The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Who would be the best MJ?

Idk. I like Woodley, but I was really hoping that the Gadon casting rumors were true. Especially since John Romita Sr. based MJ off of actress Ann Margret.

I think Gadon has that same sultry type of look that would work well with the character.

Oh well :whatever:

Gadon's definitely got the looks to make a great MJ, I just don't know her acting well enough to determine if I think she's got the acting cred to pull off in the role what I think Woodley could. I'd be happy with either one.

I'll trust in Webb.

Gadon has nothing on Ann-Margret, looks or acting-wise. Nothing.

Ah, to have gotten Ann as MJ in a 70s Spidey movie and Caine as Constantine in a 70s Hellblazer movie.

Kendrick would be great for some roles in CBM's...but MJ is definitely NOT one of them.

She's very cute, just kind of petite and skinny to be playing MJ. I could see her playing April O'neill in a TMNT movie though.

I don't believe that any of this is sexist at all. Most of us talking about the features that an actress that plays MJ should have have also commented about other actors and how they were not right for their role.

For example, Topher Grace was a horrible choice for Eddie Brock/Venom. Slightly because of his acting, though mainly because he did not fit the character's look. It was a bad casting choice. Eddie Brock/Venom is supposed to be built bigger, by a lot, than Spiderman and not played by some actor that would have actually been a decent choice to player Peter Parker.

Is it "sexist" to think that Topher Grace was not built enough to play Brock/Venom?

To me, Shaelene would be a decent choice if they go the Ultimate route, but also IMO the ultimate route is a poor choice for MJ. In Ultimate she's more of a girl next door than an out of Peter's league super model with an amazing personality. To many of us that version, the model who is real, is the iconic one.

I think that that is what this is really all about. The Gwen that Webb & Co. have gone with is iconic, and should be. The Spiderman that they have gone with is, for the most part, iconic, and that's a good thing.

And the same needs to happen for MJ.

Sure, they don't have to go with the iconic versions for every character, such as Electro and Rhino, and please not the iconic, over the top JJJ; but main characters that will be with us through numerous movies and will be directly connected to Peter's growth and relationships need to be the iconic version.

I think this is why so many of us didn't like Shaelene as MJ. They didn't give us iconic MJ with Kirstin, and Shaelene wasn't meeting that as well. Hopefully now they will realize what needs to be done and either glam the heck out of Shaelene, or go with another actress who meets the iconic version of MJ.

I totally agree, Super Jim. People don't need to go calling others sexist here just because they want an actor that fits the traditional look of the character. It's like people calling others racist here just because they want a character to stay the same ethnicity they've always been. If you want to call me closed-minded because I want a character to stay the same, sure, that's your opinion...but calling me a racist or sexist is uncalled for.

They even put a sticky up about the "racist" name calling because people were so immature about it. Maybe they need one for "sexist" too since people don't even know the right context to use that word.

Kirsten Dunst doesn't get the credit she deserves... For Spider-Man (2002)... In one scene... The rain scene... Her chest...

Has anybody mentioned Jane Levy? I haven't really seen anything she's been in so I have no idea of her acting skills....but she's definitely got the MJ look going on!

I just looked up some pics of Ann Margret from her younger days.....WOW:wow: Talk about a perfect MJ! I guess it makes sense though, being that the comic character was based on her lol.

Here's Jane Levy on Craig Ferguson....great MJ potential! They'd probably have to do some movie magic to make her look taller though. But yeah I'm totally digging her look and personality.

Just took a look at Jane Levy and at first glance I thought it was Emma Stone.

Although Jane is very beutiful, I think we need someone different enough from our Gwen. Yes, the hair color would be different, but if the facial features, height, etc. are too similar it might come off weird.

I think we need an almost 6 foot, curvy actress that has been a model, which would help in the portrayal of the character. Maybe something like this...

The thing is, if award nominations was really the critera for MJ Sarah Gadon actually has one award nomination and one award win, both Canadian awards. If they'd have cast her in the first place, we and they wouldnt be in this situation.

The other thing is, while people are trying to say that MJ in the Sam Raimi movies was the iconic 616 MJ, she was a piss-poor take on the character, which everyone agrees with. In part because of the script and partly due to her own personal problems. I think we need another decent shot at the character which respects her iconography a bit more.

I haven't seen anyone on the internet who would be against Sarah being MJ and believe me that is a rare thing to have unanimous agreement on something on the internet.

You have a point there, I guess we do need an MJ that's more model-like and less short & spunky to differentiate from Gwen. Too bad they didn't pick a different Gwen though and cast Emma Stone as MJ...she'd be awesome!

To me, Gadon looks a tad too "french & snooty" (for lack of a better term). Maybe it's because of her long neck? But yeah I wouldn't say she's a bad choice for MJ, I'd be ok with her. Just that I personally think there are better options. Just little picky things lol.

Yeah I don't get what's sexist about it either. Sexism is a prejudice or discrimination based on a person's sex.....I don't see where that's happening at all here.

I think maybe some people are confusing the term "sexist" with talking about a woman's physical features. The thing is, nobody complains if we talk about a male actor having the right build, musculature, etc. to play a character. But start talking about a female actor being curvy or skinny and whether she has the right look and some people seem to think it's a crime.

Ironically, the double standard of it being ok to scrutinize guys' physical features but not girls is what could actually be considered sexist.

I don't believe that any of this is sexist at all. Most of us talking about the features that an actress that plays MJ should have have also commented about other actors and how they were not right for their role.

I made some long posts about this as well but you guys perfectly nailed it! I couldn't have said it better myself!

This overuse of "sexist" is as much of a problem as said "racist" thing. I hope mods will see that as well. It's getting ridiculous that you can complain for all you want about a man's look but as soon as it comes to one woman who has a very specific look that's actually a part of her character, people are suddenly sexist. Ugh!

That overuse of the term is actually a disservice to things that actually ARE sexist in this world.

When Shaelene was dropped and Jane Levy's name was being thrown around, I made this comparison...

I think she'd be a great MJ from Ultimate Comics, can understand if people don't want them to go that route with the character though. In fact, count me in with the camp who thinks Emma would have been the perfect MJ, even though I really love her as Gwen.

Nice comparison SpideySenses...

...and yeah, Jane would make a fantastic MJ. Not just Ultimate, but any incarnation.

She's extremely talented, very charismatic and has that very important likeable factor, that any actress will desperately need to bring Mary Jane to life. Not to mention she's drop dead gorgeous and extremely sexy and has every attribute in regards to acting talent, personality and looks, to bring this great character to life.

As I mentioned in the other thread, she's easily my favorite as well. :hrt:

Not to say there aren't plenty of fine other actresses, that could/would also be great and make wonderful MJ's as well, but just in regards to personnel preference (and to answer this threads question), Jane's definitely my girl.

Lol. That's a little harsh. While I agree that Ann-Margret is THE BEST MJ and an unparalleled actress, I think that Gadon is certainly capable of portraying a character based off of her. She gives that classic beauty/sexpot vibe and she's a good actress, but I guess to each his own.

Jane Levy is great for MJ, but so is Emma Stone. As many people have stated, they are just too much alike. Whoever is cast as MJ needs to contrast with Emma Stone's Gwen Stacy in both looks and personality, while still being just as likeable. It's a tall order, but I'm confident Webb can do it.

Haha that looks almost like an exact copy!

But I don't agree with people who want her as MJ. First of all, I don't think she has that "MJ" look (and I only Count 616 because that's the only version I want). Secondly, and this ties into the first point, I think she looks way too young and small. Put her next to Garfield and it would look weird.

Why do people keep wanting Jane Levy she looks like Emma's copy.

I really like her, but that is a pretty good point, that she's too similar to Gwen. There does need to be some differentiation, like other people have said.

If we had a different Gwen, Jane Levy and Emma Stone would definitely be among my top choices for MJ....I like the spunkiness and personality of both of them. But yeah, since we have Emma Stone for Gwen, it's probably best that MJ is taller and have more of a "super model" look to her rather than just "super cute".....if that makes sense lol

Lyndsy Fonseca!

Somebody had to have mentioned here before, but I don't think I've seen her in this thread. She's tall, she's hot, and she has decent acting ability (from what I remember from Kick-Ass anyway). Definitely worth consideration!

Let's not see a damsel in distress with MJ in every single movie...

^ I could jump onboard the Lyndsy bandwagin very easily.
Lyndsy-Fonseca.jpg

Still feel Alexis Knapp is a slightly better choice, but just barely.

But honestly, either one would do it for me!
