Unless Billy Joel is now a woman who looks like Miley Cyrus and is called Billie Joel instead, but uses the initials BJ after a makeover. :oldrazz:

that would shatter reality as we know it for the longest time. :sly:

Of course, Billie Joel could just be Barbara Johnson who has the same initials "BJ" but isn't actually Billie Joel. :o

And maybe she sings a song called Downtown Boy, because there's nothing about that song that says it has to be up, or about a girl.

In fact, it could just be Down country boy.

as long as Barbara Johnson captures the spirit and essence and core of Billy Joel, it shouldn't matter, right? :o

and as long as Down Country Boy captures the spirit and essence and core of Uptown Girl, it shouldn't matter, right? :o

Here's the thing:

1. If they make her Michelle Johnson or Michelle Jane or whatever, they not only alienate fans who maybe wanted to see her Michelle Gonzales but they're also giving her a very white-washed name than embracing her bi-racial ethnicity.

2. If they make her Mary Jane Watson, they alienate some fans who wanted a more classic, traditional MJ ala a natural redheaded actress or someone who looks a lot like the comic book character.

3. If they use Michelle as a codename then they this is a very poorly misguided attempt at being secretive or throw fans off when leaks and supposed drafts of the script have revealed she may or may not be Mary Jane Watson depending on which script they finally went with or took pieces from one draft and placed in the final draft.

4. If they do make her Mary Jane but have her go through an ugly duckling/"She's All That"-transformation than they, too, run a risk of alienating fans who again want a more traditional 616 version of the character.

In other words, they are pretty much ****ed. Hence why I think their safest bet is just making her.... *drumroll* Michelle Gonzales or simply "Michelle."

Altering her name would be the worst alternative. They'll catch heat from both sides. Those praising them for casting a biracial Mary Jane might see this as a cop out, and the comic fans against a Zendaya MJ wouldn't like it either.

Making MJ biracial and/or giving her a characterization that isn't 616 might annoy some fans, but I doubt that it would have any effect in the grand scheme of things. The GA wont care, and most diehard Spider-man fans are going to watch a Spider-man movie (especially with it being the first Marvel production). And for every fan that sits out because they don't want a biracial MJ, there is someone who will watch this just because they cast a biracial MJ.

You may be right.

Well even if she sounds like Miley Cyrus at least she's still a singer. :o

as long as she can sing, who cares what she sounds like.

the tone and quality of the voice shouldn't matter as long as it captures the spirit and essence and core of the singer.

the irony there, of course, is that - if making MJ biracial and changing her character so much isn't that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things, then why the need for such mystery and subterfuge? why try to hide the truth if it's not that big of a deal?

:o

And even if she can't sing but has to take singing lessons to learn to sing in tune and hold a note, at least she's gone through a character arc to become the BJ we all know.

To emulate the mystery that surrounded MJ's appearance when she was first created and capture the same surprise when she is revealed

except - it totally misses the point of the original reveal and surprise.

the 616/SSM reveal worked because she was off screen, always alluded to, but never seen - until the reveal. She was a total mystery.

in Homecoming, they are trying to mimic that reveal by basically turning her into a different person with possibly a different name. and now, the surprise element is ruined anyways thanks to Mayimbe and his scoop.

Exactly. Not to mention what seems to be the fear or hesitation in making such an announcement. And this also goes for others in the cast: Green, Glover, and Mando. Why hasn't there been anything yet as far as who they're playing? Is there some trepidation with announcing them too? I just don't get it.

Sure, there are going to be people who might dislike they were cast as ____ but we're dealing in an age where people want to know without being too spoiled too. I think it's time to give us a full announcement. Hell, "Black Panther" has a full announcement. We now know who's playing who in "Doctor Strange" and "Thor: Ragnarok." Come on, Marvel.

When Mary Jane was revealed in the comics it wasn't a face palm or eye roll moment though. If Michelle Johnson shows up after a makeover and says to just call her MJ for short, that's not going to capture the same surprise or sentiment as in the comics.

yes! as long she's the BJ we all know and love by the end of the film, who cares what journey and arc her character had to take beforehand.

Who in their right mind woke up one morning and said, "Ya know, I want Michele Gonzales in a Spider-Man movie!"?

Sheesh, some of you are really reaching over the fear of Zendaya being Mary Jane.

It's not that she doesn't look Latino, it's because she isn't Latino. It'd be like casting Tom Holland as Miles Morales trying to pass him off as half black and half Latino which he is not. Give that role to a real Latino actresss. And to be fair, Michelle Gonzales is an extremely obscure character who only appeared in a few issues. The only reason most people's mind went to that character is because they googled "Spider-Man Michelle" and found that character. I don't think anybody going to be disappointed when she's not Gonzales simply because nobody or rather 'hardly' anbody cared about that character in the first place.

Exactly this.

hey. we're not the ones giving Zendaya's character the name "Michelle." :o

as harry said above, people see the name Michelle and then look up Spider-Man Michelle and come across Michelle Gonzales. naturally, without further information, they will draw links between the 2.

I think the original may have been difficult to pull off, if only because the ga already knows that MJ is supposed to be attractive. It wouldnt have been much of a suprise to the audience. What they could have done though is referred to Peter's blind date as "Anna's neice", not revealing her to be Mary Jane until Peter meets her for their date (similar to what they may be doing now...just without the Michelle cover up).

... die hard fans don't watch everything related to a character... just like people who love food don't eat crappy food.

there are fans with no opinions and who will be spoon fed anything and everything, but alot arn't like that. There's not a whole lot of Fantastic Four fans who liked Fant4stic let alone went to see it.
