The Jesus thing is one aspect I'm very tired of, but like Snyder said himself, they didn't create that, it's been there in his stories almost from the start. They didn't need to hammer it home yet again though, especially after SR like you mention.

But yes, the action and perhaps the overcompensation of it, is a direct result of the perceived failure of SR. Even still though, I've waited my whole life to see a live-action Superman that really looked like the comics & cartoons I grew up on. Needless to say I'm more than satisfied...

I've always wanted to see Supes beat some ass ..... There was a big time overcompensation in this one because of the lack of any punches thrown in SR. I can't sit there and say the fights were creative. After a while it was just the same thing. That's why I felt they coud've cut down the screen time of the grudge match.

In comparison to more recent films such as the Avengers or TDK its apples and oranges. It's all about your personal taste because I felt like Avengers could of been directed by Michael Bay with similar success and it would of been shot better. While other people think it's the greatest thing since slice bread. So in my personal opinion its the best movie of the summer by far and Superman is offically back as a movie franchise.

What i liked best about this movie is the fact they approached it as first contact event. That is one glaring hole in Avengers and all the Marvel movies that followed. Thor being an alien that vikings once worshiped as a God like something like that wouldn't change science and religion, literally there should be people worshiping Thor somewhere. However back to the Man of Steel it was a great movie that seemed to blow by so quickly which I think is a great thing for a movie over 2hrs long.I will give this movie easily 9/10.

I definitely like the "First Contact" theme, the search for your own origins/purpose ..... that stuff was fine. The problem for me personally became when it was speechified a myriad of times.

Not a review, but I did give it a 7.5/10. I thought it had great visuals, good and some great ideas, but the story glossed over too many details, plus the occasional plot hole and clunky dialogue, for me and should have been explored. Personally, I would have cut down on the Metropolis battle and skull scene to allot more time to explore certain details: The Daily Planet Clark Kent persona, Development of Minor Characters, Some Breathing Room Between Action Scenes. I would also liked to have seen Kryptonese spoken on film and Clark taking an interest in Journalism, but those are just my personal preferences. It seemed Goyer was less than enthusiastic to go into greater detail with Superman as he did with Batman, but that could have been Nolan's doing with BB.

Other than the final rate, I agree on everything. Senator Pleasury approves.

And as you say you don't have to go back again to Donner and the Jesus parallels but, even when they didn't create those, they did go back to them.

It is as I always thought. The Jesus parallels were never the problem but how much action is in the movie.

That is what had me most excited about this movie. But as long as Superman was approached and introduced to the world like this first, not his fellow Kryptonians.

The Smallville battle is my favorite, it's the first one and it's very kinetic, in a good way IMO. I also think the final showdown with Zod was very good precisely because I felt it was a little different, since it mostly took place in the air.

The World Engine thing could've been cut completely though, I would've much preferred a race against time scenario where the suspense comes from Superman getting there in enough time, as opposed to some mechanical wrestling match.

What difference does it make ? It seems like your trying to choose between the chicken and the egg. I think that works out best for him because he got to display his heroism and devotion to the preservation of human life.

And be witnessed by virtually no one.

The super in Superman is all that he can do that the rest of humans can't. Now the world knows that lots of aliens can do that, but they don't even know about Superman.

It felt like it provided the information and story almost 'bullet-point' style, but didn't immerse you personally. Especially the first debut of him in his suit, which felt almost matter-of-fact...followed immediately with him stumbling out of the gate while trying to fly. Again, perhaps some of that detached feeling that many had was part of the intent, but it was in many of the wrong places. Also probably not helped by the fact that it was more about fighting in Metropolis than saving, but that's the story they went with.

Matter of fact?

The joy of Superman discovering he could fly, the freedom, the exploration of his power...felt matter-of-fact to you?

He was saving the world via the fighting. They're not mutually exclusive concepts.

Smallville was pretty creative. Even the tentacle thingie was creative (doesn't make it good).

Metropolis started out spectacular, but got dull because it was the same thing over and over. It lacked emotional gravity and ingenuity.

I guess the next one can be more subtle overall, but with a more intense CLIMAX.

Um. Sorry, you just DISSED comics accidentally. A lot of Superman's rogues gallery come from outer space.

It absolutely did with the awkward pacing and abrupt transition (or lack thereof) to it. The film really missed out on cementing its signature heroic moment/debut for the new franchise there. It moved forward but didn't really resonate or get a good chance to be savored...which I feel could be said with much of the film.

Again, for some people they needed more specific acts of saving..I don't particularly think so, but I could see how the movie perhaps set him up as more of a warrior than hero by then.

In terms of the classic "helicopter" moment, I agree. I want that for the sequel.

Yeah, I never thought I'd be asking for a bit less action in a Superman film. I guess I'm still not, but if you're going to put that much in have more variety. One thing I loved though was how much he used his heat vision. :word:

Overall I liked the movie maybe a bit more than I expected to. Best Zach Snyder-directed film I've seen since Dawn of the Dead. Still need time to process it all a bit as I work it out in chunks on the forum, but for now I'd give an 8.

Some scenes I loved included the last of the Krypton scenes, the scenes in the ice with Lois, Kal-El flying after encountering "Jor-El", young Clark at school, Kal fighting Faora, Faora doing anything, and many others. There are some obvious problems that people have pointed out regarding editing and a controversial very Goyer/Nolany way to deal with the end of Zod and the overall death toll, but the movie, taken as a whole works for me. Yes, it's not as light as people who are pining for Donner and the ghost of Reeve to live on in this film might have liked, but I think it wouldn't have fit this material and we'll probably see that type of lighter fare in the sequel. It's more primed now that Clark himself is at the Daily Planet.

We are on the same page Magnar. It definitely helped that DotD is the only Snyder movie I really like, which kept my expectations fairly low. Better than I expected, but with all the caveats you mentioned.

What a condescending, self-serving and brain dead "article". Don't bother clicking on it.

And next time just take the time and energy to write your own thoughts instead of relying on random nobodies.

Plenty of eloquent posts on both sides in here without linking to unrepentant d-bags like that.

fighting isn't saving in their eyes...
they wanna see saving, saving and people expressing gratitude....

fighting is just a violent sport.

Second viewing is over and I'm raising my original review from 8.5 to a 9. What can I say? I walked out of the theater with a smile on my face and a want to see it again. I laughed, I cried, I watched in disbelief as the crazy action engulfed the screen. Things could've been done better here and there, but I can say that about every movie I see. All I know, and all that matters, is that I like it. I liked it a lot, and, judging from the crowd, they liked it, too.

finally saw it tonight man i was blown away and yeah i dont understand the critics i'll leave it at that

henry was amazing and i thought his whole journey and character of kal el/clark was done beautifully i loved the flash backs they were'nt too long but also not too short i was really emotionally invested in the character he was relatable but with flaws and had some depth to him

this may have had the greatest ending to a super hero film i have ever seen i teared up with flashback of johnathan watching young clark play with the cape aswell as johnathan's death scene was done very well i cred a bit there too

welcome to the planet was a beautiful double meaning line and great way to end the movie

also he is kinda hot got a funny reaction with a "yup" and a "uhhuh" reaction even from men lol:cwink:

9/10 for me bring on the sequel
