What's The Last Movie You Watched? - - - - Part 21

PA isn't about jump scares. Like most found footage it's about slow build-up, tension and dread. Doesn't work for everyone though.

I was looking for that, too. It was sooo slow to build up, though. And after all that, most of the creepy bits were really telegraphed ahead of time. The only time I thought "Oh ****" was when the girl is asleep on the couch and the shadow starts moving.

And the dog thing. But I always hate it when stuff happens to dogs/animals in movies.

In Bruges. If Seven Psycopaths is a 10, In Bruges is a 9. It was great either way!

Phil Spector. Al Pacino didn't disappoint here one damn bit seriously such a great role. I wonder now though, anybody remember Michael Mcdonald's character from MadTv the one that was like a far, rich Hollywood producer always wearing a jogging outfit? Can't help but think he was based off of Spector after seeing this I know that much at least. Still though, Pacino ****ing killed it as always

Oz the Great and Powerful - 3.5

I had a fun time watching this film. Had some striking visuals, hilarious moments and great make-up work. Joey King and Zach Braff were the highlight performances for me, I simply adored both characters.
Of course the story was kind of cut & paste (Army of Darkness anyone?) and Oz wasn't the most likable protagonist. Still, an entertaining outing.

Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971)

Ah, I see they've lightened up the tone.... HOLY **** WHAT THE ****!?!?!!??!!?

This very much feels like the natural route to take the franchise, putting Zira and Cornelius in the shoes of Taylor. It's a bit dorky in it's Star Trek 4ness, but I appreciate the sincerity.

The villain, Dr. Hasslein looks exactly like my old boss, who was probably also a baby murdering ****.

Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972)

I liked this one quite a bit. I like that despite Zira and Cornelius' warnings, humans A: still made slaves of the apes and B: even without nuclear war they nearly got their asses nearly extinct anyway. Humans can be that stupid in reality too.

I was really surprised J. Lee Thompson's name in the opening credits, and it shows. In spite of a low budget (There's like two locations in the entire film), there's a level of panache that's been missing since the first. Especially the action scenes, which he's always been good with.

On an objective level, I'd have to call this the best of the sequels, but the bat**** insanity of Beneath still makes it my favourite.

Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1973)

It was interesting to go back to the post apocalyptic style of the first and touch on the bomb cult again. But by this point the series had totally ran out of steam. I suppose the film makers knew this too and probably made it to give the series a happy ending.

5/10

Shutter Island

Pure cinematic bliss for me. Unlike Inception, this gets better with each viewing and it gets better thinking about it. This, The Social Network, and Toy Story 3 are in the elite for 2010 for me.

I' am glad I' am not the only one who loves Shutter Island.

Greystoke - The Legend of Tarzan [1984]

I disagree. I thought Inception got better with each viewing for me. I wasn't a big fan of Shutter Island though either.

Killing Them Softly. 10/10. Without a doubt one of my favorite movies of 2012

Hard for me to say if I liked Inception more or not, but yes, Shutter Island was great!

Inland Empire

Been meaning to watch this for some years now, but 'cause of the reviews and length of the film I've felt a bit reluctant. Well, Laura Dern was great of course, but this would take at least one more viewing to really try to grasp.

Just let me say, it's more Lynch in here than in any other Lynch flick.. :D

The Avengers - 10/10

Just as fun watching it to this day as it was opening night. :D
