I enjoyed it a lot. It starts off as a pretty decent utopian scifi movie, they do a good job on exploring the various things that would happen if Downsizing actually existed in our world. You follow along Matt Damon and Kristen Wiig as they look into Downsizing and when Wiig gets cold feet and leaves him, then you get into the meat of the movie. It shifts gears almost completely when Hong Chau shows up and meets Matt Damon. It's interesting to see the trailers and marketing for this movie because they actually don't show you the darker message of what the movie is really about. While the movie has ultimately a environmental message, they do it in a way you don't expect it to go. Overall, it's surprisingly well made and it's got a couple of really good performances. And it's pretty funny on top of that. 9/10
It's yet another bland comedy that doesn't do anything new or clever. It also an excuse to make a travel log out of the movie by showing off various different cities. As they meander throughout the movie finding potential dads, there's a part of the movie where it completely stops and sits there for about 20-30 minutes. Overall, it's a movie that is nothing but a bunch of old cliche hijinks that got old 15 years ago. 4/10
Considering the bad reviews and that fact that Max Landis wrote this, I went in wanting to hate it. And shockingly enough, I actually dug this a lot. It's pretty much if you combined Alien Nation and End of Watch with magic and sorcery. The first hour of this was particularly done really well. It's a shame it's not a Netflix tv series. While the subtext about race and class struggles is not subtle, I thought it worked. If it weren't for Joel Edgerton, I don't think they could've pulled this movie off. He and Will Smith were able to take this material and elevate it. They both have great chemistry and it sucks whenever the movie pulls away from that. Where I dug almost everything dealing with the orcs, I thought most of the elves were kinda lackluster outside of Noomi Rapace. The main plot could have used some work too. Overall though, it's an enjoyable fantasy film by David Ayer and I guess lightning can strike twice for Max Landis. 8/10
