Tom Welling as Superman

He's the worst kind of writer. He produces only what he thinks his audience will buy into.

I have never really believed that there is really any such thing as a completely objective review, so his opinions don't bother me, not really.

I don't agree with his opinions, but the problem is that I don't think he agrees with them either.

As for me, I love the show still and people sometimes question whether I'm sincere and whether I really believe what I've written.

I wouldn't have written it if I didn't believe it... sometimes I find out I made the wrong assumption based on what happened in the show, but at least at the time of the review, it was what I believed.

I don't think Neil does really have that level of committment to his own opinions.

I think it's been made clear by his writing for the official magazine for a show he seeminly detests that he's willing to sell his soul if the money is right.

He panders to his audience quite a bit, yes. I'm not sure how much of what he writes is true to the way he feels. But his readers eat it up, but that is mostly because they are all anti Smallville lemmings, whether it makes sense or not.

I don't mind when someone doesn't like the show, heck I have many friends who roll their eyes at me when I tell them I can't do anything Thursday, because my wife and I are watching Smallville. My problem comes from people who hate on the show, and when you ask for reasons, they either avoid the question with more hate, or just throw out generic "It changes the canon" answers. On top of that, most of these types of people then proceed to flood Smallville boards and verbally insult other people who genuenly enjoy the show. To make it worse, many of these haters CONTINUE to watch the show!

I don't think Neal is fully vested in what he writes, especially considering the amount of time he spends writing about the show.

Also an interesting side note: You should pop over and read his SR review one day. He praised that movie like crazy, even though it was full of the same exact things that he blasts Smallville for on a regular basis.

Just to see the consistancy.

/End Rant

Sorry :O

Then there's SV's new producer's desire to keep the show going as long as they can. I can't imagine making such a statement if they knew Welling was down the road at the end of this season.

Frankly, I could totally see Tom saying he's done and then the writers turning smallville's focus on supergirl, just to keep the show alive.

And if Singer is involved as a producer as rumors seem to indicate, I don't see him advocating Welling. Lets be realistic here.

If Singer were to get a producer credit on any new Superman film, it would be due to his previous contract and would be as hollow as the producer credit that Peters got on SR.

He'll have no input into the creative process of the film, he'll just be listed so he can get paid for it as part of whatever settlement to his pay or play that he and WB agree to.

It is especially funny considering how much he seems to dislike the show, the writing, and the general direction it takes. I don't have much experience with Younis though, so I can't say.

Be thankful for that, as it usually involves you getting yelled at and/or threatened with legal action.

This made me LOL, and it goes to further demonstrate how much less concerned about the whole Superman casting war thing some people are.

Here's a clip of Anne Thompson of Variety interviewing Kevin Smith about his new movie that Brandon makes a cameo in. Two people that are IN THE BIZ, big-time.

Not only does she think Brandon is, "Tom Wellington," but when he corrects her, they both mispronounce "Routh." :D

It's at about the 12:25 mark, if you don't want to hear the whole thing.

^ this has almost gotten boring. Would be something for Welling to even come close in a pro-Routh, pro-SR site like that. I've heard that you get banned over there if you speak ill of SR on their forums.

I'd be much more converned with polls in places that aren't fanboy hang-outs like the ones on MSNBC, USA Today, etc.

Wow. Is that jealousy I detect?

That poll is as fair as it gets, even though it's a fan site. Membership is mandatory, and you're permitted only one vote.

The USA Today poll, although anyone can participate, is nothing more than percentage points. No straight figures. If they placed the same restriction on voting that the Homepage did, I think the numbers between Reeve, Routh, and Welling would be a lot closer. But such is life.

Thanks for the link, that was hillarious!

Yes Tom Wellington is the Dark Knight.

Guess that could only help his chances of landing the reboot with it's new dark direction.

Classic moment considering all of the online back and forth about these two actors.

What an AWESOME! interview!!!

Thanks for posting that, and it seems like even a small part in a Kevin Smith film might be good for Brandon Ruth.... err.. Routh.

I love Kevin Smith as a film maker, but sometimes he can come off as an arrogant ass. I liked him better in this interview than I think I have in a long time, even though he can't even pronounce one of his actor's names.

Reminds me of how some people mispronounce my last name, Hooten Howton, Huegton...

Gah! Annoying....

Anyway, Anne asked some terrific questions, even if she can't tell Tom apart from Brandon....

No way in hell she can't tell them apart. Maybe this was her way of a joke but......I just think she's jobbing dude. I'm hoping that either Routh or Welling is cast, preferably Welling becuase its going to only get uglier if a 3rd party is introduced. Can you imagine how odd it would be if Routh or Welling actually met?.......or if Routh showed up on Smallville?

No, I think she was sincere in her cluelessness. She seemed genuinely embarrassed.

Not everyone knows who Brandon is, or even (*gasp*) who Tom is...

You'd be surprised how many people get the two confused.

People might be right that the general public probably doesn't really care who plays Superman on the big screen, as long as the film tells a good story and the actor who plays him is generally well cast.

Look at RD Jr, he was largely unknown outside of art house films prior to Iron Man, now he's making the second one and is asking a hell of a lot more per film than he used to.

SR didn't fail because Tom didn't get the part, although Brandon getting cast solely for his looks despite the fact the he wasn't right for the part otherwise certainly didn't help. It failed (you know, for not coming anywhere close to what the film was supposed to make), because the story wasn't at all fun.

Iron Man, a little known Superhero, made tons despite no one really knowing who the hell he is, because the film was fun and exciting, instead of being a downer and being boring, and Robert Downey Jr was perfect for the part....

Didn't most people know who Robert Downey was before Iron Man? though kids and teens may not know maybe

You think a lot of people saw Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang, Good Night and Good Luck and a Scanner Darkly?

I don't think so...

I loved some of his earlier work, Restoration was under rated and of course he was brilliant in Chaplin and I LOVED him in Soapdish, but aside from his drug habit, had he really been well known for his film roles?

Bingo! I don't think this (that) will ever change. It's not going to matter what director they get; every director wants to make their own statement. A studio could insist on a certain actor or actors, but if the director doesn't want "X" or "Y," they can't be forced to cast those individuals. And the studio could veto a director's choice(s) as well.

I see Cavill is back in the fan-casting suggestion box, along with Cavs and Webster. How original.

It's all so 2004, all over again. *Face palm*

At this point, I think folks need to put the Welling dream to bed. Any director charged with rebooting Superman is going to want their own flyboy. They're not going to want one that's pre-established, which includes Routh *or* Welling. And despite the fact that G&M are no longer attached to SV, I think they'd still be a road block for Welling playing Superman in a film. $$$

And if Singer is involved as a producer as rumors seem to indicate, I don't see him advocating Welling. Lets be realistic here.

Then there's SV's new producer's desire to keep the show going as long as they can. I can't imagine making such a statement if they knew Welling was down the road at the end of this season. The man makes 150k/episode and he loves playing Clark. To my knowledge, he's never made any statements about wanting to leave the show, unlike Kreuk and Rosenbaum. He must be leaving his options open with them, otherwise we'd be seeing ads for S8 (ala S5) "Everything you wanted to see..."

TW will always be my Superman, and I believe he is this generation's Superman as well, but Warner Bros. painted themselves into a deep, dark corner with SR. Routh was forgettable at best, no thanks to Singer's poor decision to requil Donner. Now the fanbase will be splintered not just two but three ways going forward. Even Cocacola didn't have that problem. It doesn't surprise me that Warners isn't quite sure about how to proceed...

Was a fun read though, wasn't it? :D

Agreed. A director will always want to bring his vision, his story to the character. Being a film, the director assumes the lead in these kind of projects instead of TV where the executive producers assume the lead.

Cavill, Welling? 2004 all over again...? What a deja vu.

I like Cavill; I've seen before in several features along with the Tudors. He's a good actor and he does have the looks. However if I knew Welling was going to be Superman in next movie, I would be thrilled.

I'm sure WB will have to wait Smallville to end and SR being a distant memory if they wish to reset...everything.

If Smallville does have a 9th season (it's a possibility), I don't expect a Superman movie until 2011 or 2012 at best, assuming they want everything new. In fact, I'm expecting the movie to be released in 2013 when Superman celebrates its 75th anniversary.

Wow. Is that jealousy I detect?

No jealousy would be if I was constantly monitoring what people in Brandon Routh threads on Superman Returns forums were saying and chiming in ocassionally with catty little quips. Sound familiar?

You're missing the point, which I should come to expect by now. The poll format really matters little, it's the cross-section of people who are visiting a given site and their inherent biases. SMHP is a fan site, one who is extremely biased towards SR given it's webmaster. It's like me saying the same poll on Kryptonsite or Sweet or one of the countless other Welling leaning sites is as "fair as it gets." The fact that you have to register an account to vote is irrelevant. As if anyone wanted to, they could register free email addresses on Yahoo, Hotmail, etc. and have multiple accounts. People have done that at SHH all the time. Not saying that is whats happening but it can be done.

I dont see how you can say a site like USA Today or MSNBC that probably gets about 1000 times the web traffic that SMHP does is "less fair" because you can vote multiple times from different computers? The effect of the number of people who are die-hard enough fans to do something like that is likely so statistically irrelevant when compated to the overall number of people voting. But hey, you believe what you want to believe.

I believe sites like USA Today or MSNBC polls are indeed bias free and the results are more reliable when gauging the market place.

Sort of how WB kicked Burton to the curb after Batman Returns but kept him on as a "producer" on Batman Forever, even though Burton had absolutely nothing to do with that movie.

Oh come on. A poll on smhp would be like putting a poll on a smallville site. You can't get more biased than that.

Yea but being its SHP their posters are going to pick routh to be the winner of their pole.

No, you don't. People over there are free to express their opinions, as long as they are not insulting to others. Go take a look at the forums and see for yourself.

LOL. Of course not. Judging by that sad petition in your sig i can see how you'd be completely unbiased in the matter.

The people that run SMHP are pretty much nuts. If you don't believe me, perhaps I can regale you with the tale of how they attacked Bluetights.net out of petty jealousy over not getting Singer's video blogs. Maybe that would get your attention?

The funny thing BRB peeps actually think winning the poll on SMHP will get the WB's attention and make them use Routh.

A few sites gave BT crap for it, the hype banned BT and others related because of BT's link to Singer too. Frankly, I'd like to know what's so great about SMHP, its a bit cheesy and needs to a new look or something.

A majority of the fans there are pro-routh and liked SR. The guy who runs the site does as well, so the outcome is quite obvious, and despite LL2K2's delusions, not even close to an unbiased poll.
