It sucks, because even though a good portion of L.A. is a rich place, there's a ton of people here who simply can't afford these outrageous gas prices.....Anyway, summer should be fun over here.![]()
Biggest Flop: "Superman Returns"
Brandon Routh will prove to be Kryptonite to the Superman francise. A wimpy, bland cupcake can't fill the Man of Steel's tights.
I disagree. Pirates will be huge. The first movie hit it off with teens and young adults. I live on a college campus, and this is the only movie people are talking about right now.bgshw44 said:I dont think Pirates will be nearly as big as it was before. Only X2 I can recall made more then the origional. Now that there is competition w/Superman, and people know what to expect, I would say low $200 mill. If Superman cant make close to $300 mill, there is something extremely wrong

Superman Takes On Mona Lisa
This summer at the box office looks like a showdown between a superhero in blue tights and Tom Hanks with crazy hair with some mutants, pirates and Tom Cruise tossed in for a little flavor.
With hugely anticipated hits such as "The Da Vinci Code" (May 19) and a new Superman movie (June 30), the 2006 summer movie season is looking to sweep away memories of one of the flattest warm-weather box office showings in a decade last year.
"Things are looking much better than 2005, with momentum moving into this summer," said Paul Degarabedian, president of Box Office Exhibitor Relations. "This time last year we were heading into what really ended up being quite a slump it was the worst summer in many, many years."
And while "Superman Returns" and "Da Vinci" may be the biggest names, there are several other dogs in the fight to be the No. 1 summer blockbuster, like this Friday's "Mission: Impossible III," "X-Men: The Last Stand" (May 26) and "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" (July 7).
........
However, Degarabedian said "Superman Returns" will fly away with the No. 1 summer movie title.
"Superman is such a well-known character and Warner Bros. did such a great job of bringing the Batman character back already," he said. "Spider-Man is the only other character that could generate the kind of money Superman could. 'Da Vinci Code' will be in the top five, but Superman has this base of younger fans that 'Da Vinci' can't tap into."

"...As the film screened this evening in Cannes for journalists packed into the Debussy Theater, the feeling moved quickly from one of great anticipation to one of, shockingly, great boredom. Ron Howard knows how to ratchet up the tension in a movie; witness Apollo 13 and Backdraft. But here, instead of the film building to a white knuckle conclusion, it was the audience fidgeting as Da Vinci passed the two-hour mark and unveiled the first of its half-dozen endings. So much so that by the time the big climactic moment of the film finally arrived, the audience burst out laughing, as if this were yet another classic bit of Tom Hanks comedy. As the credits rolled, not a single bit of applause was heard.
Afterwards, as critics from around the world poured out of the Debussy, they were swarmed by two dozen camera crews looking, finally, for the first whiff of reaction to the long-awaited adaptation of Dan Brown's mega-bestseller. Used to being on the other side of the camera, these members of the Fifth Estate could only shake their heads in astonishment, complaining about how many times Hanks and Tautou seemed to conveniently avoid capture by French police. Or, how a majority of the two-and-a-half-hour film seemed to be about endless historical exposition, most of which was presented so fast that in the end it seemed to confuse rather than enlighten the audience..."

Without doubts, it will make more than $300m domesticly and more than $450m in overseas
TheScarecrow said:$750 mill worldwide?
You know I was about to say how ridiculous that was but then I looked it up and the original was earned $653 million worldwide. If POTC2 is actually good, then I agree, it will easily make $750 mill.
I don't think SR will out gross it now.

theJust said:da vinci code and pirates will obviously make the most, cause of built in audience. the advertisements are everywhere, they are taken care of.
x3 will still have its same audience or less, sadly becauise its not so familiar comic book characters, and somehow only fans and the average younger crowd are attracted to it.
now the big question here(at least for this thread) what will superman do?
sure hes a well known character.... but to the general public do they have any idea that this movie is coming out?
despite all the fx movies these past years, is a single guy with super strength who flys in tights appealing anymore?
i personally dont think so.
and whose fault is it, if it tanks? the Wb and bryan singer.
one simple poster for almost a year. one teaser for the longest time.
and now two trailers at the last second and a new poster...
and a record budget...
sorry folks, this isnt going to make it in my eyes.
