Hey, regardless whether you believe Zendaya is Michelle MJ or you don't think MJ is even in this movie/franchise, what do you think of Ellie Bamber as Mary Jane?

She's 19 and was in this year's Pride and Prejudice and Zombies as Jane Austen's Lydia, a character described (and was played as) "untamed, unabashed, wild, noisy, and fearless" and "energetic, flirtatious, social, confident, and self-assured".

works for me.

don't know who she is, but based on looks and the description of her PPZ character, she certainly fits the role better than Zendaya and Zendaya's portrayal of MJ.

She also bears a resemblance to one of the redheaded stunt doubles IMO

I'd be fine with Zendaya, but at least as far looks go this chick could kill it as MJ. Honestly makes me reconsider the blatant PC casting of this production. There's probably a dozen other girls with that same look who are vying for a breakthrough role and it gets snatched up by a Disney starlet who's already on her way up.

never seen her act, but she has the looks for it. anyone familiar with her work here? If so, how good/bad an actress is she?

I saw her in Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, she did a solid acting job. Her character was very similar to MJ.

I hate to say it people, but I honestly don't think MJ is going to be featured in the new movies.

Because Marvel doesn't seem to like the character very much.

Is she not getting her own series along with Peter and their daughter in RYV? She was Carnage in Ultimate Spider-Man?

I think people at Marvel do like the character, just not with Peter for whatever reason.

Exactly.

Then that should've been your original point. :oldrazz:

Well in any case, that's the main reason why I don't think we'll be seeing her in this universe (although I still believe there are plenty of people at Marvel who just flat out don't like her as a character either).

Keep in mind that the movie division is not the same as the comic book division.

I pretty much believe we will see MJ, whether Zendaya ends up being her or not, and if it's the latter, later down the line rather than popping up in Homecoming.

None of that matters though. Its up to Feige and Watts.

I wholly agree. Zendaya is fine with me for the role, but it reeks of politics.

So, Hollywood should just start giving roles to people who "need" it the most? I'm sure Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise don't need the roles they've been getting more than other actors do. They get roles based on bankability, and to a lesser extent, talent.

Honestly, I can never co-sign the act of posting random pictures of different actresses and using that as the basis for casting. Casting topics always inevitably devolve into posting various pretty redheads, asking "Do you think she'd be good," to various replies of "I have never seen her in anything, but I'd be okay with her." It sort of underlines the problem. People are willing to eat anything, as long as it looks familiar -- whether they know how it's going to taste, or not.

I'd understand it if people were familiar with the actors in question, but it never appears so.

Clearly the point he was making is there could potentially be BETTER actresses who more closely resemble the MJ from the comics who deserved the role but didn't get it because Zendaya is already on Disney's roster. Don't put words in other people's mouths.

Bravo.

Well considering the luck that spidey fandom has had for almost a decade now, I wouldn't be surprised if they have a bias against her as well.
Well i know Watts likes the character since he cited spider-man loves mary jane as well as ultimate as an influence. And Feige is a classic spider-man fan. Im not too worried about it.

Zendaya said she had to work hard and audition like everyone else for her role (which may very well not even ne mj) so that point is moot. Its not like they just cherry pick you out of their roster lol

I absolutely agree. That's my whole argument on Katherine McNamara and Ariel Winter. I'm fine with Zendaya as MJ as long as she does a solid acting job and Watts/Feige and Zendaya portray the character correctly. So, I hope this wasn't directed at me as I did not base my fan casting 100% on Bamber's appearance (I based on age, talent, and her previous role). I'm familiar with the actress and I believe her role/acting in PPZ matches MJ and she looks like one of the stunt doubles.
