I know this is a little off track with what we've been talking about, but how responsible for his actions do you consider Leland to be? There seems to be a consensus that Bob didn't make Leland do every evil act. Like for example, there's the belief that Leland was in control of himself when he slept with Teresa Banks and then later murdered her to stop her from blackmailing him. And then there's Leland saying to Laura "I thought you knew it was me" in the train car, which implies that Leland was speaking for himself then since it's his face that Laura sees.
I know it oversimplifies things to say Leland is a good person and a demon made him do every evil thing he did in his life, but if Leland is raping and murdering girls of his own volition, what is the point in the Bob storyline? I get that it's a metaphor for sexual abuse and people having inner demons, but within the universe of Twin Peaks, the supernatural and demonic possession is very real.
My take is that yeah, Leland did do some evil things while in control, but a lot of his personality may have been influenced by Bob's possession of him in an indirect way. I mean, if Leland was first possessed when he was 8 years old, it really must have emotionally scarred him in unimaginable ways. And after being possessed for so long, the line between Leland and Bob was blurred, and Leland began taking on some of Bob's evil traits just because Leland's mind and body "remembered" those desires.
Also, in some instances, Bob may not have been 100% in control, but I'm sure he has the capability of subconsciously manipulating Leland's actions and desires, like in the "Wash your hands!" scene in FWWM. I think those are things that Leland remembers afterwards, but doesn't understand why he felt the way he did and why he said and did those cruel things, which explains why he started crying in the scene after and went to Laura's room to tell her he loves her. If he didn't remember any of it, then that would make for some serious discontinuity in his life and maybe arouse suspicion if someone mentions something he did and he's like "I don't remember any of that".
This is also why I think Bob was mostly responsible for Teresa's death. He had a reason to want to prevent people from finding out about Leland's secret life. If Leland is caught and sent to prison, then Bob doesn't get to use Leland for pleasure and garmonbozia. And like with Laura and Maddie, he put a piece of paper with a letter from Robert/Bob's name under her fingernail. Why would Leland do this? It seems more like a Bob thing to do that.
