You should laugh at this one as well.....

The Flicks of Summer
Car chases, stunts, explosions, oh my: As usual, the summer film season is about crowd-pleasing, not brain-teasing. But movie lovers on the lookout will find some well-crafted thrills and a few thinkers among the stinkers.

The buzz : The combination of conspiracy theory (The Da Vinci Code) and Indiana Jones-like adventure could be the season’s biggest cash cow , rivaling only June’s entry of Superman Returns .

MAN OF GOLD : In print, movies or television, no other superhero has brought in as much gold as the Man of Steel . He’s back in Superman Returns (June 30) picking up where Superman II (1980) left off, with our hero now played by newly muscled newcomer Brandon Routh.

The buzz : Is good. Bryan Singer (The Usual Suspects, X-Men) writes and directs, and many are looking forward to seeing Kevin Spacey play Lex Luthor.

I want to finish The Da Vinci code before I read see the movie, so I am reading that, which I bought first today. I do not want to skip to the end of the book and spoil it for myself so others can have spoilers. That is the honest to god reason I am not.

What if they all FLOP...that would be hilarious? :O

If Superman Returns, POTC2, The Da Vinci Code, MI:3 and practically everything flops this summer, we will enter a state of block busters going straight to DVD.

Well, I like this guy's opinion. He has a very interesting title in the field he works. I mean, he must know a lot about box office.....

Paul Degarabedian, president of Box Office Exhibitor Relations.

Superman Takes On Mona Lisa

This summer at the box office looks like a showdown between a superhero in blue tights and Tom Hanks with crazy hair — with some mutants, pirates and Tom Cruise tossed in for a little flavor.

With hugely anticipated hits such as "The Da Vinci Code" (May 19) and a new Superman movie (June 30), the 2006 summer movie season is looking to sweep away memories of one of the flattest warm-weather box office showings in a decade last year.

"Things are looking much better than 2005, with momentum moving into this summer," said Paul Degarabedian, president of Box Office Exhibitor Relations. "This time last year we were heading into what really ended up being quite a slump — it was the worst summer in many, many years."

And while "Superman Returns" and "Da Vinci" may be the biggest names, there are several other dogs in the fight to be the No. 1 summer blockbuster, like this Friday's "Mission: Impossible III," "X-Men: The Last Stand" (May 26) and "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" (July 7).

........

However, Degarabedian said "Superman Returns" will fly away with the No. 1 summer movie title.

"Superman is such a well-known character and Warner Bros. did such a great job of bringing the Batman character back already," he said. "Spider-Man is the only other character that could generate the kind of money Superman could. 'Da Vinci Code' will be in the top five, but Superman has this base of younger fans that 'Da Vinci' can't tap into."

That sounds like the most well-reasoned analysis yet.

He does have a nice title, his view sounds similar to others Ive read only with SR replacing POTC2 in the winners cricle, wel'll know soon enough

Check this out about the DaVinci Code.

http://www.filmstew.com/Content/Article.asp?ContentID=14090&Pg=1

"...As the film screened this evening in Cannes for journalists packed into the Debussy Theater, the feeling moved quickly from one of great anticipation to one of, shockingly, great boredom. Ron Howard knows how to ratchet up the tension in a movie; witness Apollo 13 and Backdraft. But here, instead of the film building to a white knuckle conclusion, it was the audience fidgeting as Da Vinci passed the two-hour mark and unveiled the first of its half-dozen endings. So much so that by the time the big climactic moment of the film finally arrived, the audience burst out laughing, as if this were yet another classic bit of Tom Hanks comedy. As the credits rolled, not a single bit of applause was heard.

Afterwards, as critics from around the world poured out of the Debussy, they were swarmed by two dozen camera crews looking, finally, for the first whiff of reaction to the long-awaited adaptation of Dan Brown's mega-bestseller. Used to being on the other side of the camera, these members of the Fifth Estate could only shake their heads in astonishment, complaining about how many times Hanks and Tautou seemed to conveniently avoid capture by French police. Or, how a majority of the two-and-a-half-hour film seemed to be about endless historical exposition, most of which was presented so fast that in the end it seemed to confuse rather than enlighten the audience..."

Lol @ Posiedon being odds on to flop, thats a no brainer, I thik it will flop HARD. If The DaVinci Code does not do big numbers then the whole marketing team needs to be fired, over here in England just about every other show on every other channel is DaVinci Code related.

As for SR, I expect it to make some nice change but, Box office destroyer...........nah, the same goes for POTC 2, but I do think it will beat out SR.

I imagine DaVinci will do good if for no other reason the controversy around it.

Serious question...could the high gas prices affect the Summer Box Office?

If you are being serious....anything is a possibility. Especially in rurual areas where you have to drive 20 to 30 miles to get a theater.

Yep...it's about 40 miles round trip to the theater for me (and that's if I don't go out of my way for anything)....I won't be going as many times to see things as I have in the past.
