What can DC/WB do now to move forward? Is there hope? - Part 1

I brought up Jordan Peele in a previous thread. Maybe WB should meet with him to direct The Flash or Cyborg... he's the first black director with a $100M+ grossing film out the gate.

And if he's good as diverting or changing horror cliches in Get Out, can you imagine him freshening up a comic book film in the same way? Maybe he would be good for Dark Universe...

He's already stated he's not interested in comic book movies. Was before, but he's at a different stage in his life and wants to tackle socio-political issues instead.

Good for him. Not every up-and-coming director needs to take on a CBM to step up.

There are many who love Snyder for good reason

There are many more who don't like Snyder and for a good reason.

I just find the people who dislike him have the need to talk about him, where as the people who think he's "average" is quite a lot, and the people who like his work like him a lot.

Just for some reason the haters always seem the need to talk about him.

All his movies have aged pretty well.

For all my problems with the DCEU, I'm still kinda interested in the Ben Affleck Batman movie. Maybe it'll be released in 2019, in time for Batman's 80th anniversary.

Don't flatter him. He's spoken of so often because he's in charge of the genre's most popular and well known characters and is almost singlehandedly responsible for splitting the fan base right in half.

Even if I liked Snyder I wouldn't want him back for JL2. Three films is enough unless you are truly cream of the crop in terms of one of the best filmmakers in the genre's history - something even which Even Snyder supporters can't even say with an honest face. Let's move on and get more people aboard on these films!

I can say JL2 would be his final film for the DCEU, unless he wanted to do lesser known characters, I'm excited for Matt Reeves for "The Batman"

but I mean, originally I was excited for the previous Green Lantern because of Martin Campbell, and I felt he butchered it.

I mean, Joss Whedon showed promise in the first avengers, but again, I feel he failed in the second.

I'd actually like to see J.J. Abrams, take a stab at the "Flash", his star trek's were solid, and his star wars was good too, I don't want too see him take on Green Lantern as I think his strength will be stepping out of space.

As for another justice league director - Colin Trevorrow i could see having a good stab who seems to balance out a large ensemble pretty well.

THR 3/24/2017:
Warner Bros.' Kevin Tsujihara Among Hard-to-Get Candidates for Sony Studio Job
Kim Masters said:
As Viacom appears to be wrapping up a deal with former Fox studio chairman Jim Gianopulos to run Paramount Pictures, industry insiders are turning their attention to Sony Pictures, the other troubled studio currently in search of new leadership.

Speculation over who will replace outgoing Sony CEO Michael Lynton has involved a couple of major names that may prove to be ungettable. Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that Sony had its eye on Warner Bros. CEO Kevin Tsujihara, 52, for the top job, but complications in extricating him from his present position have caused him to fade, for now at least, from Sony's shortlist. Another candidate, Tom Staggs, is seen as unlikely to be lured by the Sony job but remains of interest. Former Fox Networks Group chairman Tony Vinciquerra has also been mentioned as a possible candidate. Sony declined to comment on the search. FX chief John Landgraf was also approached about the job, according to sources, but passed.

It is easy to see why Tsujihara’s background running a diversified film, television and digital studio would be appealing to Sony's Japanese owners. In addition, Tsujihara's experience in home video and gaming would seem like a major positive for Sony, which hopes to create original content for PlayStation, one of the top gaming consoles and an entertainment hub. And Tsujihara, the industry’s first Asian-American studio chief, is of Japanese descent, which might hold some appeal for Sony executives in Tokyo.

Meanwhile, there has been longstanding speculation in the industry that when and if AT&T completes its purchase of Time Warner, the new owner would make changes at Warners. Tsujihara might feel that moving to the top job at Sony Pictures is preferable to waiting to see what unfolds. Warners did not respond to a request for comment.

Tsujihara became Warners' chairman and CEO in 2013 after a tortured bake-off process that saw his chief rivals, top television executive Bruce Rosenblum and film studio chief Jeff Robinov, leave the company. The studio has had mixed success in the years since. The D.C. Comics universe has been a top priority, and while films featuring the characters have pulled in respectable grosses, they have failed to please many fans or to match the consistent success of Disney’s Marvel. (Even Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, with the two most iconic characters in the history of comics, topped out at $873 million. In contrast Disney got Captain America: Civil War — to take a recent example — to $1.15 billion.)

Tsujihara was credited with courting J.K. Rowling for a series of Harry Potter spinoff movies; the first installment, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, grossed $812 million and restarted the dormant franchise. He also has been negotiating with theater owners to allow premium, in-home viewing of movies.

I dunno why they love talking about color palette of his movies.

None is complaining about John Wick's dark colors but Snyder gets all the crap for it

I think if it was a straight up Batman movie no one would mind. But the inclusion of Wonder Woman, Superman, Flash, etc in a movie with a darker palette is causing more criticism.

Expand the DCEU universe by that I mean make it more diverse with heroes such as:

Green Arrow
Shazam
Booster Gold & The Blue Beetle
Hawkgirl
Martian Manhunter

But then also have sequels for

Batman solo
Superman solo
Wonder Woman sequel depending on how well it does
Aquaman sequel depending on how well it does
Flash sequel depending on how well it does

WW, Aquaman, Flash will have 2 or 3 movies each.

Superman and batman have many more storylines to choose from....but its up to Affleck's condition to make more solos.

So on top of all these.

Nightwing
Man of Steel 2
Harley Quinn
The Batman
Booster Gold
Black Adam
Shazam
Cyborg
Green Lantern Corps
Justice League 2
Justice League Dark
Lobo
Deadshot
Suicide Squad 2
Gotham City Sirens
Flash

Throwing on Aquaman, WW and Flash sequels, you'll have almost 20 movies that they'll be doing after 2018?

^ at 2 a year which is more than they've turned out since MOS that's the next decade plus.

Regarding Snyder...

Even if I liked the guy, I wouldn't want his hand in everything, like it apparently is. His movies have a particular tone that I don't think suits every DC hero. Maybe it suits Batman. But Superman, Aquaman, the Flash... these are heroes who are at their best when they're bright and hopeful and uplifting. Look how much better Wonder Woman looks than Justice League, because Patty Jenkins apparently doesn't have a problem using natural light or adding color into her film when she can. In contrast, look at Momoa's Aquaman costume in the JL trailer. It's difficult to even discern if it's mostly green, orange, gold or something else.

I hope JL is the end of the road for Snyder, regardless of what that could mean.

I think he'll get offered / be given the JL sequel and that will be that. In between, we'll get different directors set up for the whatever comes behind those known slated films.

If JL does well (and I don't just mean financially, but critically) then I won't have a problem with Snyder coming back to do JL2. But if it's another sub-30% on RT, he's got to go.

What does well critically mean? 75% RT?

For WB/DC, anything above 60% would be a win, lol. But I'm thinking 80% or above. They need to make up some ground in my book. I'll be honest here; at this point I'm not even sure I'll see JL in a theater. That could change as more trailers are released and if word-of-mouth is positive. But after getting burned twice last year, I'm not digging this cinematic universe and I don't think I'm alone in that. And it sucks because these are my favorite comic book characters and they deserve better than what they've gotten so far.

I want Snyder to be done after JL. If he has to stay, I hope he's only allowed to play with characters I don't care about. :o
