Too CGI heavy?

I notice shaky cam instantly and it annoys the hell out of me. I can't stand any director that uses it and especially the ones who abuse it. The camera was even shaking when Clark and Jonathan were just standing there having a normal conversation. How does shaking the camera add to the conversation? And what value does it add to an action scene or a fight scene? Combine it with hyper-editing and it creates an incoherent mess on the screen.

This is what ruined the film for me, it kept making me lose focus on the story. Felt like I was watching something recorded on an iphone.

^ Tell that to Bruce Timm. He's an awesome creative mind, but that moment makes me cringe!

That's why the action sequences in MOS are good for the character. Superman's biblical level of power is big part of his appeal. A side of which outside of a handful of moments across various media (What's so funny about Truth, Justice and The American Way?, the last ep of JLU, and some of the DTV films) has not been given enough exposure. There is not a viewer who won't understand that he is a force to not be trifled with lightly.

During my 2 showings, I brought a total of 17 people with me, and not one person mentioned to much CGI or that it looked to cartoonish.

I personally had no problem with it, this is a comicbook movie, I thought snyder did a great job making it look and feel like one.

17 people? Somebody is doing their part big time, thank Rao!

The only thing I've gotten out of this thread are the amazing gifs that are supposedly horrible CGI :yay:

Shaky cam doesn't bother me, I didn't even notice it after the kryptonian council scenes, but I can see how it could bother other people.

''Shaky cam" is a head scratcher of a complaint to me as well. The level of detail in the SFX is one of the great pleasures I got out of the film's visuals. I would not have been able to notice that if this films camera work were as blurry as some seem to suggest.

The CGI allowed them to actually display a Superman level battle accurately. Without using cheesy camera cutways tricks when someone gets thrown a long distance or punched along distance.

Yep, and the messed up part is I payed for everyones ticket but one person! Lol I brought 7 the first showing and 12 the second showing, but 2 people wanted to see it again from the first showing, so I bought them tickets again. :) I'm trina get WOM out as you can kinda tell! Haha

Well said, The shaky cam has been used to transition cg with real life shots . For example placing henry cavills face on a cgi double and Foara knocking him in to a wall , when the camera zooms and shakes you then see the real shot of henry back against the wall then when he goes too fly towards her the camera shakes again to blend it to a full cgi superman. This technique is used all the time.

Take for example blade 2 they used that so much especially the scene where blade(cgi) gets an uppercut from nomack and when he hits the wall the camera shakes to transition to the real blade.

Whats the two things they have in common?

I think some people do not really understand that Superman doesn't do things small. There isn't some nice damage. Metropolis better be left rubble that's how powerful these guys are.

I guess some folks just aren't ready for the real Superman.

You took the words outta my mouth.....:whatever:

I'm normally one of the first people to call out films for poor or overabundant CGI. MoS was fine IMO, hell, the CGI was even better than I expected it to be based on all the trailers. Sure some close ups of Zod and Supes could have been better, but it doesn't warrant any damnation in my eyes.

The shaky cam only bothered me early on but I adjusted after that. CG was good IMO. Amount of wanton destruction a little bit much for me.

The truth of the matter is that there are those (haters) who have turned the acronym CGI into a code word for "bad movie" and that really is sad. The truth of the matter is that almost all films made today use some type of CGI. We just don't notice it. If were were to go back to the old way of doing things not only would the quality of the films would be lacking, but also the production costs would go up. Let's not be foolish here. There is no such thing as "CGI heavy".

While some parts to me, (bits of the Smallville fight or the final fight with Zod), looked like a complete video game, and the characters looked like cartoons, overall the CGI and visuals were impressive. I just wish the destruction was scaled back so the plot had more time to develop. I felt like the 2nd act was sacrificed for a large, action-stuffed, disaster-filled climax.

In the books, even in the books from the 40s, this is the amount of damage that would take place in his fights.

The only CGI that really bothered me was the over use of it for character doubles. There were many places where they could have replicated plenty of it with the actual actors. However, over all, the non humanoid CGI, especially on Krypton, I thought was rather impressive.

The hand held, over all I didn't mind, but there there were definitely some shots, and some whole scenes, where it was TOO loose/shaky, and really should have been shot with some more stabilization.

Some VG's look better than the real thing.

Sadly they do. Might as well hire the people who do THOSE cinematics to do the action for Man of Steel. However I was referring to not the amazingly detailed cinematics we get today, but just simply in-game graphics themselves. A lot of it looked like two cartoons bouncing through walls to me.

The shaky cams didn't bother me at all. Didn't even notice actually haha. Maybe a tiny bit in Smallville battle but yeah.

Most games today have much better action sequences than most action movies these days.

the shaky cam didn't bother me, didn't notice it much to be honest. Some of the CGI was noticeable but not a big deal...it is a very well put together film

The CG stunt doubles doesn't works very well in the fight scenes and I HATED the cartoonish-looking CG capes.

CGI in this film is some of the best I've seen... love it and wouldn't change a thing. You could not do those scenes without CGI... MOS is my all time favorite CBM now...

I find nothing wrong with those two gifs at all. There were a few times where I noticed Henry's cg face but to say it looked like a cartoon hahaha no just no. That is a ridiculously huge overexaggeration.
