Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

Can not stress enough how this isn't what you think it is. And I couldn't be happier for such a surprise.

From the moment Sheriff Willoughby (a superb Woody Harrelson who I hope is not lost in the shuffle come Oscar nominations) matter-of-factly asks, "You know I have terminal cancer, right?" you are taken aback. It comes out of nowhere. Nothing to even slightly suggest that is where this story is headed. That exchange expresses how, as in real life, things are not black and white. They are grey. A lesser-film would take sides. Mildred (Frances McDormand in a career-best performance, and that's saying something) is right in her actions, everyone else is wrong and to Hell with all of them. Yes, I felt her anger, her pain. To lose a child is unspeakable – a wound that will never heal. Yet I, myself, instantly wondered, "Wait, you knew he's dying and you're still doing this?!"

I didn't know how to feel. That's the point.

Multiple times during the film, it manages to subvert one's own expectations of where this is headed. You think you know where it's going and how you will view these characters from there on out and it masterfully manages to flip it. One scene (another sit-down between Mildred and Willoughby) comes to mind. They are at each others throats. Face to face, yelling. This is going to get ugly. Suddenly he coughs up blood in her face(!?!) They both freeze. His face drops, his eyes full of tear, "I… I didn't mean to" and she comforts him, softly reassures with "I know" and goes for help.These are two people who seconds ago hated each other. In that single moment, you understand they are people too. They have compassion and decency.

And that's just one sequence. Turns like that happen several times. But I am going to stop myself now. This is a story to experience for yourself and preferably a room full of people. To dissect and discuss the turn of events does a disservice to writer/director Martin McDonagh and his cast, excellent performances from top to bottom. Until you have seen it.

As with Wind River (my favorite film this year), this felt like a good book. A story that unravels before you. When it reaches its closing moments, you are left with questions, with feelings, with emotions. Not sure how to feel. Once again, that's the point.
The Strange Thing About the Johnsons

Jesus. CHRIST! Most disturbing 30 minutes I've seen - up there with Hard Candy and Threads as films impossible to shake. Afraid to even ask the thought behind this. Though I can not deny how effective it is.

Sorority Pillow Fight (2011) stars Michelle Rodriguez.

It's only 3 minutes long - it finishes pretty differently to how it starts! :up:

Kong: Skull Island (2017)

This may be my favorite Kong movie since the RKO original despite its flaws and honestly I think I prefer it to most other modern kaiju films. Still I think it falls victim to the trappings of modern action movies. I also felt some of the humor didn't work and probably should have been cut. The two-legged design of the skull lizards didn't really make sense to me anatomically. It felt like a mistake not to use dinosaurs like in the original. I did like the nod to Ray Harryhausen's giant octopus in It Came from Beneath the Sea. The story itself is mostly entertaining and the casting is pretty good. It's also fast paced and the CGI monster scenes are action packed. The after the credits scene gave me hope for the upcoming Godzilla sequel.

Atomic Blonde

I didn’t feel this was all that. Theron looked great and I liked the stairway fight especially but overall it felt like Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy souped up with a dash of gender swapped Jason Bourne/James Bond (right down to Sofia Boutella being the disposable conquest).

Kingsman: The Golden Circle - 5/10

Didn't care much for this sequel really. It felt so out of date with it's jokes and the whole Poppy Adams character/drugs thing was just odd and boring.

Roman J. Israel, Esq.

It was okay for what it was. The movie is pretty much a character study that doesn't fully use its potential. However, the performances weren't lacking. Denzel, Collin Farrel, and Carmen Ejogo were great, but the material didn't give them enough to do. It becomes basically a simple morality story and you see every move coming. It's disappointing because it's a step backwards for the director who directed Nightcrawler. In the world of Better Call Saul, this ultimately feels very procedural. Overall, it's just an okay movie.

American Assassin

It's a espionage thriller that starts out interesting enough, but quickly turns south and what you end up with is a gritty take on those GI Joe cartoons. Any chance of nuance goes out the window once Michael Keaton takes Dylan O'Brien on to those missions. There's nothing noteworthy on performances outside of Keaton. There was a moment in the movie where I totally expected him to say those famous line "You wanna get nuts?!" I thought the only saving grace for this movie was the action and the gore which surprisingly I did not expect to go that far. Overall, it's a movie that gets dumber by the minute and by the end I couldn't wait until it was over.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

It is a sad and unfortunate fact that all one has to do is turn on the news and see a parent(s) crying out for justice for a murdered child,no matter what the child's age,the loss is still felt deeply.
Sometimes through some type of protest,march or posting of reward money a parent may hope to get some kind of answers to who,when,where and why.
In Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Mildred (Frances McDormand) pays for 3 big billboards that point to the town's police chief Willoughby (Woody Harrelson) and his fellow officers and their inability after 7 months to find the murderer of her daughter.

My goodness this is one of the most unpredictable films i have seen in awhile!
Scenes crackle with humor,salty dialogue,sadness regret,love and heartbreak.
Sometimes you get all of the aforementioned at one time and it works.
McDormand is absolutely terrific.She portrays Mildred's frustration,anger and love to a perfect T.
The rest of the cast is also on point which includes: Sam Rockwell, Woody Harrelson, Abbie Cornish, Lucas Hedges, Caleb Landry Jones, and Peter Dinklage
I really think half of the cast will receive Oscar nominations.Terrific writing and Direction from Martin McDonagh
I loved that even though the characters are literally at each other's throats,care is still present,the pain they suffer is understood and relatable.
The honesty and true to life feel that wraps itself around this film was so overwhelmingly moving.

What a great,soul stirring ,seamless film.

One of the best of 2017

Murder on the Orient Express

I purposely didnt watch the 1974 version of Murder on the Orient Express partially because i wanted to be surprised and i didnt want to sit through the movie compairing the two films.
Based on Agatha Christie novel Murder on the Orient Express the film has a great opening as we are introduced to detective, Hercule Poirot(Kenneth Branagh) and the other characters that eventually become suspects in the murder
The twisty plot plays out in a slow way with moments here and there of excitement.It's beautifully shot and it was fun to watch the beyond observant Poirot put things together that may add up to the answers he seeks.
Branagh's camera work and direction are sharp
The rest of the cast including : Olivia Colman, Daisy Ridley, Leslie Odom Jr., Josh Gad, Willem Dafoe, Penelope Cruz, Johnny Depp, Derek Jacobi, Judi Dench, and Marwan Kenzari do well,with some over acting and mugging here and there.
The film reaches a point in which it starts going down a bland path with some predictability mixed in ,i started to lose interest and there was still at least 20 more minutes to go.
This would definitely make a nice rental but not something you must see in the theatre.
My interest is ignited in seeing the aforementioned 1974 film and the ITV Poirot series with David Suchet as Poirot.

THE PUNISHER (1989)
QUALITY = 6/10
JOY = 9/10

A shoddy script, some goofy looking apparently cheap action choreography, but I enjoy it, plus it has some of the most memorable lines in a CBM to my account.

THE PUNISHER (2004)
QUALITY = 7.5/10
JOY = 10/10

I know this movie isn't known as a genre great, or even good, but I personally love it. Sure it has some issues that stop it from being a great film, but not enough to make it really less than decent, which is what it is. My personal joy in it is almost unhindered, I have minor nitpicks here and there, the nitpicks are not big enough to make the joy I have toward this movie broken in anyway.

I think I'll watch Daredevil: Director's Cut again before sitting through Punisher Warzone, mainly cause I'll be watching season 2 of Daredevil before sitting through season 1 of The Punisher.

Why do I do this? I just feel like doing it, I don'ty need to have a logical reason to be in the mood to watch a movie or a TV show, all I know is I like what I watched and most of what I will watch. I'll definitely enjoy the Punisher season 1.
