Guardians of the Galaxy To Infinity and Beyond: The Thanos Thread - Part 1

So apparently Thanos is not the villain in GotG2 and there is a chance he might not be in it at all.

I'll let Cornette summarize everything that I feel for the future of the MCU right now:

Who's doing the writing for Marvel Studios these days, Vince Russo? bwahahahahaha

Thanos hardly needs to be the main villain in Guardians 2 anyway

You make the Guardians look ineffective if they don't manage to stop Thanos

So that article has vanished... If Thanos isn't the villain in GotG2, that calls into question what exactly he is doing. He seems like such a non-threat right now, he needs some villainy time

As long as the films continue to be of a high quality, they can keep Thanos on the back burner until at least Avengers 3. Not a problem at all.

I think Magus and the Universal Church of Truth will be the villains.

Agreed; Gunn just made a great fun film and it wasn't great or fun because of Thanos (as nice as it was to see him) - Give the guy a little faith, he's earned it.

Think of it in terms of a franchise. Sure, the movies are high quality and all, but they're also part of a larger franchise and that's an aspect that shouldn't be neglected. Thanos is a deeply complex character and it would be unfair if all the substantial development he gets is in A3.

The Thanos Quest – November 3, 2017
Avengers 3: The Infinity Gauntlet- May 4, 2018

Brolin said he'll be in at least 3 more films. I'm sure he'll get plenty of dev. and as we know stingers don't count towards contract

Yeah I think it'll look like this.

1) Guardians of the Galaxy 2
2) The Thanos Quest
3) Avengers 3 (him vs the Avengers team)
4) Marvel's Infinity War (everyone vs Thanos)

This would be awesome. I would love to see Thanos Quest be its own film.

While seems unlikely, I would cry and my girlfriend would probably dump my ass for getting so...excited..for something :P

I'd love to see Thanos Quest. Marvel need to do something big and interesting with Thanos. We need to see the whys and hows of him. After all this time building him up as THE big bad he needs to be THE best villain of the MCU.

If it all ends up anti-climatic then Marvel will have a huge amount of egg on their face.

Hold on, people actually thought Thanos would be the main villain in GotG 2 with Avengers 3 just around the corner from it? Wow, okay.

No it wouldn't. If the Guardians were to appear in Avengers 3 to fight Thanos, why ruin the fun by having them doing the exact same thing in their own movie?

They don't have to epically FIGHT thanos in GOTG2 for him to be the big bad in GOTG2. nor do the guardians have to be in A3..nor do they have to fight even if they cameo A3.

These are a lot of assumptions..

GOTG2 can set up Thanos as the threat he should be...still be it's own story and yet..... lead into A3

So in theory.. what would they be fighting by the end if not the main villain in their own movie?

Well they could do something like have Magus and the Universal Church of Truth as the direct villains in the teams way while they try and pursue Thanos who's venturing around wiping out worlds to seize a couple gems.

I think something like this can still happen. Gunn only said Thanos will not be the villain.

Well Gunn kind of said he may not even be in the film at all, UNLESS they find something for him that makes sense, which is worrying. It potentially means another 2-3 minute appearance like the first movie, which would suck.

With my idea, Thanos could get maybe 20-30 minutes of screen time, which would be great.

Hell, with that general plot, the big guy gets positioned as the universal threat we know him as and becomes the guardians public enemy #1, but they can't get to him because Magus and the Church keep interfering. Eventually something will happen with Thanos and Magus to turn him back into Adam Warlock, and while Thanos leaves, Warlock teams with the Guardians to take out the Church of Truth in the third act.

No villains get 20-30 minutes of screen time.

Well The Joker did in TDK (33 mins) and it was one of the best movies of all time so why not. Maybe 30 minutes was too much, but even 10-15 mins would be great for Thanos in Guardians, and give Magus and the Church 20-25 mins.

I gotta be honest, when I saw it again last night, Thanos was far less imposing. Especially when he was on the phone to Ronan, he just said "oh don't do that", then seemed troubled by Ronan activating the stone... He should be more badass :/
