really love what they do & then at other times I just shake my head at it... a lot of the matches devolve into finisher-fests, with big move after big move. I know it's pretty much a completely different style than American wrestling (where when it's done well, every move means something), but they mix in enough of an American style that it can be frustrating to see match psychology fall apart. As good as he is already, Okada can fall into that trap of moving from move to move without remembering to sell certain things. Kinda like John Cena... also, just went back & watched the Summerslam match with Daniel Bryan, and that was some of his best selling in ages. Bryan just has a way of reigning guys in to tell a coherent story in the ring, and it's beautiful.
I think it would be cool if international promotions partnered with WWE to bring their product to the states. WWE can dub shows with English commentary on WWE Network.
That would be pretty awesome. If they ever do happen to make something like that happen, I would hope they seriously consider bringing Matt Striker to do commentary for those types of things. I know Striker gets a bad rep around the 'net for the way he called things sometimes, but I feel like commentating Puro matches with Regal could be his true calling in life. Because it's sometimes so radically different from American wrestling, you'd need guys who can explain the cultural differences and those two would be able to do it flawlessly.
Yeah I would love for WWE to do international partnerships. Especially for when they have green ass performers...They can take care of it by sending them to japan to hone their craft.
I can't cosign this enough. I understand that WWE wants guys to go through their system & learn the WWE way, but it's no coincidence that the guys they've signed who have adapted to the ring style quickest have worked all over the world. Part of it is experience, yes, but the other reason is because guys like Cesaro, Zayn & Neville have worked extensively with guys who don't speak English as a first language. If you can adapt to those conditions, figuring out how to work in a WWE ring is probably much easier.
Especially now with the way developmental is set up, it seems like there are guys who probably are on the verge of TV but just need a little extra seasoning. Working a few tours in Japan would be an excellent way to broaden their horizons while they wait for an NXT roster spot to open up.
