The Dark Knight What the sides and filming point to as plot/JOKER

right but again- trailer footage is film footage. this scene will be in the final film most likely. i doubt they are shooting an origin seperate from the film entirely and i don't get why his hair would be normally colored. even if it's the "mask reveal shot over joker's shoulder" we'd expect to see his hair color from behind.

This is all speculation based on limited context. I was only stating that there is no doubt that they're shooting in there. Nobody sets up that much equipment and brings a full crew down for *just* an actor rehearsal. Even if they wanted the dolly rehearsed there would be no need for the volume of equipment that is set up. I'm saying that they're filming, the nature of what they're filming I don't know, but they're filming.

well we agree on that, but the nature of this thread is to speculate about the "what."

Yeah I know. I was just trying to set straight the idea that this is solely a rehearsal. There's no way they aren't shooting, that's all. I agree that this will be in the film, but I'm most curious about the why as to why Ledger looks the way he looks.

I for one would like to see a little background on the Joker, even if it is the tiniest flashback. Remember Mask of the Phantasm? You briefly get to see the human Joker, and it is both chilling and cool. He doesn't speak a line. You just know that he is a brutal hitman for the mob, and someone to be feared. I loved Nepenthes' treatment! It could be very effective if they just made tiny allusions, or a few brief flashes from the past; however, only toward the END of the film. the human side can't be one of your earlier experiences. You have to be well acquainted with chaotic, monstrous Joker before you even have the slightest evidence that the dude was once what we call "human". that way, it's just that much more scary. Plus, that type of subtle thing wouldn't overpower anything important in the film, given the chaotic goodness we already know of in the script. not much could overpower THAT. Plus, we have to remember the one bone that Nolan threw us: much of TDK was inspired by the first two Joker comics, and Fiveway revenge, all dealing with...well, payback. and payback usually means that even some verbal background may be a neccessity. or not. i could go either way! Explanation or not, we are all going to go to the theatres and indoubtably soil ourselves :)

I have a question to those who have seen the clown masks in person, do they cover the back of the head? Are they full masks that you pull over your head, or are they the kind that just cover the front and are held on with a string or something?

Check the front page for pics, their are pics of them. It seems that they only cover the front.

I think the reason why Ledger had brown hair and a black clothes was because the Joker is disguising himself as one of his own henchman.

It would be pretty obvious if you saw green hair coming out from behind the mask. It looks like we're getting a Joker that has a knack for disguises if you ask me. I reckon the Joker is wearing a wig in this scene, which is why the bank teller didn't recognise him as a "freak".

Hmm, the news post describes a picture of 4-6 of them on a smoke break, but the only picture that seems to come close to showing them is the one with 2 or 3 walking into the building from behind, followed by some guy with a yellow backpack? Are there more pictures, or is that it?

Man, i'd love to get a good look at those things, as well as Mr. J himself. Damnit WB!! Give us an official picture, so the fans can stop worrying about carved smiles or black hair and grey skin. COME ON!!!

I for one just dont believe the picture was of the Joker or Heath. DarkB you asked how they could show and origin story since they showed his calling card at the end of BB? Simple actualy, they said this new movie continues where Begins left off, so what happend in Begins? They didnt say he was Joker yet, just mentioned he leaves a calling card and has a sense for the theatrics. That doesn't mean he was Joker already at that stage, just a murderer/thief.

Yes, the crazy theatrical killer who leaves a Joker calling card just HAPPENS to have an accident that leaves him looking like a clown. Coincidence like that is stupid and lame. It's why I'm glad they retconned Riddler to having legally changed his name to E. Nigma (he was born Eddie Nashton). It'd be nice to get rid of Freeze's real name being Fries as well.

Hasn't it been rumoured that the mob punishes him by disfiguring him?

I wouldn't even go so far as to call it a rumor. It was just straight up speculation by a board member here. A theory, nothing more.

Yeah you know, in this stage theories quickly become rumours and rumours turn into ''facts''.

the only clues that point to a buried mobster origin for the Joker is one casting side (where a 'detective' interrogates a thug about a 'missing mobster' that was buried) and a leaked scriptment review that could likely be BS. apart from that I say there'll be an origin of some sort because to me it seems like storytelling commonsense.

WAIT!

Fichtner's playing a bank manager...

Filming's going on in chicago...

The filming's about Gotham National Bank...

The only confirmed casting is the Joker's gang and Fichtner, just as the Chicago shoot begins...

One of the sides talks about the following:-

INT. BANK - DAY

The MASK-WEARING THUG stuffs cash into his bag as the wounded BANK MANAGER watches him.

BANK MANAGER
You have any idea who you're stealing from? You and your friends are dead.

The thug isn't bothered

BANK MANAGER (CONT'D)
You idiot. What makes you think the guy who hired you isn't going to kill you, too?

The Thug STOPS. Crouches over him. In the distance: SIRENS.

GENTLE VOICE
Call it a hunch.

The man PULLS off his MASK. The Bank Manager GASPS, horrified at the face staring back at him.

GENTLE VOICE (CONT'D)
It's rude to stare.

The bank manager summons his nerve, gritting his teeth.

BANK MANAGER
What are you? You freak. Criminals in this town used to believe in things. Honor. Respect. What do you believe in, huh? What do you bel-

BANG...the THUG puts a bullet into the MANAGER's head.

It all fits Fichtner's role (he'll only need to be on set for 1-2 days), AND confirms both the side and what is being shot RIGHT NOW!!!

it doesn't have to be a coinsidence- it could be an intentional dunking in acid of joker by his henchmen to get back at the j man for either stealing their money or them wanting his share. anyway- they would dunk the VAIN theatrical robber in acid to MAKE him look like a clown. then he survives and seeks revenge, embracing his new horrifying look with lipstick and the clothes to match
