What is the worst kind of nerd?

the worst thing was they were harassing his daughter on her Twitter because of the prequels.

You gotta be kidding! That's insanity. Those people need to get a life. I can understand a nerd being upset. Nothing upsets my fangirl more than Superman Returns, but there's a line that should never be crossed.

Personally,I can't stand the anti-prequel Star Wars fans.

It's one thing to not like the prequel/Special editions.Even hate them. But I'm talking about the "Lucas should never get his unclean hands anywhere near the films again!!!:cmad:" division.

I mean,I don't like every choice/change he made,but at the end of the day,they're his *&#$% films.:whatever:

Lucas changed.

He's not exactly the same exact person who made the OT.

But I don't hate Lucas. He gave a ridiculous amount of money to charity and finally sold Star Wars instead of taking episode 7-9 to the grave with him.

Elitist nerds are the worst.

It's like they bottle up all the rage from being bullied by alpha males and rejected by women and take it out on "lesser" nerds.

Kind of like the Uncle Toms of nerds.

It also seems like Indy 4 is blamed on him because he made the prequels. :whatever:

How can people still be mad about the Prequels…it's like 8 years later…time to let some things go.

I think what happened with SW nerds is by the time of the prequels there was an entire universe that had sustained the fandom. The Zahn novels are what got me back into SW, and I know it was that way with other folks. Then the prequels happened and it was like everyone's childhood dreams and hopes were dashed in one fell swoop. When stuff like that happens people need someone to blame because they are just crushed on the inside.

One of the most anticipated cultural events in nerd history and we got hours of Jar Jar Binks...

That was our Pearl Harbor... Never forget. :csad:

yet no one brings up the Christmas Special or the Ewok movies which are worst in my opinion.

Haha...because the Christmas Special and Ewok movie came out when most of those folks who complain about the prequels the hardest were still kids. At that time, they were more easily entertained. Or...they have never seen them.

One question I have is do you need "nerds" to create a cultural event? Meaning, are crazy fans necessary for the longevity of characters, franchises, etc? If that is the case, then we should all be thanking "nerds" because then there would be no such thing as SHH...a place for nerds to gather.

Well you need both casual fans and obsessive fanboys for a cultural event.

If you have just casual fans the event will lack the celebratory customs that make it seem like a big deal (ex. nerds camping out before The Phantom Menace).

If you just have obsessive fanboys you never strike a cord with the masses leaving the event in obscurity.

I think time played a big role in the prequel shennanigans. People had years to get "their version" ingrained.

Hmmm...but don't you need obsessive fans to create casual fans? If not what is the distinction between a casual fan who likes the character long term and an obsessive nerdy fan?

I'll use Avengers as an example.

Casual fans pretty much enjoyed the movie and look forward to the sequels and spin off. They don't go further than that.

Obsessive fans will gain encyclopedic knowledge and surround themselves in Avenger related merchandise and media.

I'm not sure these two have any direct relationship since they are more likely to mock each other than inspire each other.

Personally I found that the worst kind of nerd is the obsessive compulsive one in any fandom. The ones flipping out because of a tiny change to canon that messes with the fanfics they wrote and the love triangles they planned out. The ones who take to the 'net just screaming that no one else is a fan, the creators are wrong, the authors are idiots and the other fans aren't fans because they either don't obsess about it or they just have fun and enjoy it for what it is.

Personally for the Star Wars prequels though, my biggest annoyance was that they had been banned from talking about the clone wars until the prequels came out and only were able to give tiny hints about it. Usually meaning something like clones of senators or emperors or even Jedi masters were running around causing havoc and that they were going to have some sort of massive battles between multiple clones of yoda, obi-wan and whoever else was around. Then we got the prequels and got robots vs clones. meh.

Beyond that I'm fine with whatever they do but I've known people who just lose it if anyone talks about the prequels.

But as for the Prequels, there has been some good things come off it, like the Darths and Droids webcomic. Anyone read it? It's hilarious.

Probably the ones that get on my nerves the most, are the book/comic book purists who like to bash movies or fans that are more open minded. I'm not sure what they would fall under.

Under a similar cover would be the ones, when there is a remake or say, a cover of a famous song, they ***** and moan how awful the new movie or song is, even though they don't realize that it's actually helping their beloved movie/song get exposure to a new generation.

Nolanites. I have never met one in real life (went to see MOS earlier this year, and when some college kid came walking in with a Captain America shirt, I was so ready for that kid to get the crap beaten out of him) but, I am sensing they tend to be just an internet sensation. When out in the real world, I guess they become wusses.

Sports enthusiasts who think a fandom around anything else (comics, movies, whatever) is "stupid" or "childish" or, and sadly this word is thrown around far too much, "gay."

How can some people still be happy about the PT? Some do need to let things go. :oldrazz:

But seriously...RLM does make valid points and very overlaying ones that a lot of us feel. Sometimes I wonder if some automatically hate RLM because PT fans' just don't like that because they are good points, I'm sure not all but some seem to. His attitude and other things can be "stupid" at times, but his over all points just said what many of us said quietly on forums for years just more so ignored, and he put it on the bull horn. Once you cut the fat from his reviews, the core points do stand very well for a whole group of people and how we feel.

I hear the same arguments from PT fan's all the time too.

Since we got on this note I can't stand the elitist of anyone OT or PT. Like over at TFN it's filled with the people that think they are more intelligent then everyone else because they like the "density" of the PT and others "just don't get it". The thing is too many PT defenders act like they re victims when I've seen just as many of them become as nasty. Claiming others are not real SW fans, or I've been called.."Intellectually inferior" Because I don't get the genius that was the PT.

The fact of the matter is there are just people out there that want to spit as hard as they can on others. One way or another. But sadly they trump over those of us that are trying to make points on a more civil level.

Now I agree the PT haters that go to the extreme do terrible things...are terrible people. And there are those on the PT side, go to TFN and you will see some nasty things. Already saw a few of them banned because of that.

Most of us "PT dislikers" are not these nasty people that spit at George, we just simply did not like them, lots of us fans did not.

I always enjoyed hearing from guys who are obsessive about fantasy football and things like that talk trash about video games and D&D and try to explain how it was different.

Explains a lot. Seen many the nerd turn their phones on to text a friend, and I just throw one handful of ice at them, and they quickly put the phone away and shrink into their seat for the rest of the movie.

Im not saying you have to like them but at what time do they stop causing people uncontrollable rage. I'm not a fan of the PT, believe it or not, but I don't think everything about them are bad. I still identify as a Star Wars fan.

I don't think RLM makes valid points. I think he tries to apply a lot of rules to movie making when there are none. I don't like the fact that people can't get into a discussion of what they didn't like about the PT without RLM being brought up. Did anyone walk out of TPM complaining about the movie not having a protagonist? Believe it or not there have been quite a few movies with no protagonist. I think it's a case of people not liking the movies and when someone nitpicks it people agree with it because they disliked the movie. There is a document online that someone made that debunks the RLM review. I got to find it.

This last line made me spill my white chocolate mocha....lol, but I see your point.

I guess I just think of SW. I don't think it would have become the cultural event it has become if not for obsessive fans demanding the merchandise, memorabilia, etc. These fans are determined to keep their obsession relevant so they can get more of it, which in turn creates more casual fans interested to see what the fuss is about....IMO.

Sports enthusiasts who think a fandom around anything else (comics, movies, whatever) is "stupid" or "childish" or, and sadly this word is thrown around far too much, "gay."

I agree.

Sports is actually real.

But the obsession of the fan who is not playing the sport is the same.
