For Christ's sake there are how many people famous atheists that you could be quoting. Go find some stuff from Richard Dawkins or something if you're really in the mood for debating people, don't use very dubious imprecise statement that are really against dogma and religious establishment.

Because all of them were critical of the religious establishment. (Oh yes, and your ideas of what a "religion" are would make Atheism one, too) Religion, in most people's eyes, is an embodied establishment.. there is no established Church of Deism nor does being deist make you by any stretch "religious". It merely means you think that if there is an entity up there, it's not a "personal God". It's not a big man in the clouds, and has absolutely no interest in us if it's even to the level of caring about the shifts it caused.

Also, to claim that all of those Fathers being Deists means nothing shows how little you appreciate their sway. Jefferson WROTE the Declaration of Independence. Madison's ideas strongly influenced, more than anyone else, the Constitution of the US. He also was responsible for creating the Bill of Rights. These few people influenced largely the direction of this country, and that's why they're considered the Founding Fathers, and the fact that they signed the Declaration. Yes, others did sign the Declaration and played a small role in it's construction, but it was far and wide these men. That's why it's stupid to downplay their significance.

The point stands that they were irreligious. Deism still not being a religious establishment and all. The "great thinkers" of our time that ANTHONY was trying to say were religious were all of those men. They were the great thinkers of their time, far more than anyone else, and they still were not religious.

Everyone has to make their own personal peace with the universe, and whatever way that they do that is perfectly fine because it's their way. Of course, people say that more than one spiritual philosophy leads to war and suffering. But honestly, the problem isn't religion but people who are unwilling to just accept the fact that not everyone thinks like them and just let it be.
