Tom Welling as Superman

Well then we are back a square one if its just welling and not connected to smallville. But we will just have to wait and see who the director is, writers, the plot, and who they are looking at for casting once wb makes the offical statement in a month or so on the upcoming dc slate.

There's a huge thread on B.T. about casting going on, and I already posted my mini-rant on why I don't think SV is necessarily negative baggage for Tom in terms of playing Superman.

But you know what? It doesn't matter. It's all about what playground you are posting in. FWIW, this is how I feel about it.

Here's why I don't think that the SV baggage is a big issue for Tom:

The general public, and even casual viewers, only know that there is a show about Superman on somewhere/sometime and this is the guy that plays Superman/Clark Kent. They couldn't possibly even name the supporting cast, let alone want them in a big screen movie.

The majority of die-hard SV fans, who for the most part are an extremely disagreeable bunch, do agree on one thing - Tom. They are a guaranteed ticket sale no matter what. Whether they do or don't want the rest of the cast in the movie (and I would bet most do NOT care either way) isn't really a factor since their numbers are a drop in the bucket.

The fanboys who hate the show with all their indignant fanboy passion would almost assuredly still see the film. After all, it's still a Superman movie.

Excuse me? Elitist much?

This is the "Tom Welling as Superman" thread. If one can't feel comfortable reveling about his fan's support here, something's fudged up.

I left this place months ago for many reasons. Sarcastic, mean spirited, and generally rude posts were at the top of the list.

Soooooo not farting around with this kind of indirect insult any more.

*plunk*

The hell you aren't! When someone does that, the only response it to come over the top and do exactly what they accused you of doing...times 10.

You get back here!

I still don't know how it's negative baggage? It's a show seen around the world with a big fan base. That's not negative baggage. It's only seen that way to small group of people who hundle together and complain about it. Personally I think of this group of people much like...

Waves to Pat...take a note...this is a veiled insult.

...the whiney emo kids at a high school. Just because there are 5 of them hudled together insulting everyone elso doesn't really mean the other 300 kids at school are that bad.

I agree.

Despite my embarrassing double negative above.
Here's why I don't think that the SV baggage isn't a big issue for Tom:

*corrects and facepalms*

Welling 37.1%
Reeve 29.9%
Routh 11.7%
Reeves 10.9%
Cain 10.4%

Have anyone here ever thought about getting Welling as :supes: Manip T shirts printed up?
I'm going to do it and wear it at next year's Comic-con.

You can bet that if WB can't find another actor for the reboot, Tom Welling will save the day, he won't reject a very generous offer.

here's hoping he becomes Superman (but I doubt it)

Good points, and its sort of ironic that the ones complaining about Tom's "negative baggage" are the same people who would have no issue with the same guy who was in the previous failed attempt at starting a franchise, starring in the new one. Now THAT's negative baggage...

I've remember reading somewhere, him saying something about a Superman typecast or whatever.....but good luck with that becuase he's already branded as Superman.

He wouldn't even take the Smallville role unless it was just about Clark kent. He doesn't want to wear the glasses(remember in season 7 how quickly he got them off for that episode?) and he doesn't want to wear the suit. They'll have to CGI it on him for the finale.

It's like he's a real Clark Kent in the sense that he doesn't want to accept his destiny as Superman(when actually he's playing Clark before the suit)

^Actually he didnt accept the Smallville role until he was able to read a script. He was first offered the role, only being told he'd be "playing Superman in high school." He said his intial fears based on that one sentence was that they were doing something campy like the Superboy series again. Once his agent got a hold of the actual script and saw what they were actually doing, he signed a few days later.

That story gets blown WAY out of proportion like he somehow had to be guilted into playing Superman. I dont know about you, but I wouldnt accept a job offer if all I knew about it was a once sentence summary of the position.

As for the glasses, he's worn them in 3 different episodes now (Whisper, Noir, and Veritas) so I'm not sure he's that opposed to them? I dont think I've heard him comment on wearing them or not

Well I wish the WB make an official announcement stating that Tom Welling have zero interest of ever portraying :supes: of any kind so I can let it the dream go.

Welling said in an interview with Carson Daly years ago that he could object to what they had him wearing in the show if he really didn't want to wear it. One of which were the glasses.

Here's my version of KillerBee's artwork. Just a few adjustments I'd make.

Are you referring to his appearance on the Late Night with Carson Daly show?

Or, an MTV appearance?

Tom's now up to 42%, Reeve is up to 2nd thankfully, and clown is down to 3rd with George Reeves not too far behind him. Common sense abounds, although when all is said and done Chris should be #1.

I'd be perfectly content with Christopher Reeve coming in first, and Tom coming in second. Or vice-versa.

I was just over there reading the comments. I should be more disgusted, I know, but I can't help but laugh at hilarity of it all.

Made a video on you tube to advertise the petition & promotions.
