Shailene is a fine looking girl that was caught in a bad frame. Here they deliberately make a knockout babe look like this. I know the character is supposed to be like 15 here, but come on, Liz looks attractive without being sexualized. This version of MJ or whoever that is just feels wrong.

Zendaya looks super cute on those pictures and she's gorgeous in real life. Everyone is praising how Marvel got a "real kid!!" to play Peter but apparently, Zendaya must look super hot to play a high school student? The character she plays does not seem to be into make up or like to dress fancy which is fine.

As for being MJ, nothing indicates that Zendaya is playing MJ so there's no really need to say 'they got MJ completely wrong!".

So far her character does not look like MJ so she might as well be playing Kate Bishop, Gwen Stacy or even Carlie Cooper.

It's only an issue if she is playing MJ and if they are totally changing the character for a cliched ugly duckling transformation.

I'm starting to think maybe she is MJ from the trailer from that shot. She's so plain and frumpy that it almost has to be her in a so bad it's good sort of way. Why else would they go to all that trouble to make Zendaya so unattractive and unfeminine looking? She's practically got a double chin going on there and looks like she could be mistaken for a boy. It's almost like the Shailene Woodley photos of her without make up, except that here it's done deliberately.

It seems unfortunately that they probably are going for an ugly duckling transformation into MJ, which is definitely not who MJ ever has been.

If she is MJ then she probably won't "change/transform" into her till the in-credits portion of the film or before the credits. Show up at his door with red hair and a sexy new look. Unfortunately, she once again here looks frumpy, tired and unattractive. If she has to go through a remodeling of herself just to impress the guy, she has bigger issues going on and seems totally out of character for MJ.

if the ugly duckling transformation has been a major, consistent part of MJ's character throughout these many years of storytelling ( across various media, too ), then I'd have less of a problem with this. The character would have been less interesting to me for all this time, but at least they would be faithful to the character.

except........such a transformation arc has NEVER been part of MJ's character in any mainstream version of the character, as far as I know.

I've seen some compare Z's MJ to Ultimate comics MJ because she's more studious and all. That may be true, but Ultimate comics MJ NEVER looked like Z's plain, frumpy, disheveled MJ NOR did Ultimate MJ ever have the same dry, deadpan, serious, sarcastic introvert loner attitude that Z's MJ has. I read the early Ultimate comics and I don't remember MJ being like that at all - unless she was like that much later on.

And some say MJ may be a cliched character. Well, all characters are cliches to an extent. Even Peter is - skinny, nerdy dweeb becomes strong superhero who gets the girl.

But, if you dig deeper into these characters, you'll realize there's more to them - even MJ.

Take the classic approach to MJ. Hot, wild, carefree party girl who seems self absorbed and shallow. But all of that is a mask to hide her own rocky homelife. She may seem like the perfect princess but she's far from it. Once Peter gets to know the real MJ, that's what makes him fall in love with her.

Peter didn't fall in love with MJ because she's the hottest girl in school. In 616, he was dating Gwen first. He didn't suddenly dump Gwen because MJ was hotter. Peter and MJ got closer after Gwen's death when MJ was there for him emotionally ( and that brought out a more mature side of MJ ).

In Ultimate comics, Peter didn't fall in love with MJ because she's pretty. He loved her because she was his childhood best friend and caring confidante.

Here, though, if they are going with this transformation arc, they are taking a girl who Peter and Ganke most likely can't stand or ignore due to her looks and personality. But then suddenly Peter notices her at the end at Homecoming because she's all dressed up nice? ( and judging by those party pics, she's not even all that much different )

So, Peter will suddenly notice and fall for MJ because she's now hot?

That's not right. That's not MJ.

right. the approach they took to Liz, both in terms of look and how she was portrayed in the trailer, could have easily been applied to MJ.

that's why, to me, it feels like they've merely substituted Liz for MJ's role from the Raimi films.

it's not about Zendaya having to look super hot to play a HS student. it's about looking like the character you're supposed to portray. again, assuming Z is indeed MJ.

Z's character doesn't seem to be into make up or stylish dress. Ok, fine. But, that's NOT MJ. in fact, it's like the complete opposite of MJ's character.

it would be like a Bruce Wayne or Olliver Queen who doesn't care about staying in peak physical condition. You wouldn't have a short, fat balding man portray Batman or Green Arrow, because that's not who the characters are.

yes, Tom looks like a normal kid playing a HS student. And that's refreshing. But Tom also resembles the character he's portraying. You see the way he looks and acts and you see Peter.

Even Ned/Ganke. if they intentionally wanted Ned to be more like Ganke, then they got a kid who resembles the character. He looks and acts like Ganke - even though he's called Ned.

If Z is indeed portraying the new MJ, then she looks and acts nothing like the character.

well, Z's character does go through a transformation for the Homecoming dance because she's a bit glammed up with a fancy dress on.

but she still has largely the same messy hairstyle and she still has that sad/sour look on her face.

so, it's certainly not the dramatic makeover/transformation into bombshell/model Zendaya.

She'll only become the MJ we all know at the end of the trilogy. Or if they're going the Harry Potter route, it will be at the end of 6 or more movies. In the meantime, we've got to suffer through frumpy Michelle Johnson over several films just for a small payoff at the end where she finally becomes MJ but not even Mary Jane.

Yep, I think that's the best possible assessment given what we know so far. Peter being faithful to his original counterpart was probably the "compromise", while they took the HS cast, raceswapped them all to say they have diversity and then made their characteristics the opposite of what they are known to be. It's like a "they don't look the same, no need to act the same" kind of thing.
