Torchwood

It's pretty outrageous. Are the Americans still so outraged by the idea of homosexuality? Are they still not willing to admit it exists?

Yup, pretty much...and hell with Jack being Omnisexual, well that would just blow our minds:wow::awesome:

The site with the article finally came back up

John Barrowman has said that he doesn't want his Torchwood character's sexuality to be reversed in the US version.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the American remake of Torchwood has plans to make his Captain Jack role straight.

"I hope wherever [the franchise] goes that the show stays the same," said the actor.

"The last thing I would want would be for Jack to become this heterosexual, straight hero. He's an omnisexual guy. He likes men, women, aliens, whatever. I think we should continue going down that route."

The star added that any effort to change Captain Jack's sexual orientation would need to involve a "big discussion" between creator Russell T Davies and his producing partner Julie Gardner.

As for additional information about the spinoff, Barrowman claimed that he only knows what has already been reported, including that Fox has commissioned Davies to write the pilot.

Russell T Davies, the guy who made Queer As Folk, will agree to making Captain Jack straight? No way.

I certainly hope not. The last thing Captain jack should be is boring.

He should be snogging everything in sight!

Maybe Torchwood should be adapted for an American cable network instead. Fox might take issue with Jack being everythingunderthesun-sexual, but I bet FX (Fox's cable counterpart) would let them get away with it. The FCC and broadcast TV still have a problem with homosexuality, but cable TV is totally self-regulated. Fox airs stuff on FX they'd never air on the regular Fox network (and in a fit of irony, Fox News complains about such programming bringing down our society. It's a complicated franchise).

I've seen this talked about on 3 boards but no one mentions that FOX has Thirteen from "HOUSE M.D" the resident bisexual doctor.

So what's their problem with Jack?

If they make Captain Jack straight then he'd be just like every other leading man in American television.

At the very least, Fox could compromise. Keep Jack the way he is, but we never see him with a (human) man. Just women and aliens. It's still taking away from the character, but if that's what it takes to get him across the pond relatively intact...

I want another series of the British Torchwood... Thats why i pay my TV licence you BBC Basterds!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :cmad:

And we in the States thank you for doing so. :D

But, yeah, I want to know how they recover from Children of Earth. Especially since they've said we won't seen any guest stars in the upcoming Who episodes.

Simple: Torchwood becomes a Captain Jack show. Let Gwen and Rhys finally get married and pregnant and whatever and have Jack run around Earth saving hot (insert species and gender here) and generally being awesome.

I wouldn't mind Gwen and Rhys being gone. After what happened, they've probably had enough.

But I don't think I'd want to see Jack just run around on his own for a whole season. But, maybe he spends the first half of the episodes putting together a new team. People he's been staking out ever since he last saw Tennant. All the while, some big thing is building in the background while they deal with smaller things and get acclimated to the team. Might even be able to squeeze in a guest spot by Gwen or two (one being in the first episode).

That'd work too. I was thinking more of a Captain Jack = Captain Kirk vibe, but I guess he could use a group backing him up.

Just saw that the BBC's ordered a sixth series of Doctor Who.

And we haven't even gotten Smith's first series here yet. :p

Yeah, but he didn't need them to bang green chicks and punch Klingons in the jaw. :awesome:

I imagine we'll just get an american version of Gwen Cooper to be the "link" to the normal world. Or Torchwood 4 is finally found, and Jack joins them.

us version will probably mean no captain jack in who, but it could be massive. better cgi, better aliens, better team. off world missions and possibly return of james marsters

Moffat would only do Series 5 if Series 6 was commissioned or so I heard.

This part of the US Torchwood article is old but I didn't see it mentioned

Fox developing U.S. version of 'Torchwood'
Original producing team on board to adapt U.K. series

"Torchwood"

Huge news for sci-fi fans: Fox is developing a stateside version of the U.K. hit series "Torchwood."

The project is from BBC Worldwide Prods., with original series creator Russell Davies writing the script.

A more straight-faced spinoff of "Doctor Who," "Torchwood" is about a covert group that investigates and fights alien activity. Two series aired domestically on BBC America as well as last year's well reviewed stand-alone miniseries, "Children of Earth," which broke all ratings records for the network.

Unlike U.S. adaptations that have gone awry, "Torchwood" fans can take comfort that the original producing team is on board. In addition to Davies, exec producers include Davies' producing partner Julie Gardner (former head of drama at BBC Wales for the show's first season) and Jane Tranter (another BBC vet, now exec vp programming and production at BBC Worldwide Prods. in the U.S.).

Also, some of the current cast -- most likely John Barrowman, who plays the immortal Capt. Jack Harkness -- might star if Fox orders "Torchwood" to pilot.

As for the new show's plot, the U.S. version will contain a global story line compared to the more localized sensibility of the first two BBC seasons.

Tranter might try to reboot "Doctor Who" for U.S. audiences while departing "Doctor Who" star David Tennant stars in NBC's pilot "Rex Is Not Your Lawyer." "Torchwood" (which is an anagram of "Doctor Who") debuted in 2006 on BBC 3 and set ratings records, then was moved to BBC 1. Russell also reinvented "Doctor Who" in 2003 and was writer-creator of the series "Queer as Folk."
