It Came from Outer Space (1953)

I rewatched this as it aired on TCM recently an enjoyed it. Honestly I feel that it's one of the best campy monster movies ever made. The production value is high for the time, the mood and score are eerie throughout and it's full of inventive shots and interesting visuals. Richard Carlson gives a solid performance as an astronomer who witnesses a meteor crash land in the desert which turns out to be an alien spacecraft. Things get complicated when the bug-eyed aliens start impersonating and abducting people in an attempt to repair their ship. I really like the reaction shots of the victims from the aliens perspective. The ending where Carlson's character confronts his own alien doppelganger then blows up the entrance to a mine in order to stop a posse from attacking the aliens is pretty climactic. I would really like to read the Ray Bradbury story this is based on.

Finally watched Get Out. Damn what a fantastic film, 9/10.

Atomic Blonde
8.5/10

I really liked this. Charlize Theron kicked ass and takes a beating just as much. Took me a while to get into the story, but once it kicked in I was hooked. Sofia Boutella is gorgeous but I was hoping to see her kick more ass. James McAvoy was despicably seedy and very interesting to watch. The fight scenes are incredibly well done and had me tensing up a few times throughout. I wasn't spoiled beforehand with the ending, and I haven't read the book that it's based on, so I was genuinely surprised.

The Lego Ninjago Movie

Just like with the previous LEGO movies, this one is just as funny and clever. While i'm not familiar with the Ninjago world, I can easily pick up that this is movie is pretty much Power Rangers with LEGOs. It also basically plays around the tropes of Kaijus and super power teams. Justin Theroux, Dave Franco, and Jackie Chan did a pretty good job voicing the characters (and Jackie showing up in live action). Story wise is as you expect. Although, I notice a trend that every LEGO movie so far has a father/son hangup. If I have any complaints it would be that this after the first hour mark, starts slowing down which made the movie feel longer. Overall, it's a pretty funny animated movie that gets that Robot Chicken style humor just right for a wide audience.

The Killing of a Sacred Deer

It's by Yorgos Lanthimos who directed The Lobster which had a very cold and peculiar directing style, so this one was no different. There's a lot of Kubrick style moments with the cinematography and the storytelling. Just like with the Lobster, you feel like a fly on the wall and observing a group of people who feel alien, yet are trying to act human. Where I felt The Lobster dragged on after the first hour, this had the opposite effect. You get a mystery for the first hour which was a bit of a chore to get through. Then once the mystery fades away, it turns into pretty much a horror movie. I can't say it worked completely because it's hard to get past the very cold performances. But the movie somehow keeps you on your feet because you don't know where it could go. Overall, it's not for everyone but if you're into something different you should check it out.
7.5/10

Star Wars: The Last Jedi
8.5/10

Incredible job by Rian Johnson. Adam Driver steals the show with a brilliant performance and Mark Hamill isn't far behind. Some glorious visuals and amazing action and it probably now includes my favourite space battle in a Star Wars movie. There's a lot of treats in there too. My only major gripe was John Williams' new score, and the lack of any real memorable theme, but perhaps a second viewing will change that.
