I've been waiting for some kind of Sherlock Holmes revival!

I'll say it again...

We've had:

The super cool mega rational Holmes (heh Rathbone)
The very faithul, yet a bit neurotic Holmes (Brett)
The rational, very underrated and awesome Holmes (Cushing)
The junkie Holmes (Williamson)
The drunken, hilarious Holmes (Caine)
The sophisticated and obviously gay Holmes (Stephens)
The warm and caring Holmes (Plummer)
Etc...

So what's wrong with a badass, adventurer Holmes? Pretty much all of the movies characterizations have varied in some aspect or another (except Brett I guess, and even him I found a bit too neurotic for Holmes), and after all, the guy was a great boxer, wrestler and fencer, so I can totally get behind this.

Elementary, My Dear Stark
Iron Man eyed for Sherlock Holmes?
by Jim Vejvoda

US, June 11, 2008 - With Iron Man still raking it in at the box office, the film's star, Robert Downey Jr., has gone from being box office poison a few years ago to a bonafide draw. Downey is reportedly being eyed for a number of high-profile projects now in the works.

According to Entertainment Weekly's Hollywood Insider Blog, Downey is not only being wooed to portray Playboy founder Hugh Hefner in a Brett Ratner-directed biopic, but also for Gary Ross' Dog Years and Fox's detective pic Travis McGee.

But the most genre-friendly project that Downey is said to be looking at is the Guy Ritchie-directed Sherlock Holmes film set up at Warner Bros. EW didn't specify whether Downey was up for the title role or perhaps his partner Dr. Watson or adversary Professor Moriarty. Given that he can now open a movie in his own right, it would seem likely that Downey is mulling the role of the world's greatest detective.

I saw the RDJ report....could be interesting...offers sound like there flowing in.

So basically they want him to be Holmes and Hugh Hefner? I think Iron Man suddenly made Hollywood realize that Downey has been a gem all this time.

His years battling alcohol and drugs almost killed his career. People always knew he was a great actor.

RDJ wouldn't be my 1st choice as Mr. Holmes. But if he does accept the role, i hope it doesn't have any ill effect on the filming for the sequels for Iron Man.

I've heard about this from a few sources, including talk that Sherlock's classic deerstalker and pipe will be ditched for this movie...

Anyone know any more about the look of Sherlock in the upcoming comicbook or this movie?

Well Conan Doyle never actully wrote Holmes wore a Deerstalker hat in any of the stories although Sidney Paget had drawn Holmes wearing one a couple of times.

I've never thought of RDJ as Sherlock Holmes, but holy ****, my ass will be in the theater seat if he's cast.

Wow I love ADJ, he was just brilliant as Tony Stark/Iron Man. I hope he can pull off Sherlock Homes, he is one of my all times fav classic storys. I really hope they don't mess up the movie and make his character all crazy, all and all I'm def going to see it.

I dont want to sound like a prude or anything, but, like James Bond, I really only want to see Sherlock Holmes portrayed by a British actor, or someone descending from the UK. Just my opinion.

Well, British doesn't matter as long as they can do a British accent. (For instance, Mohinder in Heroes isn't English and he does a very good accent, he had me fooled for ages until i heard him speak on a behind-the-scenes show).

Sendhil Ramamurthy who plays Mohinder has lived in the UK and went acting school in London. He was also in a few West End productions and in British shows like Casulaty and Ultimate Force so it doesn't really surprise me he can do a British accent.

Actually, living in the UK isn't a prerequisite either. For anyone who watched Angel, they'd know that Alexis Denisof (who played Wesley) had a pretty decent accent as well. Come to think of it, if they really are going with a Bond-esque version of the character, Denisof would make a great candidate for Holmes.

Well, considering all the brits that have played americans over the years, I think you guys owe us this one. :o Bridget Jones doesn't count...that was just awful.

Well an American actor Barry Nelson played Bond first in the television adaptation of Casion Royale in the 50s.

If American actors actully learned to do a British accent and by that I don't mean rent a couple Hugh Grant movies and mimic his accent most people would be fine.

To be honest the american actors that usually do the best British accents are the ones who have lived, worked, went to drama school, spent sometime in Britain or dated someone British. Usually Anglophiles or people who take an intrest in British culture (film, music, tv, history, society ect)
are best at it.

i am fine with them making sherlock holmes into a movie. its the reimagining thing that has me worried. that word has a tendency to ruin movies, and where Holmes is my favorite fictional character I really don't want hollywood trash attached to his reputation.

Variety said:
Downey Jr. set for 'Sherlock Holmes'
'Iron Man' actor cast in WB, Guy Ritchie drama

In what will be his first job since the blockbuster "Iron Man," Robert Downey Jr. is set to star in "Sherlock Holmes," the drama that Guy Ritchie will direct for Warner Bros.
Downey committed to the pic, which begins shooting in October, after Ritchie turned in a polish of a script written by Anthony Peckham.

Lionel Wigram and Dan Lin are producing with Susan Downey and Joel Silver will be executive producer.

Much the way that "Iron Man" launched Downey as an action star, "Sherlock Holmes" will also take advantage of his physical skills as the character displays brawn as well as brains.

The basis for the film is Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's classic tales, but also the comicbook "Sherlock Holmes."

With Downey aboard, the film will go into production before a comedy that just coalesced at Columbia Pictures, with Sacha Baron Cohen playing Holmes, and Will Ferrell playing his crime-fighting partner, Dr. Watson.

If WB sticks with its projected 2010 date for "Sherlock Holmes," the timing could be close, as Columbia is fast tracking its project, which is being written by Etan Cohen ("Tropic Thunder") and produced by Judd Apatow and Jimmy Miller.

Downey will next be seen in "Tropic Thunder," and then stars with Jamie Foxx in the Joe Wright-directed "The Soloist" for DreamWorks. He's repped by CAA.

Nice casting.

Guy Ritchie and Robert Downey Junior? Great team-up. Can't wait to see who else joins.

:applaud Love the casting and the October start! Favs for Watson. :oldrazz:
