Thor story arc

We've covered the 'Who controls the lightning' question in regards to Zeus and Thor - here's another one - 'Who controls the lightning' between Storm and Thor?

My first instinct was to say Thor given that he's the God of thunder and all but we have seen over the years that mutants can given even gods a run for their money..............

Didn't Thor beat Storm in a battle reasonably recently? I would really feel that in a clash of (only) lightning bolts, Thor would easily come out on top. Of the battle.

Well see if Thor was BORN with his weather powers, even as an Asgardian he'd be a mutant as well, just a bit more durable and immortal. lol
As Loki would also be Asgardian Mutant even as a Frost Giant he was born with his shape shifting powers.

yeah there was not sure where tho.

I think it was Contest of Champions II. As I recall, he kissed Storm and literally kept her from breathing until she passed out.

It was kind of a weird mini. The Hulk snorted Mr. Fantastic up his nose in it, too.

I thought there was something during this last Crossover?

I might be mistaken, I don't recall where Ragnarok/Clor appeared either.

There was the time he got loose at the end of Avengers Initiative is when I'm thinking tho. Before he was trashed the 2nd time.

Seriously :wow: - A new take on snorting the long, thin white line!!!

I think that once he got Mjolnir he was able to control storm weather because Beta Bill Ray too has storm powers but I believe those are given by Stormbreaker.

So it would seem the most logical explanation that once they became worthy of said weapon they were able to master the powers that came with the weapon. Unless of course both he and Beta Bill Ray both were born with the powers and it's just a coincidence.

Point is, HE has the power of THOR not the power of Mjolnir or Stormbreaker.
Anyone worthy of mjolnir gets Thor's powers, Odin gave BRB Thor's powers via Stormbreaker.

Yeah, Odin gave Mjolnir all of its enchantments and we've never actually seen that story printed in a comic. So for all we know, he saw that his son already had weather powers and just included an enchantment to bolster them on the hammer he knew he would one day give to him, resulting in anyone else who's worthy of Mjolnir acquiring weather abilities through it.

Think of it this way: Captain America got super-strength when he lifted Mjolnir, yet neither Thor nor Beta Ray Bill gain any additional strength from it. The hammer grants "the power of Thor," so if you've already got Thor-level strength--as Bill (and obviously Thor) did--it wouldn't somehow double your strength or anything. If, however, you have normal human strength, it'll boost your strength up to Thor's level, effectively making you more like Thor. It's basically right there in the phrasing.

I never thought about it like that, but yeah Mjolnir has Thor's power not the other way around

heh it does say right on Mjolnir,

WHOSOEVER HOLDS THIS HAMMER, IF HE BE WORTHY, SHALL POSSESS THE POWER OF THOR.

Does anyone know what comic/issue Cap lifts Mjolnir in? I've seen it referenced and referred to in comics, but I've never read the actual story. I'd love to check it out.

Thor #390.

Yes, he does. It's a bit gross.

That is too funny. I was half joking, but I might need to check out the Reed snot rocket now. It sounds like a very strange storyline.

Thanks for the info on Cap and Mjolnir. I'll definitely be looking for that.

I've always found it a bit lame when characters besides Thor lift Mjolnir. It's even cool when Odin, Bor, & Tiwaz lift Mjolnir but Cap, Beta Ray, Superman, & Wonder Woman.....NO

I thought it would be fun to speculate on the story by putting together the pieces from the trailer and the spoilers revealed last week.

ACT ONE:
The movie starts off with Natalie Portman, Kat Dennings and Stellan Skarsgård in a van out in the New Mexico desert observing a phenomenon in the sky. This is when Thor drops to Earth. Natalie Portman accidentally hits him with her van (which she does again later in the film)

Cut to a flashback of Thor back on Asgard. He's about to be anointed king by his father, Odin (Anthony Hopkins.) Odin must appoint a successor to rule the kingdom while he goes into his ritual Odin sleep, the time of which draws near. During the ceremony, two warriors from the kingdom of the frost giants infiltrate Odin’s royal storage chamber to steal the "Casket of Ancient Winters," a small blue relic Odin obtained during a battle with their people.

Thor argues that Odin should retaliate against the frost people since they now broke the truce with Asgard, but Odin isn’t convinced. Disregarding his father’s explicit wishes, Thor convinces Loki, Sif, and the warriors three (Fandrall, Hogun, and Volstagg) to accompany him to the realm of the frost giants.

The band of six walk along the fabled rainbow bridge leading to a large dome like structure. This building at the end of the rainbow bridge is the Asgardian transport chamber. Here, the citizens of Asgard can travel to and from any of the known nine realms. Hemidall, the all-seeing guardian who stands vigil at the edge of the rainbow bridge, uses his sword like a key and slides it down into into the transport chambers center console. The large domed room, it’s golden walls covered with large circular patterns, begins to fill with arcing bolts of energy that reach from the central console to each of the circles along the dome. Thor and his party are instantly transported away from Asgard and arrive in the cold snowy realm of the frost giants.

Shortly after they’re arrival, the six warriors are attacked by soldiers of the frost realm. Despite Thor kicking ass for much of the scene, the Asgardians are finally defeated when the powerful king of the frost realm arrives. The six friends are about to be killed when Odin appears and comes to their rescue.

Once the group rematerialize safely back in the Asgard transport chamber, a visibly weary and weakened Odin orders everyone to stop. He is late for his annual life sustaining sleep ritual, and this excursion to the frost realm has drained his remaining life energy further. But Odin is angry that this group disobeyed his wishes, and he chastises everyone in the room for what happened, especially Thor, whose actions today have convinced Odin that his eldest son is not yet ready to be leader of the realm. Thor becomes enraged at this and lashes out at his father. Odin responds to his insolent son by stripping him of his powers and weapons. Odin decrees Thor be banished from the golden realm and his oldest son instantly vanishes from the transport chamber. Loki asks for how long is his brother to be banished. Odin looks down at Thor’s hammer and states that his son will regain his powers and return home only after he learns humility and proves himself worthy. Odin then tosses Thor’s hammer into the transport stream as well. When asked who will now lead Asgard in his absence, a weary and depressed Odin looks at Loki, and then responds that he has no one worthy of the responsibility. He turns and returns to the royal palace to finally begin his Odin sleep.

ACT TWO:

Thor groggily awakens in a strange hospital bed. Without thinking, he attacks and dispatches the medical staff attending to him. He steals clothing from one of the fallen staff and storms out of the facility. He discovers he is in some small remote town and runs off into the surrounding desert.

In the New Mexico desert, a small group of local people are gathered around an object in the center of a fresh massive crater. Thor’s hammer lies lodged in a pillar of earth at the center of this crater. One of the group tries in vain to lift the hammer, but it won’t budge. Another man then tries hitching the hammer to the back of his pickup truck. He puts the truck in drive and guns the engine, but the hammer remains inexplicably unmoved.

Odin is sleeping soundly with his wife Friga and Loki at his bed side. Friga tells Loki that he is now the successor to the throne and must assume leadership. Loki knows this was not Odin’s wish, but he soon announces to the royal court that he is assuming the throne in his father’s absence. Thor’s four friends from the frost realm battle are present, and know that Odin did not trust Loki with command of the kingdom. They look at each other with skepticism about this turn of events.

On earth, Jane Foster is driving at night along a desolate road with a team of fellow scientists. A strange figure suddenly appears in front of their van and is struck. Thor slowly awakens to the face of Jane Foster knelt over him. This time, rather than attack the very attractive scientist and her team he accepts their assistance. He appears the next morning cleaned up and ready for a much needed meal. The scientists are naturally skeptical of Thor’s explanation of who he is and where he comes from. Thor learns that this team of scientists are here to investigate two mysterious funnel-cloud weather anomalies, both of which appeared around the same time a mysterious object fell from the sky into the desert. An object being described as a hammer with strange carvings. Thor demands to know where this hammer is now. He is told the U.S. government has taken possession of the site and it’s heavily guarded with a SHIELD secuity force. Afer he is provided a specific location, Thor races off determined to retrieve his property and powers.

In Asgard, Loki stands with Heimdall in the transport chamber as the king of the frost giants arrives in Asgard. Loki states that he is negotiating a new peace agreement between the two realms, as his father would have wanted. Heimdall looks on with helpless fury as Loki greets and escorts their enemy to the royal palace as a friend.

Thor arrives at the makeshift SHIELD compound built up around the crater surrounding his hammer. He brazenly rips into the security guards, and successfully breaches the facility. He makes his way down to the floor of the crater where the hammer still sits unmoved atop a pillar of earth. He grasps the handle of his hammer and struggles to lift it. He is no more able to move the hammer than any of the others who have tried since it fell to to this spot. Thor falls to his knees in despair as an army of guards surround him in the tower constructed above the hammer, their weapons trained on him.

Loki and the frost king are alone in the palace and talking openly. We learn that it was actually Loki who helped the frost people infiltrate the palace earlier. Loki also made a deal with the frost king to kill Odin while he is vulnerable during the Odin sleep, in exchange for Loki assuming complete control of Asgard. Sif and the warriors three learn of Loki’s deception and go off to devise a plan to stop him.

Thor sits bound to a chair in the SHIELD camp. He is being interrogated by SHIELD Agent Coulsen. Soon, another SHIELD technician rushes in to alert Coulsen that another funnel cloud event just hit in the desert. Coulsen rushes out with a team of agents to investigate.

Sif and the warriors three have just arrived on Earth. They start off into the New Mexico desert to find their exhiled friend, Thor.

FINAL ACT:

Now alone in a detention cell, Thor is visited by Loki. His brother tells him that their father has died, killed while vulnerable in his sleep. Loki goes on to admit that he was always jealous their father favored Thor. He confesses that he still feels threatened by his brother even though Odin is dead and Thor is stranded and powerless. Loki knows that Sif and the warriors three have left Asgard for Earth. He is now forced to take extreme and regrettable measures to ensure Thor and his friends never return to Asgard. Helpless rage overwhelms Thor as Loki vanishes from the room.

In Asgard, Loki strides into Odin’s vast armory where the all-father stored his ultimate weapon. A metal suit of armor stands alone, named simply the Destroyer.

As always, Heimdall stands vigil in the rainbow bridge transport chamber when he suddenly spies a lone, threatening figure making it’s way down the bridge toward him. The Destroyer’s heavy foot steps echo inside Heimdall’s transport chamber as the valiant guardian stands ready with his sword to challenge the giant metal monstrosity.

The warriors three walk up to the SHIELD compound and make short work of the security force remaining at the site to guard the hammer. They quickly find Thor in his cell and free him. Thor warns that Loki has probably done something that threatens everyone in the area. He insists they immediately go to the nearby town and warn Jane and the other residents of the impending danger.

Coulsen and his team arrive at ground zero of the funnel-cloud weather anomalies. Shortly after their arrival, a new storm kicks up in the skies above them. The powerful swirling winds funnel down to earth and hit the ground like a missile strike. When the cloud dissipates and the dust clears, the armored Destroyer steps forward and attacks, devastating the helpless SHIELD team.

Thor and his friends warn Jane of the impending danger. The distant funnel cloud signaling the Destroyer’s arrival was seen by everyone in town. The warriors from Asgard begin the evacuation of the town’s residents.

Thor and his friends scramble to get the last residents off to safety when the Destroyer finally arrives at the outskirts of the small town. Jane and the warriors look on as Thor, without his powers or hammer, bravely steps forward to confront the beast. Aware that Loki has to be piloting the beast, Thor tries to reason with his brother. He apologizes for all of the things that caused Loki to be resentful after becoming king of Asgard. Once Thor completes his entreaty, the Destroyer, under Loki’s control, attacks. Thor is quickly knocked unconscious by the beast’s attack. The Destroyer moves in to finish Thor off but the warriors three quickly attack from all angles. Jane and Sif rush over to Thor’s side and help him to his feet. Sif pleads with him to try once more to retrieve his hammer. Thor initially refuses to abandon his friends in a fight, but Jane reminds him of all the good he has done today, and the bravery he displayed by standing before the Destroyer to reason with Loki. HE must surely be worthy in his father’s eyes now. Sif stresses that their only chance for survival rests with a fully powered god of thunder. Reluctanly, Thor accepts their argument and races off with Jane back to the SHIELD compound.

Sif joins the warriors three in battle against the Destroyer’s unstoppable onslaught. Although they battle bravely, the four are unable to stop Odin’s ultimate weapon. The Destroyer eventually incapacitates all four warriors and moves in for the kill when the sky suddenly grows dark. A mighty bolt of lightning flashes down from the clouds above striking the Destroyer and knocking it backward. Thor soars down landing in the abandoned street with his full armor and power, ready to challenge the Destroyer. The iron monster attacks and this battle is far more devastating than the earlier fight. Thor unleashes the full power of his hammer, summoning gale force winds and striking the Destroyer with devastating blasts of energy. Vehicles are tossed about like toys and entire blocks of buildings are demolished during their conflict. Ultimately however, the Destroyer is again victorious. The monster lifts the fallen thunder god by his cape and raises him to eye level. The two are face-to-face as the Destroyer’s visor plates open. He prepares to finish Thor with his powerful destroyer beam when the thunder god gestures with his hand. His hammer flies to his waiting grip and Thor instantly lifts the weapon above his head and slams it down hard over the Destroyers open visor just as the energy blast is unleashed. The trapped energy from the Destroyers open face visor explodes. Thor is sent flying backward and the Destroyer drops to both knees. Smoke billows from the open neck of the monster as the armor falls limp and inanimate to the street.

Thor rises and regroups with his friends to ensure everyone is okay. He approaches Jane and they share a final kiss before he and the others are to return to Asgard to confront Loki. Thor promises Jane that he will return to her. He turns and leaves with his warrior friends for their final battle in Asgard to depose Loki.

In Asgard, having lost control of the defeated warrior armor, Loki and the frost king begin to panic. The frost king is increasingly frustrated that Loki has been stalling about killing the still slumbering Odin. Realizing the opportunity to kill Odin grows short, the frost king makes his way to the sleeping monarach. Loki grabs Odin’s spear and uses it to attack the unsuspecting frost king just as he is about to kill Odin. Loki confesses to the dying frost king that he essentially did everything as a way to earn Odin's respect. He never intended to kill his father, he just wanted Thor out of the way so he could become the favored son for once. With the frost king dead, Loki turns his thoughts to the return of Thor. He grips the mighty Odin spear with both hands and prepares for his brother’s arrival.

In the transport chamber, Thor arrives but is surprised to find that Sif and the other three warriors aren’t with him. Heimdall lies on the floor unconcous. Suddenly Thor is ambushed by Loki who has been waiting for him. Loki states that even though it is impossible for either of them to kill the other, he will ensure Thor suffers by going to Earth himself and killing the new mortal woman he has developed feelings for. Upon hearing this, Thor uses his hammer to destroy the central console, the only way for Loki, or anyone, to get to Earth. The energies released by the destroyed console wreak havoc within the domed chamber. Loki races out of the building and Thor chases after him, resuming their battle outside on the bridge. The unchecked energies inside the great chamber cause a massive implosion. A swirling singularity erupts in its place and begins draw in everything in the vicinity. Thor and Loki both desparately grab onto the edge of the bridge, struggling to avoid being consumed by the swirling wormhole. Suddenly, Odin appears, finally awaken from his slumber, and reaches out to his two sons. Loki tells Odin that he "did this all for him" and Odin replies that he didn't want peace "like this." Loki realizes he failed his father once again and lets go of the bridge, allowing himself to fall into the collapsing wormhole just as it exhausts itself and disappears.

Back in the Asgard palace, all is well. We see Thor on what remains of the rainbow bridge asking the Gatekeeper what Jane Foster is doing back on Earth. Heimdall replies "She is searching for you."

Final shot of the film is of Natalie Portman, Kat Dennings and Stellan Skarsgård inside a room working on their science equipment.
