To be honest, if she is MJ, I think I know what they are going for. She's one of those she's not afraid to express herself. It may not win her the popularity points but she'd be a true friend in the end.

And really you got two teen boys gawking at another girl.

Could be something Peter needs to prevent himself for going Tony Stark or getting a huge Ego(Tony Stark).

if you want Zendaya as MJ, this is it. She's pretty and she's got the playful sassy vibe. That gif evokes playful alpha female party girl - which is MJ.

her hair is even reddish.

but no. we're not getting that. we're getting this instead.

she'll have to undergo some ugly duckling transformation - not just in terms of look but also personality. And that's so totally not part of the character of MJ.

ah well. guess we'll see what happens.
God, that cannot be the same girl. :loco:

If it's even a girl.

it's Zendaya. the same girl.

I suppose it's a testament to the makeup/wardrobe department for turning beautiful Zendaya into very plain looking whoever she's playing.

if it's for an original character named Michelle? fine. I have no problem.

but if they are going to say that girl is the new MJ, who goes through some kind of transformation arc to be "prettier," then I do have a problem because that is so opposite what the character is supposed to be.

And apparently, Zendaya's character DOES go through a transformation arc. There are some new pics in the General thread where Zendaya is at the Homecoming party and bit glammed up in a yellow dress. However, her hairstyle is largely the same and she still has a sad/sour look on her face.

so, it's certainly NOT a transformation into the hot model Zendaya as shown in that gif above.

And again, if this is for an original character named Michelle, then fine. feel free to do whatever you want.

but don't impose it on an existing character, especially when said look and story arc doesn't fit the character.

If I hadn't been following this film at all, and I saw the trailer last night, I would NEVER in a million years think that girl is supposed to be the new MJ.

Precisely. She's going to be 'MJ', I'm sure of it. Not a fan of this, or other Homecoming choices.

I don't know what's worse. if she's actually going to be Mary Jane. or if she's going to be MJ as in Michelle Johnson or something.

and besides, in this day and age of empowerment messages, of not body shaming, of being who you are, wouldn't an arc where the girl has to transform herself to be "prettier" to get the guy to notice her kind of run contrary to those messages?

Honestly I can't stand non meta human love interest.

If I had my way he'd get with a super hero like Ultimate Peter & Ultimate Kitty.

Can't stand potential damsel in distress in comic book movies

People get dressed up for dances. It's not some new concept.

She looks sleepy.

More like she looks sick.

High school is a place where people can transform and find themselves. In my opinion if she's, MJ it would be more interesting to see her grow into MJ.
Personally I never liked MJ because she never felt real to me, she always felt like something from a bad fan fiction. At least now, she would have character development instead of just being a male fantasy.
But the transformation must be believable and they should take their time. I don't want something à la She's all that.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised a bunch of guys don't understand the concept of makeup.

Please don't make MJ some ugly duckling turned a swan "She's All That" transformation. It's so cliched and overdone. I'd rather she be a girl who thinks Peter is weird or a loser in the beginning but then the both of them come around and like each other. Being simply "Michelle", Marvel and Watts can do more with giving us new faces and lovers for Peter and bring in Gwen, MJ and others down the road.

Or perhaps Michelle is an alias for someone else not related to MJ like say she is really Felicia Hardy/Black Cat or as I've said and hoped for in the past White Tiger.

Hmm, after looking at that gif of Zendaya, I suppose I wouldn't mind her becoming MJ but I'll take it with a grain of salt for the meantime even when Zendaya herself mentioned that she's not intended to be Parker's love interest. Now isn't she also supposed to be Parker's neighbour too? Preferably, I do think she should still remain a surprise reveal like in the comics.

Indeed. I agree completely. Marvel would have their 'surprise reveal' at the end...even though it's all but known now....but the concept behind it all wouldn't work for me on any level.

Actually, going back to the "Face it, Tiger" reveal, I think they can still make that work simply by Zendaya's supposed transformation, given that she does end up being MJ. That said, she can still end up being Peter's Homecoming date but still not yet have any feelings for her until later...

Not only that, this type of story is SO cliched. Just because it's a high school movie doesn't mean they should use tired tropes like that. It's not only out of character for MJ, as well as insulting to Peter's character to suddenly start noticing her once she's all dolled up, it's something we've seen over and over again in a coming of age movie. Why do that in 2017.

While she did have her "she's that all" moment, she still doesn't look like MJ.

@lililatigresse Perhaps, but she is a good "cliche character" that deserved to be portrayed more accurately this time. I always felt Marvel has this strange idea that movie MJ being faithful to the original depiction somehow makes her unlikable. Yeah, the "party girl with a heart of gold" is indeed cliched but why always try to turn this character into something that she is not.

I'm starting to think maybe she is MJ from the trailer from that shot. She's so plain and frumpy that it almost has to be her in a so bad it's good sort of way. Why else would they go to all that trouble to make Zendaya so unattractive and unfeminine looking? She's practically got a double chin going on there and looks like she could be mistaken for a boy. It's almost like the Shailene Woodley photos of her without make up, except that here it's done deliberately.

It seems unfortunately that they probably are going for an ugly duckling transformation into MJ, which is definitely not who MJ ever has been.

If she is MJ then she probably won't "change/transform" into her till the in-credits portion of the film or before the credits. Show up at his door with red hair and a sexy new look. Unfortunately, she once again here looks frumpy, tired and unattractive. If she has to go through a remodeling of herself just to impress the guy, she has bigger issues going on and seems totally out of character for MJ.
