I quite like the Zendaya casting, I can even deal with the incoming "She's All That" twist as forced as it is but the purist in me loathes the very idea of her being Michelle Johnson thus becoming MJ but never really Mary Jane. Just let Michelle be code and I'll live with it.

Though I'm not sure we're at all prepared for the million think pieces we're going to get for MJ's ugly duckling to swan arc.

and if you think about it, just giving her the name "Michelle" with no last name is kind of a ****** cover up attempt. when the other actors give the full names for their characters, and Zendaya is just "Michelle" that does make it stand out, as harry pointed out.

at least make up a last name for her. Like Miranda Tate was a full coverup name for Talia, not just Miranda.

I don't get what would Marvel Studios gain by changing Mary Jane's name; besides pissing thousands of fans off, of course. It'd be so apocalyptically dumb that I refuse to even entertain the idea that they'd ever actually do it.

Here's the thing:

1. If they make her Michelle Johnson or Michelle Jane or whatever, they not only alienate fans who maybe wanted to see her Michelle Gonzales but they're also giving her a very white-washed name than embracing her bi-racial ethnicity.

2. If they make her Mary Jane Watson, they alienate some fans who wanted a more classic, traditional MJ ala a natural redheaded actress or someone who looks a lot like the comic book character.

3. If they use Michelle as a codename then they this is a very poorly misguided attempt at being secretive or throw fans off when leaks and supposed drafts of the script have revealed she may or may not be Mary Jane Watson depending on which script they finally went with or took pieces from one draft and placed in the final draft.

4. If they do make her Mary Jane but have her go through an ugly duckling/"She's All That"-transformation than they, too, run a risk of alienating fans who again want a more traditional 616 version of the character.

In other words, they are pretty much ****ed. Hence why I think their safest bet is just making her.... *drumroll* Michelle Gonzales or simply "Michelle."

I don't think anybody going to be disappointed when she's not Gonzales simply because nobody or rather 'hardly' anbody cared about that character in the first place.

For all the reinvention they're doing with pre-existing characters already, they could easily reinvent Michelle Gonzales.

And who's to say genetically she got a little more traits from her mother or father? She can still be mostly black but still have some Latin in her. Hollywood has made things possible and believable time and time again regardless of who they've cast in the past for a certain race or ethnicity.

And if the sole goal it seems from this movie is to be "different" or not like what has been done in the past and for Peter to date someone non-Caucasian than why not have him date Michelle Gonzales or Gloria Grant? And just because those characters aren't well-known or recognizable names to the GA doesn't mean they can't be made that way. After all, Sally and Liz are in this; Cindy Moon might possible be in this.

see. I wouldn't want Zendaya playing Michelle Gonzales anymore than I would want her playing MJ or a white actress playing Storm.

Michelle Gonzales is Latina. the actress playing her should be Latina, or at least be bi-racial Latina. Zendaya is not Latina, even though at first glance, you might think she's Latina and her name, to me, sounds like it could be Latina.

but no, I wouldn't want Zendaya playing a character named Michelle Gonzales.

if they want to make Michelle an original character, who's based on Michelle Gonzales, but with a different surname, then I wouldn't have a problem with that.

so, in other words, no matter what, Marvel is ****** with this decision unless they go with a totally original character named Michelle something that's not Gonzales and that doesn't begin with a J......lol.
