Ok in respect to your opinions and granted that you know the guys working on the show it's not pleasant to hear negatives criticisms about, but it comes with job. Some people will like it some will not. Maybe you didn't like the voice acting, but as far as I am concerned, I did, it was better than SSM. As I said, horrible animation was overshadowed by other aspects of the show. Both shows had their pros and cons, but my point is that TAS did a much better job with the restrictions they faced and since the bar had been set slightly higher these days I think SSM failed to reach its limits.

SSM had a better over all season, and is a better over all series. TAS kicked it's ass in the Venom saga, though.

Season 1 of SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN has been superior in every way to Season 1 of SPIDER-MAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES of some 14 years prior.

Some caveats: Elements and ideas of the 90's series were included in this one, and this series, unlike the 90's one, had a movie franchise and hind-sight to work with it. Frankly, it SHOULD be outdone by something done recently if it is done well, and SS-M is.

No question about it The Spectacular Spider-Man by a landslide. :woot:

I never saw TAS as a kid (although I loved Spidey). I only decided to watch it (the whole series) recently, around Christmas. After that I watched every episode of SSM. So I think I'm in a perfect position to objectively judge the two shows.

And I have to say SSM beats TAS in every conceivable way. Really, watching TAS at this age was mostly a chore. Really kiddy stuff, with awful dialog, pretty lame supporting cast and a villain of the week style. There were some very good episodes here and there (the symbiote saga was very well done), but mostly it was bad.

SSM on the other hand is maturely written. Great plots influenced by the Lee/Ditko and Lee/Romita days and an excellent (truly rich) supporting cast provide mature interactions that really pull you in. I don't really like the art style, but the animation is top-notch, smooth and lively. This really helps the show's fights, which -to top it all- are masterfully choreographed. The show's continuity gives the characters the chance to change and evolve, with varied interactions between them. Plus, little censorship.

So, no contest there. I don't mean to bash TAS, there were some very good elements there, but it seemed like it was trying to fit kids' standards. SSM is way more maturely and professionally handled, appealing to more age groups, and -ultimately- providing the fun and characters that Spider-man is supposed to offer (unlike recent comic runs).

great post man. I agree with you on your points between both shows.

The 1st season alone of SSM is better than the entire 90's show. Animation is better, writing is better and way more faithful to the comics. We actually had a good Venom fight. We got Sandman, a real bad guy in Tombstone and an awesome Rhino.

Yea it is a well made and produced show. For me i only had a few complaints about a few things that happened but still enjoyed it alot. As for the character designs some took awhile to get used to be they are good. Really the only thing in the character design well for the peter one is his nose it looks so odd looking compared to all the other noses characters have in the show.

It's time to vote. SSM Season 1 Vs. 90's TAS Season 1. Few thought that SSM would even compete with the 90's show before it came out, boy have opinions changed (including mine). So now it's time to choose. Which did you think was better plotted, dramatic, and overall most enjoyable, nostalgia aside.

I grew up with the animated series, and it was what sparked my intrest in spidey, originally Batman was my favorite super hero(since tas for him came out in 1992 and just before that BatMan and BatMan Returns were released) And I was really excited about the show. I had the play suit, the pajamas. and I even remember my first Spider-Man toy were figures from TAS(it was a 3 pack titled"maximum Carnage"
TripleThreatSpider-ManCarnageVenom.jpg
, and was used to celebrate the comic and the game). after a while though my interst in spidey began to fade, however i still liked him, it wasn't untill i went on the spidey ride at Islands of Adventure when i really, really got back into spidey again and became a big fan.

Ever since then I always thought TAS and the ride(which reminded me of the animated series0 were the coolest things in media that had to deal with spidey. TAS was inf act amazing. I loved the animation, the dialog, and the stroy. however looking back on it there were a few things i didn't like. some issues were never fully resolved(like did spidey ever find MJ, which Spider-Man Unlimited made it seems as if he did, however they never explained how) and there was way to much censorship by Fox the was enforced on TAS.

I still love TAS though. But with The Spectacular Spider-Man, the possibilities are endless. this shows lives up to it's name, and i'm sorry but it blows TAS waaaaaaay waaaaay out of the water. I don't know if i could say the animation style is better, seeing as how i pefer the type of animation used in TAS, Unlimited, and on the TV news reports in the ride, but the style of animation used in SS-M fits it rather well.

The dialog is much better and well written, the stroy and character development is amazing, the music is better(especially the theme song) and the fight scenes are mind-blowing.
Iam very pleased with The SS-M and i hope it continues for as long as the creative team behinds it wants it to continue. although when i first heard of a new spidey cartoon series coming out i was hoping for something similar to TAS and Unlimited, I was not dissapointed by this show and i doubt i will be dissapointed in the future.

"Spectacular, Spectacular, Spider-Man!!"
