Who do you want to see as Captain Marvel?

My pick would be Strahovski, Winnick, and Chastain. In that order.

Heh... All this talk about male vs. female casting reminds me.... Have you looked at some of the Benny CumberBotulism reactions in the casting threads for Doctor Strange? Those are the closest I've seen to people saying a male actor isn't hot enough for a particular role.

Cumberbatch isn't a very cool looking dude, and if a superhero isn't going to be hot, they should at least look fairly cool (or weird, in some cases) in costume. Michael Keaton looked cool in the Batman suit, Andrew Garfield looks cool in the Spider-Man suit. Iron Man has a shiny metal tech suit, and the complaints about IM3 not using the suit enough can be partly explained by this. RDJ is fine during snarky or dramatic character moments, but during action the suit is more bada** than Robert Downey, Jr. with repulsors on his feet/hands. When there isn't a mask involved, you get Henry Cavill, Chris Hemsworth...Captain America does have a mask, but he didn't wear it for a lot of The Winter Soldier and it didn't matter because Chris Evans is a cool looking dude.

Danvers wears a pretty small mask and a "swimsuit" in her traditional Miss Marvel outfit, and in the Captain Marvel suit we're likely to get a variation of, she has no mask at all, so the actress's appearance definitely comes into play. Personally, I don't find Emily Blunt to have the screen presence that PelvicSorcery says is so necessary to the experience. That right there explains my not wanting to see her lead a film I'm interested in. At least a significant part of that, though, is that her features are bland to me. She's someone who could blend into a crowd easily, not someone good at standing out. So while I don't strictly need an actress I have the hots for (although I would rarely criticize such a thing, and it would help the movie compete against all the others coming out for my attention), I do look for actresses that are striking in some way.

If you think blunt is a plain actress, that's your opinion and I can't change that despite her being commanding in the edge of tomorrow, devil wears prada and looper amongst others.

But just casting actresses you have the hots for is the best way to ensure an elektra or cat woman level flop. We've all learned from that

But no one says oh this person couldn't play the role because they're not hot enough. Plus when they draw male physique they tend to make them powerful not like they are smuggling pillows down their shirt

I've seen several reactions to Cumberbatch's casting as Strange that are just that.

Male heroes in comics are absolutely drawn "smuggling pillows", it's just a different type of pillow. It's more like everyone is 6' 2"+ and built like Prime Schwarzenegger.

I agree it's very different in casting threads for women than it is for men. In male casting threads people cast academy award winning actors. For the female characters they post supermodel pictures

That's just so "selective-memory", not true at all as evidenced by this very thread. The main suggestions for Carol have been top quality actresses, and I guess you missed all the "Triple H for Thor", "Old Spice Guy for Black Panther" talk.

Blunt is easily, perhaps minus Chastain, the best actress up there, IMO.

I think Pike is on par with Blunt, but yeah, Winslet and Theron are probably on the tier above them just in terms of what they've done so far. All of them are great, though.

What has Natalie Dormer done to her hair? I think she has a weird mouth. I don't want her as Carol.

She got that haircut for her role in Hunger Games: Mockingjay. I agree in not wanting her for Carol, though. Not because of a "weird mouth" or anything, I just don't think she has the right kind of presence/persona for it.

I'm totally on Team Blunt but I'm surprised at not a single mention of Diane Kruger in this thread or on the poll. She's got chops and was good in Inglorious Basterds.

Marvel should cast younger actresses. Blunt is way too old.

I think Amber Heard looks the part. Not too old either.

Alexandra Daddario?

Maggie Grace?

Those two are only 3 years younger than Blunt. And since when is 31 way too old?
Grace is the same age as Blunt.

*sigh* Here's where I again mention that Carol is a highly-ranked officer in the U.S. Air Force and even if she rose through the ranks impossibly fast, she still wouldn't be in her twenties. Or even early 30's, really.

For me, a big part, even if it never happens, is that for a live action Carol, you have to believe that in an emergency situation, SHE could take over the team in a heartbeat. Good choices, bad choices, you should believe that sans Stark or Steve, this crew would follow Carol's orders without question. To have that kind of credibility as a character, I don't think you can have the actress be too youthful in appearance.

I've always wanted Kruger for Black Canary/Sue Storm. But,yeah,I could still see her as Carol.

Blunt is 31.

On what planet is that too old?

She's only three years older than Daddario (who would be an awful choice imo) and only one year older than Grace.

I don't know if Blunt should be Carol or not but she's at that magic age. I think early to mid 30s is ideal

that's exactly what happened in the books. She was already a retired captain before we were introduced to her. May not be realistic for real life but her unusual accelerated career at a young age is part of her history

I'm aware that she rose thought the ranks quickly, but in the current comics she's a retired Air Force colonel, so the "young age" for that would be in her 30's considering people are rarely ever even make that rank before 40. A twenty-something colonel in the modern Air Force is essentially impossible, never mind a retired one.

Enchantress :woot:
That's more like it.

LMAO. Maggie Grace? THAT's who you want headlining Marvel's first female driven solo film? For the love of God...

The other suggestions aren't too great either.

And Emily Blunt is too old?! You're insane. She's almost 20 years younger than some of the current Avengers.

"Looks the part" seems to be all you care about.

she didnt have a typical career. She only retired to join NASA and the Air Force bumped her up to colonel when that happened. She didnt actually serve in active duty under that title when she left. Im not even sure what her rank was before the bump, but they made a special case for her which explains her young age. Besides,we have no clue what her rank will be in this film. They may make it a bit more realistic and have her introduced as an early 30s woman who is not a colonel

I like Kruger but she can be a bit hit or miss. I think she likes doing european films more than blockbuster films
