It's interesting hearing that perspective juxtaposed against what I'm hearing a lot out there from others-- keeping in mind nobody is right or wrong its just about how u personally experienced Thor and how it left you.
I think these guys (in the video below) best sums up what I got from Thor.
Heavy Spoilers!!! Skip to 19:30 for talk about Thor:
I think maybe you missed some of my prior comments regarding Thor and I think maybe I didn't expand enough on his involvement during the first two acts. Again, I liked the gag up until the end battle sequence. It's understandable given his arc how he might've let himself go. I generally laughed at just about everything he said/did or how other characters interacted with him up until that point. In fact I have a feeling the Russo's promised him he'd get to pull more Ragnarok into this film after what happened in IW.
I will say though - it wasn't a "requirement" that he had to be an overweight slob for it to work. He could've just been a drunken slob. It's when we get to the Avengers compound sequence where everyone else is at their best - Thor's over there powering up and his armor is barely wrapping around that belly of his. It was almost like watching Jeff Lebowski hard charging at the most powerful being in all of the universe.
In that moment, I wanted my old Thor back. There were so many inexplicable things that happened in the movie - why couldn't Asgardian enchantment return him back to his old form? As the fight progressed there was nothing memorable about his involvement. He powered up IM. He was the plot device to allow Cap his Mjolnir moment. And that was that.
