A new superhero friend for Peter. Just like Steve had Bucky and Tony had Rhodey. I don't want to see this personally, but to add an other hero (probably in the sequel) would be a way to sell more toys.

She's Firestar? :p

Flash Thompson 2017 is an obnoxious nerd rival of Peter Parker. Makes sense.

Not really. It's not like physical jock bullying isn't prominent anymore

That being said, I don't really care about it.

At least the backlash will be much larger then the handling of Flash has been if that really is the case.

this.

no offense to Flash, but MJ is much higher up on the Spidey foodchain than Flash.

Flash is still an important character, and I still don't like what they're doing with him here, but MJ's importance and impact dwarf Flash.

as such, major changes to MJ's character will garner much more backlash than changes to Flash.

I could tolerate the changes to Flash if the rest of the movie was superb, including comic accurate Peter/Spidey AND MJ.

I will not, however, tolerate the changes made to MJ if this Michelle is indeed the new MJ.

Yeah, last year: the "Michelle is MJ" backlash was so bad that you had Stan Lee & James Gunn stepping out to try & defend it lol

James Gunn somehow feels like someone who's always ready for a fight.

which only lent credence to the rumors, which further inflamed the passions of both sides of the debate.

even though both Stan and James were focusing more on the whole "Should MJ be non-white" debate, which imo, was missing the larger issue.

the bigger issue was the total Bizarro subversion of her overall look ( pretty bombshell to frumpy plain-jane ) and her overall personality ( bubbly party girl to dour, sarcastic, loner bookworm ).

that for me was always the main issue ( not the skin color ) and ironically ran counter to James Gunn's main argument. He basically said as long as they capture the spirit of the character - playful alpha female party girl - then who cares about her skin color.

except, the character of Michelle, as demonstrated more and more in the clips and info being released, in no frickin way embodies that spirit as outlined by Gunn.

she could be as pale and ghostwhite as WWE's Sheamus ( fella!! ) and even be a true redhead, but if she acted and dressed as Michelle does, she would still not be MJ.

Preach.

I'd prefer to keep the visual authenticity of MJ intact because of how important she is, however I'd choose substance over style any day.

:wowe:

After Kirsten and Shailene, I really need some feisty and accurate MJ.

Your last paragraph reminds me of Kirsten!MJ who had the look but was not like the comics.

at least Kirsten MJ looked like comic MJ and had some elements of the character.

Michelle neither looks nor acts anything like any version of MJ in all the various forms of media that I'm familiar with.

and speaking of Shailene, that proves my point of how you could get a white actress and give her red hair ( don't know if Shailene is a natural redhead ) but if you purposefully deemphasize their beauty and make them plain and meh looking, that's still not MJ.

from the setpics of Shailene's MJ that I saw, it looked like they were going for a plain "tomboyish" motorcycle chick angle for her, which is not MJ.

As far as we know, Michelle ≠ MJ, right? Gaaaaahhhh I can't believe this is still being debated...

Do we know for sure that Zendaya's character is named Michelle and/or that she's actually Mary Jane? I haven't kept up with all the news, and it seems like people have gone back and forth on this.

I remember the backlash last year, I can't say it bothers me if she's Mary Jane, although I do get why fans of the comics are annoyed by the decision. The only incarnation of Mary Jane that I'm familiar with was the one from the first Spider-man trilogy, and I found her kind of annoying and overall pretty forgettable. A lot of other people seem to feel the same way, so maybe Marvel wants to distance themselves from that interpretation. I enjoy awkward nerd type characters (and brown hair over red hair, lol), so I'll enjoy this interpretation.

It all started with speculation from day one.

Zendaya was cast and everybody was going crazy with speculation on who she was (loads of people saying Michele Gonzales because she was called Michele), with someone bringing up the idea she was Mary Jane. Tons of speculation later, Umberto Gonzalez aka elmayimbe dropped an article stating she was in fact playing Mary Jane Watson but it would be done in similar fashion to John Blake being "Robin". Michele would tell Peter at the end of the dance he could call her 'MJ'. I can't remember if this was ever officially debunked but I know Zendaya has been adamant she is in fact playing Michele 100%.

Michele is said to be based off Zendaya and she has a lot of mystique about her. She still doesn't have a last name, she seems to be going through the Ally Sheedy route from ugly duckling to beautiful swan and we know she's meant to be a major love interest in the sequels.

Wow. The user on here who called her being Michelle Rodriguez was right on the money. :funny:

And yay, Michelle ain't MJ, so everybody can calm themselves now.

^ if that's true about Michelle, then I'm super relieved and I'm actually more interested in the character now.

I'm down with that character angle and I'm interested if Michelle becomes [BLACKOUT]Vulture[/BLACKOUT] herself in the future as an [BLACKOUT]enemy[/BLACKOUT] of Peter.

Same  This is one [blackout]Change[/blackout] I can definitely get behind. I could see how she'd appear in future movies

It's also basically the same thing they were planning to do in the 4th Raimi film

yep.

and since she's essentially an [BLACKOUT]original character[/BLACKOUT] and [BLACKOUT]tied to a lesser known/used villain[/BLACKOUT], there's way more leeway to work with the character, as opposed to a well established character like MJ or Gwen or the Osborns.

I'm all on board for this. [blackout]Could add some depth to Toomes as well.[/blackout]

I love it too. There is so much more you can do with her. [BLACKOUT] Will she be set up as a future villain, love interest, etc...[/BLACKOUT]. Now I am excited

don't want her as a LI ( since Peter already has iconic LIs ), but as a future [BLACKOUT]rival, villain, or even rival-turned-ally[/BLACKOUT] I wouldn't mind.
