Precisely. I could live with Zendaya as MJ if she acted like MJ from the Lee/Romita comics but 'Michelle' is literally nothing like MJ. It'll be tough to get over that
I'm still torn whether or not she actually is though. I wouldn't be surprised if they waited till like movie 3 to actually bring in MJ
The Zendaya/MJ I envisioned.
The Zendaya/MJ we could be getting.
As I said, I supported it in general because she, as a person, has everything MJ would need. This take, however, is purposely hiding all of that if all of this is true and she's not just being 'Michelle'.
and what's head scratching is that you have an actress who, race and hair color aside, has the model looks and sassy personality to pull classic 616/SSM MJ off.
even if they went the more "studious" route of Ultimate comic MJ, they could have done that, too, as there are pics of Zendaya in glasses looking more "conservatively" but no less beautiful.
but no. they went for the basket case/weirdo loner character type, which DOES NOT FIT MJ AT ALL. PERIOD.
As Dark Raven said above, they are trying to fit these characters into some weird Breakfast Club template, but in so doing they are getting the character types all wrong.
Some characters are introverts - some are extroverts. Some are loners - some are social flirts. Some are kind - some are mean.
These are characters with established histories - you can't just simply mix and match them to the point where they don't match their character types.
For example, I'm playing through the game Persona 5.
One of the girls, Futaba, is a weirdo/basket case, genius hacker shut-in who has a hard time functioning around people and large crowds.
That's her character type. She's not the bombshell beauty who models part time ( Ann ). She's not the studious student council president who's tired of doing what everyone else expects of her ( Makoto ).
No, Futaba is Futaba. Just as MJ is MJ.
it would be like if they made a Persona 5 live action film and suddenly made Futaba a flirty sexy party girl who loves being the center of attention.
NO!! That's like the total OPPOSITE of what her character is supposed to be.
yet, that's exactly what they're doing here with this "Michelle" character if she indeed is MJ.
and let's say, a director wants to apply the Persona 5 "template" to a new Spider-Man film.
Ok. fine. but match the Spidey characters to the closest Persona characters.
MJ, for example, would be closer to Ann - not Futaba.
