Village of the Damned

It's one of Carpenter's better mid range films (and sadly his last good film before he went batsh** insane with Escape from LA), but it's still decent. I haven't seen the original, but I thought this was pretty entertaining. I thought Christopher Reeve was great here with his last performance before his paralysis and it was surprising to see Mark Hamill show up. Also I forgot how good Kirstie Alley used to be before she got lost in reality tv. Overall, it's good, but not great.

Better Watch Out

What a weird yet interesting movie. I didn't see the trailers for this so I was expecting a typical slasher, but turns out it's more of a dark comedy/horror. This is like if they took Home Alone and made it as horror film. They do some interesting stuff with the plot however it causes almost everyone in here to be unlikable... some more than others. That being said, I had fun with it.

The film turned 25 years old this week so I decided to revisit.

One thing I do like is the eeriness, and looking at it again with fresh eyes, it came across as more of a gothic-horror-romance story instead of a straight-up slasher as I had remembered it to be.

The Mountain Between Us

It's a romantic survival film that is pretty straightforward. Only thing that lifts this from being a generic Hallmark channel tv movie are the two leads and the gorgeous locations. Kate Winslet and Idris Elba were great in it and their chemistry works way better than it should. It's a pretty quiet and serene movie which is not what the trailers made it out to be. It's pretty predictable where it's headed but I enjoyed it for the most part.

Flatliners (2017)

I gotta say... it's not as bad as the critics are say, but man this was a boring mess. This feels like it was made over 10 years ago and it finally got released to the public. It's both trying to be science fiction and horror but neither side works at all. The acting is generic and telegraphed and most of the characters had some bad motivations. Nina Dobrev and Ellen Page were probably the only ones who had any depth to their characters. This movie just felt like it was going through the motions and didn't do anything interesting or new.

Yeah I thought it was pretty decent... I like to think of it as the gritty low budget Black Panther movie from the 70s.
