Happy Death Day

Had a blast watching this. It's a horror film with comedy elements that is essentially Groundhogs Day meets a slasher film. They do a great job making the movie clever and charming at the same time. Jessica Rothe pulls a breakout performance in this and helped elevate the movie. They do a good job keeping you guessing who's the killer and even when they give you the reveal they find a way to pull the rug under you. The only part I had a problem with the movie is the ending and how they try to have its cake and eat it too in a sense. It's not a big deal, but it keep me from giving this a perfect rating. Overall, if you want a good clever horror film you must check it out.

Salt with Angelina Jolie

Usual story of being falsely accused, escaping and going on the run. Best thing about the film is that it doesn't drag. But not enough meat on the bones to add up to anything expect a few action sequences.

Colossal. Very, very good. Went to places I was not at all expecting. 4/4 stars.

The Foreigner

I wasn't expecting much from this movie considering how many movies we get that look like this, but are never actually good. I gotta say I was surprised how good this was. This feels like the type of movie that came out in the early to mid 90s where plot, acting, and set pieces are engaging, serious, and fun. Jackie Chan and Pierce Brosnan probably gave some of their best performances in this and it was great whenever they were on screen. While this may look like Jackie Chan's Taken, it's really more of a political thriller that also happens to be Taken or even The Punisher. My only complaint about this movie is there's not enough Jackie Chan when it gets to the 2nd and 3rd act. While I enjoyed the whole Pierce Brosnan/IRA plotline, they should have given Jackie more to do. Overall, it's a great political/revenge movie that is better than most out there.

Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter

It's been a while since i've seen this one. It's got all the hallmarks of what you'd expect in a Friday the 13th movie which is probably why it's highly regarded.

Jason Takes Manhattan.

I enjoy it because of lulz, but it's definitely the worst of the Paramount 8. Too long to get to New York, tame gore, low nudity, a lot of bad acting (though not as bad as 3's acting), and the climax/Jason demise is pretty laughable. But Kane still works well, Jensen is really pretty, I like the Julius character, Rennie/Jensen's uncle is so bad he's hilarious and I loved watching him get his, and the Times Square scene is pretty great. My grade: C (probably generous for most, but works for me)
