The Winter Soldier Update the outfit for next solo film

I never understood the fundamentalist approach to translating comic book costumes onto the big screen. If Marvel had taken that approach to Thor, he would have looked absolutely ridiculous (thankfully, the yellow boots, yellow belt, blue tights, and real-feathered helmet were discarded in favor of a much more believable outfit).

Now when it comes to Captain America, I don't see why any special standard should apply. A man running around on covert missions in a bright red and blue suit is silly. The traditional costume was an important part of the story in TFA, and to some degree also in TA - but now when it comes to TWS, when Steve is not being used for WW2 propaganda or to create hope/nostalgia in a battle, it makes perfect sense that they would redesign the suit and make it more functional.
The thing is, this IS a suit from the comics. people are acting like they created a brand new design when its from the comic, from around the same period in the comics the movie is based on.

But...I thought I wasn't a real fan....this ish is so funny.

Nobody's saying this isn't based on a suit from the comics
just the wrong suit

and it's not from the "same period", it's from well after Winter Soldier, after cap died, after bucky took over, and after Cap was reborn

there are story beats that got him into that costume which this movie won't be able to cover

It's really not the wrong suit. What would have been the wrong suit is the bright red and white on covert spy missions.

When I first said i wanted this suit a couple months back, it was because wearing the traditional suit as a SHIELD spy/agent didn't make any sense. He'll probably go back to the traditional suit in the Avengers 2, where it makes sense.

Do you think this suit is meant to replace his "traditional" Captain America suit? And if so are you okay with that? Or rather, do you prefer that?

Well, in the comics during this dark and gritty espionage story, he was wearing the red white and blue

and never did I think "oh this is ridiculous, how can't the spies see him?! He should be wearing a dark version of his costume"

If anything it was the juxtaposition I found so unique

This obviously isn't a "replacement" of Cap's traditional suit, since we've already seen that before and will again. The Captain Rogers suit is simply better suited to covert missions than the bright red-white-and-blue one would be. The traditional suit also shows up in official concept art, so it's sure to be used.

Yeah well, maybe he has the Avengers suit before the whole SHIELD schism thats set to take place in the film

Then, I pray, he'll have it back by the end

Do I think it's replacing the traditional suit? No, the traditional suit will definitely be back in Avengers 2 and maybe even towards the end of this film. This movie is a spy film, it makes no sense for Steve to wear a suit with bright red and white in it for most of the movie. As you said yourself, the traditional Cap suit is meant to be used as a symbol, but he has no need nor business using that suit on covert missions, out of the eyes of the public. For most of the film he will probably be more or less be Agent Rogers.

That said, would I mind if this suit replaces the traditional one in the films? Not really, I like the more practical look and makes more sense in the modern world and is a nice updated look. Maybe put a bit more red and white somewhere, but that's it.

Ok then we agree on this. I'm completely okay with the suit being used in the film. And I never said you weren't a real fan if you wanted him to wear his Agent Rogers suit. I can't find the quote, but in essence I said that the people who are fans of Captain America (The people who grew up reading Captain America comics) want him to wear his traditional Captain America suit in some form or it's not Captain America. I stand by that. I like the Agent Rogers suit, but at the same time just because they slapped on the helmet doesn't make it Captain America, he's still Agent Rogers.

If you don't know the difference between Steve Rodgers: Super Soldier, and Captain America, then no, you are not a real fan. That's like not knowing the difference between Bucky and the Winter Soldier, or Captain America and Nomad :)

This I agree with, though I don't know if this will be a full on Spy movie, infact I hope it isn't. I hope we Cap back in action as Cap at the end.

Anyone else thinks it looks like this? Black pants, gloves, boots, belt and all:

Wasn't referring to you, it was peterparker0077. I brought up using a varient on the Agent Rogers suit, and one or two people agreed with me, then he said we didn't like Captain America because we wanted the Agent Rogers suit for the film.

The movie is basically a SHIELD movie. The entire supporting cast are SHIELD agents and Cap is working for SHIELD. The antagonists are a bunch of wet-works assassins and mercs, it looks VERY likely that they're going to do a take on the Nick Fury vs. SHIELD storyline...and most of the film seems to take place in Washington DC. Suffice to say, this is definitely looking like a political thriller spy film.

Not really, it just looks like the Agent Rogers suit with more padding and a helmet. The pants also aren't black.

It looks like from the most recent shot of Cap from behind that his pants are baggier or have pockets now....hmm...that's a huge difference from the current modern film version of Cap we saw in avengers.

They are seemingly a different color than above the belt. And I should clarify, does anyone else think it looks like it could be BASED off Bucky Cap's outfit?

I think it looks more like Bucky Cap than Agent Rogers.

I didn't say you didn't like Captain America, I said you weren't a fan. Again, if you don't know the difference between the suits, I don't think you are a serious fan. :) But, if your second paragraph is correct, then why is this called a Captain America movie? And not a Shield movie? That doesn't make sense.

What makes you say that? I see nothing that looks like the Bucky Cap suit.

You know, the Bucky Cap suit always looks unfinished to me. Like Alex Ross designed the torso and then called it a day.

I've felt that way as well. It's like they got to the pants, couldn't decide what to do there, and just left it plain.

I will say, I like the outfit, but the helmet is rather out of place for it.
