once again...regardless of some people not liking Transformers (a handful) it's clear that this movie wouldn't have happened if Transformers wasn't successful at the box office. i'm not talking about if TF sucked or if it was good...one thing is definite, it turned over a major profit. it's most likely the case that, after seeing how much TF earned at the box office, Fox looked at their own properties and thought "hmmmm, what properties can we exploit in a similar fashion? hey! DBZ has a similar fan base and it's a cartoon also! let's fast track that into the theater and earn a bunch of money! hire the next available director, get a script together and get that puppy into theaters, pronto!"
my case here isn't that TF was a good movie....my case is that the Dragon Ball movie is being rushed because Fox thinks they can duplicate TF's box office success w/out TF's talent pool. regardless of the negative opinions about the TF movie...Spielberg, Bay, and LaBeouf are all much more talented and successful than James Wong and Justin Chatwin.
Nope, what probably happened is that FOX noticed they had been sitting on a gold mine for 5 or so years, and that because of the possibility of a strike, they should make it as soon as possible. I'm sure the person who brought up the idea of making Dragonball into a movie showed them the revenue Transformers made, but I highly doubt they are copying it. If so, they should aim higher than that POS.
I also find it incredibly insulting that you mentioned Spielberg and LaBouf in the same sentence like their equals. These guys are not comparable in terms of talent. LaBouf runs around acting like a *****e, while Spielberg is a legend. His latest movies maybe not, but still he has my respect.
Also, they could have hired James Wong for his Sci-Fi background (and usually producers have a say in who is directing -- Stephen Chow etc.) They did the right thing with hiring Stephen Chow, the right thing with the visuals team, hopefully the right thing with the music (please), and the actors have been decent. Better than the random celebrity cameos in Transformers (Bernie Mac, wtf.) I prefer unknowns (and the fact Chatwin is Canadian is kind of cool to me).
At any rate, these movies will be incredibly different. And, they have already shown us that. Dragonball is a
martial arts comedy with adventure (while Transformers was more of a stupid rock and sock em' robot show) with characters that are SUPPOSED to be over the top (says James Wong). Transformers humans were just products of a badly written sitcom.
Anyway, it's impossible for this movie to be worse than Transformers because it's impossible for Transformers to have a better story than Dragonball. Even with ALL the butchering they are doing, it's still Dragonball. They can add or remove some characters, but the story is still basically the same: Lord Piccolo escapes from prison after being set there for 2000 years, he wants revenge on earth so he tries to conquer it by collecting 7 dragonballs that can grant immortality. Goku, Bulma, Yamcha, and Master Roshi must collect the 7 dragonballs before he does, and before the world is conquered. Master Roshi tries to put a curse on Piccolo but fails, so it's up to Goku to kill Piccolo. Along the way, adventure, humor, and even a world tournament take place... and a hot Asian girl can shape shift.
