Homecoming The Zendaya is possibly someone, maybe thread - Part 3

She's probably a mix between MJ and Ult!Kate Bishop (since they're stealing stuff from Miles), basically the love interests of Peter and Miles ...or a new character or an amalgamation of the above.

And I can't believe people are bringing up Michelle Gonzales again, maybe I should bring in articles of Zendaya talking about representation to explain how she would not go for a Latina role, she identifies as black while acknowledging she is biracial, and might I remind everyone Amandla Stenberg went for this role, had she been cast no one would be assuming she was playing Michelle Gonzales, they would be assuming she's a new character because she's the black biracial with the curly afro hair that screams black while Zendaya has "straight hair" which doesn't scream black apparently, so much so it confused people to the race of Zendaya and made them think she was "Latina" even though her name was a big blinking red sign of a clue...

And if this Michelle character was a variation of Gonzales Marvel would more than likely still have cast a Latina, cause mixing the character's personality trait doesn't mean you change one of the few latina characters into another race by casting a non-latina, like what an obvious backlash trap Marvel would have fallen into, I could understand the mental gymnastics people are going through if the character was Asian, b/c Hollywood treats Asian characters and actors like **** but come on now...

Ok, but that post is a good reminder to maybe actually talk and stick to talking about what the thread title entails tho so...

You bringing up Debra Whitman reminds me of this poster who is on YouTube and multiple forums stating how Zendaya is playing a type Debra Whitman, they're saying it so much it made me believe even more how Zendaya's character is not playing her.

Ned Leeds isn't usually Asian in the comics, so who says Michelle Gonzales has to be Latina?

And even if you were to go by her surname as an indication, well she could be Filipino, since many Filipinos have Hispanic-sounding surnames but are clearly not Hispanic.

There are all sorts of ways she could end up with the name Gonzales without being Latina. Maybe her mother could even have remarried someone with that name when Michelle was young, and Michelle also adopted that name too (or the parents changed her name).

Felicia Hardy

Am I the only one who'd be OK with this?

As I said before:
  • Those that want a good movie will be pleased.
  • That that want a good Spider-Man movie will be pleased.
  • Those wanting a good Spider-Man movie that uses/respects/stays-true-to the source will be disappointed.
That's just how I see it going.
  • Average moviegoers that attend superhero showings won't care.
  • Casual Spider-Man fans that only know stuff from the past films may care but not-a-lot in the long run.
  • Hardcore comic-reading and/or following Spider-Man fans will be split over all the deviations/liberties taken, as evident already these past few months.

:applaud

I lean more to the first two points, despite being a hardcore Spidey nerd. I can handle differences from the source material if they are done well and respectfully with minor actual mythos changes, which hopefully these all are.

None of the changes we've seen have been minor, Itchy. The Ganke thing completely changes the dynamic of early teen Peter if we're going off of 616. Now, Zendaya is probably another hybrid character they've cobbled up from Miles and Peter's mythos.

It does really look like she's just Michelle after all. This movie is incredibly weird

No overzealous fanboys are weird; constantly looking for "faults" and to be offended by inconsequential matters. Homecoming isn't doing anything new or drastic that every other MCU film released and yet to be released hasn't already done or been "guilty" of. Some of the crazy whinging actually make people like batfreak appear level headed at times and that's saying something.

Wild shot in the dark, but what if Michelle is the Vulture's daughter?

I knew one day the Vultress concept would come back to haunt us. :o

I didn't say that her being Michelle was a fault. I'm excited to see what Zendaya brings to the table. But I still feel that a lot of the decisions are weird, despite not being bothered by them

The trailer seem to give the indication that Toomes learns that Spider-Man is Peter at some point. If she's his daughter or otherwise connected to him, maybe she plays a role in that, hence all the secrecy surrounding here character.

Just my crazy bit of speculation for the day. And I don't think she'd be suiting up at any point. :cwink:

Actually it is, Homecoming is deviating more than any other MCU BY FAR.

I think its just a result of Spider-Man being such a popular and well-known character that people are going to have more preconceived notions as to how the character should be handled. That didn't exist with the other characters they have access to like Iron Man.

And at the end of the day, Marvel Studios' MO has never been complete fidelity to every single detail of the source material but rather preserving the essence of what make their characters and mythos work. And I expect that will be the case here.

If Talion is right, she's probably another hero. Me thinks Ultimate Kate Bishop

I think most likely that she's simply an original character, with her really being Mary Jane as the second likeliest possibility.

It's possible that the trailer is misleading you to think he's talking to Peter, when it actually could be somebody else.

However, he does seem like he might find out about Pete's identity in the beach scene.

But we know they're not preserving the essence of the source material with the mythos, if you've been following the news you know what we've been talking. The essence of the mythos is built around the characters and so far they've shown they don't care about any of Spidey's characters as evidenced by all of them being literally INO versions of their former selfs. That's what they've been doing, slapping comic names onto original characters.

And again, I'm fully aware of the characters' mythos and I can boldy say they have not changed the essence of those franchises.

Also another foundation for Spidey's mythos is Uncle ****ing Ben who they've been blatantly ignoring.

I've stopped taking Talion seriously a while after he spewed the whole Civil War MJ "easter egg". Just looking for attention.

I think its too early to definitively conclude that they were unsuccessful in preserving the essence of Spider-Man and his mythos bases on rumors and information with little-to-no context.

I get a lot of the concerns that have been expressed, but the only character that I would say qualifies as a name slap at the moment is Ned Leeds. Zendaya may very well not be MJ considering the source of that rumor, Harrier seems to be a good fit for Liz, and we don't really know anything about Revolori's Flash to make any firm judgment.

I thought he was implied in CW with Peter's comment about how when you have powers and don't do what's right, then things will go wrong. I'd be very surprised if there is no mention of him in Homecoming.

I think Zendaya is going to be named Mary-Kate Ashley Kafka Osborn.

If you seriously believe people (especially Spider-Man fans) go into anything regarding this film looking for faults (or to be offended) -- let alone the film that now exists within the Marvel Cinematic Universe -- then there's really nothing to say to that besides being a huge reach and it just makes you look foolish as a result.

A lot of us don't care about what the MCU has done up to this point because up to this point, Spider-Man and the MCU weren't one in the same. Now it's a different story and now people have numerous notions of how the character should be handled. Doesn't make it right necessarily if you want to argue that point (damned if you do, damned if you don't) but it doesn't make it wrong either. It's just a comic book movie and people that get so invested in characters and their mythos will expect certain beats to be hit.

Not just Liz and Flash:

These two characters next to Zendaya & Abraham Attah they're calling them Sally Avril & Jason Macendale... Why? Why do they call them those names when they're obviously not going to share anything with the comic characters? Literally slapping comic names onto original characters like I said. Sally Avril of this movie looks way closer to Laura Lynton. & I doubt this Jason will become a Hobgoblin. (What is Marvel's obsession with taking Hobgoblin alter egos' names? First Ned then Jason)

Betty Brant:

She looks exactly like Gwen but they're calling her Betty Brant...? Wtf? Probably their way of including classic Gwen. But still, if they wanna do Gwen again, just do her please. Don't slap an important character from Spidey's mythos' name onto her in an effort to distance yourself from TASM.
