I'm not doubting Welling's talent but let's be real: he's kind of limited.
I think he's limited primarily because he's almost too good looking. That's not quite an "everyman" face. Then again, you could say the same of Cary Grant. As far as his acting chops, I think he could be amazing in movies if given more of a chance. After making the CBTD and Fog movies he was quoted as saying something to the effect of how great it was to have so much time to film just a few scenes on a movie set as opposed to something like SV, where they have to churn them out on a rushed schedule. He's been used to a
hell of a working schedule for a lot of years now, and he's only improved with each and every years. Given a great director and all that time to really hone a role, I think he'd surprise everyone - even is fans, with how good he'd be.
If he wanted that big payday and to make his name a household name, a Superman movie is the key and I'm sure WB would give it to him in a heartbeat.
Do you really think so? I don't know about that, but I hope you're right.
It just really sucks that so many of the loudmouth fanboys(and girls) who don't like SV will hold that against him as opposed to looking at the actor as an individual possibility for Superman.
Reposting something I posted over on B.T. - a quote from a very smart friend of mine that I thought was dead-on:
I fully believe that if Tom Welling had spent the past seven years on a TV show about, say, a fireman, the entire DC structure from fan to studio exec would be united in clamoring for him to play Superman. The Smallville powers-that-be got the casting exactly, entirely right for Clark, and he's "grown up" beautifully. Right now, he's Superman, absolutely perfect for the role. It's the show that complicates the casting decision.
Let's hope TPTB for this film are take note of Tom without the SV baggage.
(Not that I think it's negative baggage at all, but it's certainly a factor in casting him.)
