We still don't know who Zendaya is playing? If its a secret then there must be a giant twist to this enigma?

That's why I still haven't ruled out that she's MJ. I don't mind the casting but I wish the character was actually like 616 MJ

I'm holding out hope she isn't. She closest to Ultimate but she's even a far-cry from her. I still think they'll do it, though

I loved Ultimate MJ but you're right that she doesn't seem much like her. Webb's Gwen Stacy to me was basically Ultimate MJ in all but name

I'm still rooting for a 'Tiger, you just hit the jackpot' intro to MJ

So, umm.....

Don't think MTV of all sources would know, but that's just me.

The journalist who wrote the article even said it was just based on the rumors.

So back to cozy square one (for now).

if she's MJ, then I'm officially out.

As someone who supports the idea of Zendaya (in general) being MJ, I'd be with you if true. Their execution is all wrong..but it'd fit everything else in the film.

Ned Leeds covering Ganke, Mary Jane covering Kate Bishop, Flash covering Amadeus Cho, etc.

and coupled with all those other changes, a drastic change to MJ's look and, more importantly, characterization would be the final straw.

I can tolerate those other changes. but I've been wanting a more faithful adaptation of MJ since the Raimi films.

the direction they seem to be going with this MJ, again if true, is certainly anything but faithful.

Precisely. I could live with Zendaya as MJ if she acted like MJ from the Lee/Romita comics but 'Michelle' is literally nothing like MJ. It'll be tough to get over that

I'm still torn whether or not she actually is though. I wouldn't be surprised if they waited till like movie 3 to actually bring in MJ

The Zendaya/MJ I envisioned.

The Zendaya/MJ we could be getting.

As I said, I supported it in general because she, as a person, has everything MJ would need. This take, however, is purposely hiding all of that if all of this is true and she's not just being 'Michelle'.

and what's head scratching is that you have an actress who, race and hair color aside, has the model looks and sassy personality to pull classic 616/SSM MJ off.

even if they went the more "studious" route of Ultimate comic MJ, they could have done that, too, as there are pics of Zendaya in glasses looking more "conservatively" but no less beautiful.

but no. they went for the basket case/weirdo loner character type, which DOES NOT FIT MJ AT ALL. PERIOD.

As Dark Raven said above, they are trying to fit these characters into some weird Breakfast Club template, but in so doing they are getting the character types all wrong.

Some characters are introverts - some are extroverts. Some are loners - some are social flirts. Some are kind - some are mean.

These are characters with established histories - you can't just simply mix and match them to the point where they don't match their character types.

For example, I'm playing through the game Persona 5.

One of the girls, Futaba, is a weirdo/basket case, genius hacker shut-in who has a hard time functioning around people and large crowds.

That's her character type. She's not the bombshell beauty who models part time ( Ann ). She's not the studious student council president who's tired of doing what everyone else expects of her ( Makoto ).

No, Futaba is Futaba. Just as MJ is MJ.

it would be like if they made a Persona 5 live action film and suddenly made Futaba a flirty sexy party girl who loves being the center of attention.

NO!! That's like the total OPPOSITE of what her character is supposed to be.

yet, that's exactly what they're doing here with this "Michelle" character if she indeed is MJ.

and let's say, a director wants to apply the Persona 5 "template" to a new Spider-Man film.

Ok. fine. but match the Spidey characters to the closest Persona characters.

MJ, for example, would be closer to Ann - not Futaba.

If Zendaya had just been herself and what she normally looks like, and had played a party girl who is very popular but seems rather superficial, and Peter later discovers he has misjudged her and that there's much more to her, then even if she isn't white, I'd still have accepted her.

I don't care if she turns into normal Zendaya at the end of the movie now though. The fact that she was this awkward, bookish social misfit who goes through some transformation arc to become the party girl is not at all who MJ is or the journey she should be experiencing. Even if the actress were white and still were socially awkward and bookish but, by the movie's end, transformed into the more familiar MJ, I'd still not find that acceptable.

exactly.

O come now. It'd be a new take on the popular girl falling in love with geek guy we've seen so many times before. Just look at it as a different iteration

except it's not.

for this to be a new take on that, the girl would have to be popular.

"Michelle" is just the opposite. She's the frumpy looking weirdo loner who hangs off by herself and makes dry, sarcastic comments about others. I'd imagine not very many people want to hang out with her.

that's the problem with this character. If Michelle is the new MJ, she's not just a mere variation/iteration of a classic character, but a radical departure.

Not saying it can't be done, but it doesn't really resemble the character.

Sony's takes were more faithful for Spidey as a whole compared to this

I never thought I'd say that but alas

She does't have to be popular. She can be popular by the end of the movie. Who knows. Before Mary jane was her happy self she was sad and lonely due to abuse at home but began acting out to hide her true feelings.

This was a stupid thing to do & most fans agree
