Well....Shawn Levy is Directing the Flash

Are you referring to Singer's final product or the years of development hell?

Both. I know they spent what...at least 10 million in the years of development hell and Singer was given a very bloated budget and he spent a ton of dough on scenes that didn't even make it into the movie. What a poor execution of money management WB had for Superman.

I agree but can you blame WB for having full confidence in Singer with the track record that he had? I don't blame them for Singer, but now because of Singer's "misfire", any new director brought in by WB to direct a comic book movie will most likely be paying the price(with the amount of sudio control that will now be involved).

No I can't FULLY blame them but I do know they were giving him the freedom that Ratner was getting denied. The pretty much spent that development time saying no to Ratner then proceeding to say yes to everything. I think they just got so confused and sick of trying to figure out a Superman movie they just pushed it all onto Singer basically thinking it would be an easy cash-in.

Oh God, I can see it now. In a few weeks, Ben Stiller will be cast as the Flash and the main villian is going to be a very camped-up all CG version of Gorilla Grodd.

And the fans start overreacting. Tell me...what exactly did you want?

You want a serious Flash movie...but then half of you think Ryan freaking Reynolds was "born to play The Flash". Does Ryan Reynolds strike you as a "serious" actor?

Make up your minds, people. It's THE FLASH, not THE SHADOW. Comedy is ok, and in fact, should probably be expected in any version of the character onscreen. That's all he WAS in JUSTICE LEAGUE, and people loved him as I recall.

Go watch Smokin' Aces and tell me Ryan Reynolds isn't a serious actor.

Absolutely, I'm sure once they hired Singer they figured they were set in every way possible. I thought the same way too. Once I heard Singer was attached, I thought it was gonna be an easy homerun. As far as Ratner goes, he doesn't deserve the same amount of leverage Singer gets, not even close. But while Singer deserves more leverage, he should have still been checked by someone with some brains in that studio. Didn't Nolan and Goyer have to submit their script and have it approved before they started filming? Or I think they voluntarily submitted it to someone there, I'm not sure. I just remembered reading Nolan and Goyer went through certain checks early on. I wonder if Singer was required to do the same.

People are not complaining really about the fact that he is a comedy director but a BAD one. The only reason I see for his hiring is the studios desire for big box office numbers.

While, I think this is an interesting turn of events. Levy really isn't known for dramas, just mostly comedies. I can't say I was disappointed when Goyer left, because I think his version of The Flash would been much more darker than I'd like for that character. The Flash I remember is a fun, laid-back character and not as broody like Batman or majestic like Superman. (I haven't read any Flash comics, but I did see the '90s show and Justice League.)

Like others said, I'm holding my breath until I hear what the story is about (or who is writing the new script). Besides, The Flash is the sort of character that's right up Levy's alley... who knows, maybe Levy is a fan of the character and jumped at the chance to do the movie. (Hey, if I was offered the chance to direct a Green Lantern movie, I would do it.)

And I did like Cheaper by the Dozen, even though it was manipulative and cheesy. But Just Married was pretty bad, though. Maybe this is the movie that shows Levy's range as a director...

Hey, we've got a studio plant here! :cmad:

Warner Brothers, the biggest franchise company in Hollywood who spend an average of $100M on blockbuster films, have hired a director who's last year BO takings for his film was over $300M (instead of the more creative unproven-at-big-budgets GOYER who hasn't earned anywhere near as much) to do a big-budget action film for the family, so that it makes money? Isn't that the bloody point of a film studio? To make money?

I'm waiting for a script review. The guy said "not a straight comedy, just lighter than Batman Begins" and Batman Begins was pretty effing dark. While I may not like his resumé, I'll wait it out. The Flash is the one that cracks jokes and is not so broody like Batman. He's very similar to Spider-Man in that respect, so if this guy can pull a Raimi with his vision of the Flash, then I'll be happy.

That said, I hope he does the rogues gallery justice :o

Copyright theft anyone? unless Goyer agrees for them to use his ideas.

Well, since the WB hired Goyer to pen, direct and produce The Flash, they had rights to the script. And when he left the project, the studio owns the script. Which means the new screenwriter brought on board (whoever he/she may be) can use it as a basis for their draft.

Oh and Flexo, I'm not a studio plant. I'm being more optismistic for this movie than most of you are -- maybe this negative backlash will encourage Levy to do his best on the movie and appease most of the complaints.

Everyone has to start somewhere.

I don't know. I have some respect for Goyer, but let's be real, much of his talent is due to the directors he's worked with. Alex Proyas, Stephen Norrington, Guillermo Del Toro, these are guy who can take any "middle-of-the-road" script and make an imaginative, enganging film. They're also great visual storytellers. Goyer doesn't really have that going for him, not based on the films he's directed. Zig-Zag was an okay drama that didn't really require a lot of visual flair, but when the time came to direct Blade Trinity, you could tell he had no real idea what he was doing. People worry about Levy infusing the Flash with too much comedy, Goyer went out of his way to put as many comedic actors as he could in Blade Trinity. Two of which are Christopher Guest regulars!! And for the most part, the comedy is flat and out of place. Reynolds' one-liners got tiresome, but he was at least tolerable. John Michael Higgins DID NOT need to be in this movie!

I'll see what Goyer's done with The Invisible. as that seems to have a pretty edgy tone to it. I'll have to check out the remake if I can.

Oh my god people like you are acting like I am saying the studio should aim to lose money. I say make all the money you want BUT ALSO MAKE IT A GREAT MOVIE. Is that so hard a goal?? Or has it become that people continue and continue make these **** movies number one at the box office? Yeah that is it **** everyone who wants a fantastic quality film and just make a pile of **** that is marketed out the ass and gets the family audience.

I don't mind them going lighter with the script. I've always thought of a Flash movie being light anyways (like Spider-Man and Fantastic Four). I just don't really like the new director though. They could've done a lot better, imo...but maybe Levy will suprise us?

There was no guarantee that Goyer would have delivered that. We can talk about Batman Begins until the cows come home, but if we're talking about films Goyer had complete creative control over, like Blade Trinity, we're not talking about all that great of a track record.

And yeah, sad as it is to say, WB needs to make some green on their next big-budget superhero film. Whatever spin they try to put on it, Superman Returns was a disappointment. A LOT of money went into this film, with little return. Catwoman's sting still lingers three years after the fact. There were films that couldn't get made because of its failure.

I'm not saying this is good news by any stretch of the imagination, but I will hold my breath and hope this pans out.

I'm just hoping that we can get something as positive rolling. I'm going to use Iron Man as a somewhat close comparision.

Jon Favreau - Elf >>> Zathura >>> Iron Man

But looking at Iron Man, it's shaping up to be a good-looking movie, IMO.

I know but Goyer has had experience, loves the character, and was actually going toward a tone that would have been awesome for me. And now we got...the director of Cheaper by the Dozen. :o But yeah it looks like this movie is just going to be a cash-in movie.

I can see WB's point of view, they poured loads of money into SR and got little in return, they then in the same year poured loads of money into the Blood Diamond and got little in return, them wanting something that will appeal on a broad level with a director who has made hits is not unexpected

Ok, i officially gave up!
What´s the point?
To give the movie to a man that makes light comedies?
Just because NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM made $220million so far?
This is what the world needed, another Tim Story
