Well, it would be long, and dragged out to extreme excess. Which I guess is technically one of the definitions of epic.

But if you set up Thanos in Guardians and cut out all of the extraneous characters from the comic version of the saga, you can pretty much cover all of the major points in a single Avengers movie. And it would still be big and grand and unique, it would just be centered on the characters instead of the events and it would be more tightly plotted.

A trilogy of Infinity Gauntlet movies? Why would there be a trilogy of Infinity Gauntlet movies?

There shouldn't. I understand what he's saying about it being too big of a story to deal with in one film, but if they build up to it properly over the course of the Avengers and GOTG films, the Infinity Gauntlet film would just be the pay off, not the whole story.

Sort of the Deathly Hallows Part 2 of the MCU.

His Stark is stupid, his Mockingbird asked what a Thanos does, his Gamora is way too proper, when she should be very rough around the edges/ not the girl you bring home to mom. His Thanos is not nearly Nihilistic enough (He writes a Thanos that would never kill Gamora, even though Thanos has killed her on 3 separate occasions, and one that wants to rule the world instead of destroy all reality.)

His only saving grace is his Rocket / Star-Lord dynamic, which gives me a glimmer of hope for his rumored GoTG on-going. Unfortunately we'll have to deal with his Princess Kitana take on Gamora, instead of one that calls other women "toots", and one that destroys alien hotel rooms when you deny her sex.

Basically Bendis doesn't care what the actual personalities of the characters are, he just writes whatever he thinks is cool

I was looking forward to the Guardians relaunch until I heard Bendis would be writing it. Oh well, hopefully he sticks with X-Men and drops Guardians in a few months

The funny thing is way back when Bendis first hit it big at marvel with Ultimate Spidey and Daredevil there were a few interviews where he said he didn't think he could write team books as he had trouble juggling so many characters. And then they went and handed him the keys anyway.

I don't think he's as bad as some but I believe his strengths lie elsewhere. He'd be the perfect guy to spearhead Marvel Knights but with the really high profile stuff like Avengers his work suffers.

but all this aside. Joss plans on having the sequel be small and more personal. I just don't see how a Thanos movie can be a smaller more personal story for the avengers. However, Ultron does. And with the push for ant-man, its bound to happen eventually.
Civil war isn't even like an avengers story.

I think it's too early for time travel, and I don't think we need to turn the Avengers or the MCU into the Infinity Gauntlet franchise. It's a great story, but it's not the one ring. Spreading it out like that could be a problem for the longevity of the MCU.

I think a terrestrial villain, either a Masters of Evil culled from the leftovers of the solo films, or an Ultron or something like that would work much better to allow the Avengers a dark second act. Maybe have Thanos come and layeth the smackdown, but not so often that the movie feels incomplete without him being defeated.

Jim Starlin himself stated that Thanos would be in *both* GOTG and Avengers 2.

Ever since Thanos showed his face, many speculated that the cosmic overlord would be involved with the Marvel Cinematic Universe in some sort of capacity. Then came word that Marvel Studios would be taking audiences into space with Guardians of the Galaxy. Marvel moving forward with such an ambition film may have come as a shock to some, but taking into account that Thanos is one of the big baddies crossing the Guardians‘ path in the comics, and some of the trinkets like the Tesseract and the Infinity Gauntlet making an appearance in a previous films, it makes a lot of sense that he would be the villain in Guardians and The Avengers 2.

The people over at Cosmic Book News were at the Montreal Comic-Con where Thanos creator Jim Starlin confirmed that the character would appear in both films. This bit of news comes right after James Gunn announced that he would be directing Guardians of the Galaxy. However Marvel Studios hasn’t backed up Starlin’s statements and refuse to comment on the rumors.

It just says that Thanos will appear in both films. I'd venture to say that he has more focus in GOTG, but certainly not the main antagonist and in Avengers 2 he will be in the background. I'm still thinking Ultron is the antagonist for Avengers 2.

Then I think he will have a more behind the scenes role in Avengers 2. Perhaps he is the one to spurr the actions of the main antagonist(s), but I don't think we are going to see him trading blows with Hulk just yet.

I assume you mean the "smaller and more personal" comment. He clarified that in an interview:

G: It was recently announced that you’ll be directing The Avengers 2, but should we be expecting bigger events, a bigger team and a bigger villain for the next movie?

W: It would seem so. Normally you would think a sequel would be bigger, but I was thinking I’d like to do the opposite and go smaller. When I presented that idea I was asked in return “So you’re going to turn down the volume on the movie?”, but that’s not what I meant at all.

Of course new characters will be added. But having just met this wonderful cast, even I’ve just begun groping for a demonstration of what kind of synergy they have together. I’ve said that it’s important to put in not only necessarily always a large scale, but a lot of love. Movies can be on a grand scale but also more personal. I’ve already touched on that, so I don’t really need to go into it again. The issue is really just how deep can I delve in.

Yes, I was referring to those very comments. Thanos gets you the large scale but maybe not the personal. Ultron achieves both of those objectives, while also not feeling like a repeat of the first Avengers where an otherworldly being attempts to conquer/destroy Earth. I could see Thanos somehow giving Ultron a push in the right direction, thereby making him the background baddie.

Having Thanos "give the villain a push" in two straight Avengers movies is kind of weaksauce. Everything, especially Marvel greenlighting a Guardians of the Galaxy movie (risky!), the first film's tag, and Whedon's love for the character, points to Thanos as the full-on villain for the Avengers sequel. You can only tease something for so long without the audience getting fed up with it

I disagree. Thanos has no real personal connection to any of the Avengers, they don't even know that he exists and even if they did he would be just another villian. Aside from the obvious Pym connection, Ultron could pose some unique questions or challenges for both Stark and Thor.

I don't deny that Thanos will play a huge part in this Phase 2 of the MCU. I see him being the common thread throughout. Perhaps Thanos makes a grand appearance at the end of Avengers 2, after what we believe to be an Avengers victory, only to see that Thanos actually has the upperhand.
