The Dark Knight Rises Which Batman GN or TPB will you be reading before the movie comes out?

Actually they didn't base the Joker in the man who laughs comics, they based his appearance on the film on his first appearance in Batman #1 from the golden age, the same source used by The Man who laughs comic, it's even evident when the Joker falls from a building and is caught by Batman in both, Batman 1 and The Dark Knight

Yes but isn't the man who laughs pretty much a retelling of Batman #1. It's all the same to me.

There is story elements from The Man Who Laughs in TDK, like the mention of Joker having no identity from his fingerprints etc after they've captured him for the first time. Joker hires psychos from Arkham to work for him in it, just like in TDK. There's also a city evacuation because of Joker's threats.

Batman Begins - the man who falls (bruces origin), year one (gordon, flass, young batman)

The Dark Knight - the man who laughs (joker's story), The long halloween (dent's story, the mob)

The Dark knight rises - Knightfall (bane's story) no man's land (decrepit winter gotham under siege) Dark Knight Returns (older bruce near the apparent end of his career)

It's funny because what we've seen and heard about TDKR so far happens to mix three of my favourite batman stories of all time.

Dark Victory played a significant role for Bruce's "origin" in begins - even the part where he's visited by a future foe during the Waynes Funeral. And yeah I agree, most of those books are very present in the stories. It's one of the reasons why I have to admit that David S. Goyer did a fantastic job in keeping things faithful to the comics. I believe The Killing Joke had a lot of elements in Joker's interpretation - especially the bit where his "past" has multiple versions. Nolan apparently gave Ledger a copy of that and Arkham Asylum, but ol' Heath felt it was too one-dimensional for his interpretation.

No one ever blamed him.

Both goes actually, I'm sure they patched in many elements altogether. The wintry Gotham reminds me of the nuclear winter at the end of DK:R though.

That's some of things I really liked about that comic. All the characters were so fleshed out.

One thing I don't remember is: how can Barbara have all eyes on Gotham? Are there security cameras planted everywhere or something? This applies to all the comics that involve her as Oracle.

NML will always be my favourite Batman story-arc, it was really, really intense. As for Oracle -- if memory preserves -- she had her own field-agents during NML to keep an eye out and one of them was Cassandra Cain. Oracle, in addition to that, has/had nigh limitless access/hacking equipment supplied by Wayne Tech.

On a side note, that makes Lucius somewhat of an Oracle stand-in for Nolan's world dunnit?

Yeah, Lucius definitely reminds me of Oracle, especially when he was supplying information to Batman in the end through that sonar machine.

I went through Knightfall and Legacy and other Bane-related titles after he was announced. Also went through Catwoman: When in Rome.

Just re-reading general Bat stuff a lot; just finished Officer Down and starting War Games.

Gonna wait till closer to release and go through some of the Brubaker Catwoman, NML, and of course, TDKR.

It occurred to me how the Two-Face murders can basically be a stand-in for the Holiday crimes from The Long Halloween, an adapted, Nolanized, version of it anyway - down to Batman being a believable suspect to the rest of Gotham City.

I think the last batman comic I read was The Killing Joke... when it came out.

The only thing I can respond to that is ... i know mainstream comics is nearly vacuous when it comes to really engaging literature but really there are really, really good stuff you should check out.

Yeah, you should read it, The Man who Laughs is also one of my favourite stories, if you have time i would also recomend you to read the Joker's first appearance from Batman #1 that is collected in Batman Chronicles vol.1 with a good price along with other Golden Age Batman comics that were in fact the 1st year of Batman comics

Knightfall all the way...I read Year One, The Killing Joke, TLH, and Dark Victory(though it may be inconsequential to these films) before the other ones. And maybe TDKR just for ****s and gigs 'cause of the 8 year plot device.

Anyone else think they could have gone a more DV route if they didn't kill Dent? I would have liked to see what Eckhart could really do.

I think there are still a lot from it that TDKR can draw from, especially from the relationship between Gordon and Bats in there. Or Bruce/Selina. Not too sure about a returning Eckhart though, the best Two-Face story was The Long Halloween, and seeing Bruce and Jim grieving the "loss" of their friend makes a lot more sense if he's yknow... actually dead. Just my thoughts.
